  • 23、"I never knew before, Cecil, that you were so fond of drawing," said Aunt Sophia, as she looked over the shoulder of her nephew, who was busy with his pencil. "You really have made great progress."

"I need to do so," cried Cecil, "if I am to carry off the prize for drawing, as I am determined to do this term."

"I should have thought," said the aunt, "that you had little chance against Lee. He is an artist's son, and has used the pencil from his cradle.(摇篮) "

"That will double the pleasure of beating him!" cried Cecil, "I'm working now at this four hours a day; he never draws more than two."

"You are not neglecting(忽视) your Latin for it, I hope? You have had the Latin prize every term for these three years past," said Aunt Sophia.

"Yes," replied Cecil, with a proud smile; "there is no boy in our class who can match me in that, though Russell is now working hard. But I am not content with one prize: I cannot rest till I have won the paint-box for drawing, of which Tom Lee makes so sure. It would be glorious to beat the son of an artist on his own ground!"

"Take care," said his aunt, "that you do not lose the Latin prize in trying for what you are not likely to gain.”

On the evening of the day on which the names of the prize-winners were read out, Cecil came home from school long-faced. His looks told his aunt enough to make her spare him the pain of questions; but his little sister Rosey was not so thoughtful.

"Cecil," she cried, "tell me, are you to get the two prizes?"

"No, not even one. I was so busy trying to beat Lee that I could not hold my ground against Russell." Cecil threw himself into a sofa in an angry mood.

1What made Cecil keep practicing drawing?

    A. His interest in drawing.   B. His strong will to win the prize.

    C. Lee’s being the son of an artist.   D. Russell’s working hard on Latin.

  • 24、Reading is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons.

First, reading is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. You will never feel bored or tired.

Next, you can read a book almost anywhere---in a car, on a plane, or even in the bathroom. All you need is a book!

Another good reason for reading is that it is useful. If you read as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. And you will read faster and find it easier to understand what you read. As your reading skills improve, you will probably find your schoolwork becomes much better.

Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You can read on computers, and the better you read, the better your computer skills will be.

Good readers may become writers too. They always have more things to write about.

If you wish to become a good reader, here are four important points to remember about speed of reading:

Knowing why you are reading---what you are reading to find out---will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.

Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.

Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.

In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow or from slow to fast as you go along. You need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

    1You can read a book ________.

    A. almost anywhere B. when you are driving a car

    C. only on a plane D. only when you feel bored or tired

2Which of the following reasons is NOT true that reading is a good hobby?

    A. It is fun. B. You can read almost anywhere.

    C. It is out of date. D. It can help you improve your computer skills.

3According to the passage, your reading speed depends on _______.

    A. how much time you have B. where you do the reading

    C. the writer of the book D. what and why you are reading

4If you want to read for fun and relaxation, you should read _______.
