  • 23、Just then, Senora Ines arrived and asked Rosaura if she wouldn't mind helping serve out the hot dogs, as she knew the house so much better than the others.

“See?” said Rosaura to the girl with a bow, and when no one was looking she kicked her in the shin (胫骨).

Apart from the girl with a bow, all the others were delightful. The one she liked best was Luciana, with her golden birthday crown, and then the boys. Rosaura won the sack race, and nobody managed to catch her when they played tag. When they split into two teams to play charades, all the boys wanted her for their side. Rosaura felt she had never been so happy in her life.

The best came after Luciana blew out the candles. First the cake. Senora Ines had asked her to help pass the cake around, and Rosaura had enjoyed the task very much because everyone called out to her, shouting Me, me!” Rosaura remembered a story in which there was a queen who had the power of life or death over her subjects. She had always loved that, having the power of life or death. To Luciana and the boys she gave the largest piecesand to the girl with a bow she gave a piece so thin one could see through it.

After the cake came the magician. A true magician, he could untie handkerchiefs by blowing on them and make a chain with links that had no openings. He could guess what cards were pulled out from a pack and a monkey was his assistant. He called the monkey "partner".

The final trick was wonderful. One of the children had to hold the monkey in his arms and the magician said he would make the monkey disappear.

Rosaura thought that this was truly the most amusing party in the whole world.

【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.Rosaura was unwilling to give Senora Ines some help.

C.Rosaura looked down upon the girl with a bow.

    A.Friendly.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Cold.

    D.Warm

【3】What does the underlined word "that” refer to in the fourth paragraph?

    A.A story Rosaura remembered.

B.The power of life and death.

C.The task to pass the cake around.

    D.The cake they enjoyed together.

【4】Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.The people at the party were happy except the girl with a bow.

B.Rosaura had a good time when playing games with other children.

C.The magician was able to play many tricks at the party.

D.Rosaura felt amused when the monkey disappeared suddenly.

  • 24、At first glance, it seems that giant pandas (大熊猫) might not be good at hide- and-seek. With their black and white coats, they appear to have a hard time matching their backgrounds and avoiding detection by their enemies. But a new study finds that the unique markings, in fact, provide effective camouflage (伪装) and help them disappear into their surroundings. Scientists have long wondered what function the black-and-white coloring plays.

For their study, researchers analyzed photos of giant pandas in their natural habitats. “We’ve found that the animals are very well camouflaged because they use habitats with dark and lighting conditions, and also snow during some time of the year,” study author Tim Caro of the University of Bristol and the University of California, Davis, tells Treehugger.

They found that the black patches (块) of fur match primarily shade and dark tree trunks. They also match the ground, rocks and leaves. The white fur patches match snow, rocks, and waxy, bright leaves. Sometimes pandas also have patches of pale brown fur and those match rocks, ground and shady background areas.

The researchers also explored a type of environmental camouflage known as disruptive coloration. That’s when highly contrasting patterns or very visible boundaries on an animal break up its body outline. They found that the black and white borders on the panda’s coat make it less noticeable, particularly from farther away.

It might seem a bit confusing because giant pandas are very easy to spot at a zoo, for instance. But the environment and the viewer make a difference.

“We modelled their coloration through enemies’ eyes as well as how humans see them so we are sure of the results.” Caro says.

“It seems that giant pandas appear easily noticeable to us because of short viewing distances and unnatural backgrounds, when we see them, either in photographs or at the zoo,it is almost always from close up, and often against a backdrop that doesn’t reflect their natural habitats,” says author Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol. “From a more realistic enemy’s view, the giant panda is actually rather well camouflaged.”

【1】What is the general first impression of giant pandas?

A.They like staying away from humans.

B.They are really good at hide-and-seek.

C.They match the backgrounds very well.

D.They can be easily detected by enemies

【2】What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Tree trunks.

    B.Pale brown pandas.

    C.Black fur patches.

    D.Shady background areas

【3】What can we learn about giant pandas from Nick Scott-Samuel’s words?

A.They are less noticeable in natural environments.

B.They can be easily noticed even from farther away.

C.They often disappear into backgrounds in a zoo.

D.They can not camouflage from an enemy’s view.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Giant Pandas Hide Themselves From Tourists

B.Giant Pandas Are Actually Good at Camouflaging

    C.The Black-and-white Coloring Proves Appealing

D.You Are More Likely to Spot Giant Pandas in Nature

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、读后续写

The day of my big solo (独唱表演) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and my little brother. It was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. My name was on the cover of the program. “Cindy Hamond … Soloist.” I couldn’t believe it. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee Swanson’s.

Renee and I had been friends since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was always ahead of me. Dance-class recital needs a big finish? Renee was picked. Softball? She played first base. And the school plays? Renee would have the leads. The only time I ever came in ahead of Renee was at roll call (点名). Hamond comes before Swanson. I count that as a victory.

The choir concert tryout was stressful for me. We waited while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins got to the H’s, my heart sped up and my whole body was shaking. When I came back, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.

When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choir group, I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said under my breath, “what else is new?”

Sudden clapping came. Everyone was looking at me. I’ve missed something here, I thought. Ms. Jenkins looked at me, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me. The solos take extra preparation.” Solo? I got the solo? I could hardly believe my ears. I glanced over at Renee. She smiled and gave me the thumbs-up sign.

Now the day had come. we filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jenkins raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. I could see my parents were smiling at me.

The spotlight circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jenkins nodded and pointed her baton at me, but I froze right there on the spot.
