21、Everyone worries about exams, but test anxiety is in another league, causing such fear that it is impossible to do your best. Does your mind go blank in exams? Do you become distracted? Do you score much lower on exams than on homework? Then you may have what psychologists call test anxiety.
Test anxiety involves severe stress before, during or after exams, making it impossible to do your best. It can make your heart feel as if it is racing, and you may submit to (屈从于) “negative self-talk”, convincing yourself you are going to fail or upset. These stressful thoughts, not surprising, can block your brain’s ability to find what is stored in its memory, as well as making it harder to understand the questions and organize your thoughts. Is it possible to stop test anxiety?
Developing good study habits, understanding the exam format (格式) and marking scheme (评分方案) can all help to reduce anxiety. But for a greater effect, other methods are also needed, such as relaxation techniques in which you lie down before the exam, close your eyes and focus on breathing while tensing and relaxing group muscles in turn (legs, arms and stomach).
A study looked at anxious students in maths exams and concluded that writing about how worried you feel before the exam may also reduce anxiety.
Be as prepared as possible before the exam, arrive early, and repeat positive statements such as: “Everyone feels anxious; I know I can do this.” Just as in a race, do not look at what everyone else around you is doing. Focus on the paper in front of you. Do a quick skim to evaluate the feel of the overall test. If you feel nervous, take deep breaths and remember that it is just a test.
【1】Paragraph 2 mainly talks about ________.

22、In 2007,Bianca Valenti had an experience which nearly killed her. When she paddled out at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, she met a wave the length of a garage and as tall as a two-story house.
“The second I went under water, I was just getting knocked and spun every which way. And then my feet touched the sand bottom there. I swam to the surface. At this point my lungs were burning painfully. I just thought to myself, ‘If there’s one more wave after this, I’m going to die.’ Luckily there wasn’t another wave. ”That was when Valenti knew she had the drive and skill to surf big waves.
By 2014, Valenti surfed and won her first big waves contest at Nelscott Reef in Oregon. There, she met fellow professionals Paige Alms, Andrea Moller, and Keala Kennelly. “Two things got me fired up at that point,” she said. “I wanted to have the opportunity to win more events, but there weren’t more events for women. Also I noticed that just the sight of women surfing big waves was opening people’s minds... That’s really annoying.” Luckily, Valenti, Alms, Moller, and Kennelly became a dynamic foursome and decided to stick together, support each other, and then fight together.
The four surfers formed Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing(CEWS) to fight for entrance at Mavericks—a contest set in the surfing location of the same name, north of Half Moon Bay. Mavericks was invitation-only and was open to only men when CEWS was formed. Now, through the organization’s hard work with the State of California, women are awarded12 spots to surf.
When Valenti was young, there weren’t many women represented in surfing culture. “I think it’s important for young kids to have all kinds of role models. That way they know all the people who they see as superheroes are just normal people who have crazy dreams. And sometimes the dreams aren’t even that crazy. If you work hard and you stick together with your friends, you can do anything. You can move mountains.”

Starting a bank a child’s play? Absolutely, if you ask some enterprising youngsters in India, who have not only managed to establish one, but also, unlike many of the large International banks, run it successfully since 2001. What’s even more impressive is that the young bankers and their 90,004---clients(委托人) are all homeless!
The Children’s Development Khazana (treasure) opened its first branch in 2001 at a homeless shelter in New Deli as a way to help the street children protect their hard-earned money from thieves. Since then, the idea has caught on like wildfire.
Today, Khazana has 12 branches all across New Deli, with a total of Rupees 12lakh (about 22,000USD) in deposits. Not only that, there are now 77 branches in other parts of Asia, ranging from Nepal, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to the island of Sri Lanka, and even Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. While no deposit or balance is too small for the bank, they do have strict regulations about where the money is earned from. Funds obtained by begging or selling drugs are not welcomed at this bank !
Also, unlike the real banks, all employees are volunteers , which means that they go to school or a paying job during the day and work at the bank in the evening. To ensure that everybody gets a chance to participate in running the branch, two volunteer managers are elected from the clients base every six months.
Karan, the current manager is just 14-year-old. During the day he earns a living by helping out the cleaning workmates at wedding banquets and other big parties. In the evening, he handles the deposits(存款)and withdrawals(取款)in the bank. After the bank closes, he along with an adult volunteer from the shelter head over to a regular bank and deposit the funds collected into Khazana’s interest-bearing bank account and though it started with one single purpose. The Children’s Development Khazana is today a well-developed bank, one kids can not only deposit money which earns them 5% interest, but also, request loans for family emergencies, to start a business or even to pay for school.

24、 These days, young people in some English-speaking countries are speaking a strange language, especially when communicating on social media.
Look at these words chosen by The Washington Post: “David Bowie dying is totes tradge” and “When Cookie hugged Jamal it made me totes emosh.” Or this sentence: “BAE, let me know if you stay in tonight.”
What on earth do they mean? Well, “totes” is a short form of “totally.” Similarly, “tradge” means “tragic” and “emosh” means “emotional.” It seems that, for millennials (千禧一代), typing in this form is not only quick but trendy.
As you can see, much millennial slang (俚语) is formed by so-called “totesing”—the systematic abbreviation (缩写) of words. The trend might have started with “totally” becoming “totes,” but it has now spread to many other English words.
The origins of other millennial slang are more complex than “totesing.” “Bae,” for example, has been widely used by African-Americans for years. It can be an expression of closeness with one’s romantic partner or, for someone without romantic connection yet. After pop singer Pharrell used the word in his work, “bae” became mainstream.
Some people might think millennial slang lowers the value of the English language, but Melbourne University linguist Rosey Billington doesn’t agree. She says when people are able to use a language in a creative way, they show that they know the language rules well enough to use words differently. Two other linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylor Jones, share the same view. The two analyzed hundreds of examples of totes-speak and discovered totesing has complex roots.
It isn’t simply an adult version of baby talk, nor a clever way to minimize your word count. Rather, it is a highly organized system that relies on a speaker’s mastery of English pronunciation. It is about sounds, follows sound system of English and has strict rules.
【1】Which of the following best explains the underlined part in Paragraph 3?
A.Creative and fresh. B.Flexible and practical.
C.Swift and romantic. D.Time-saving and fashionable.
【2】Why is “Bae” mentioned in Paragraph 5?

B.To explain why it has been widely used.

D.To show some millennial slang has complex origins.

A.It has no specific rules.
B.It is usually used casually.
C.It requires a good command of English.
D.It’s simply a way to reduce word count.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.A Language is Widely Used
B.Linguists Approve of Totesing
C.English Has Greatly Improved
D.E-slang Catches on Among Youth

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As an outdoor lover, I’ve made it a routine to explore different regions annually with a friend during our vacation. This year, apart from beauty of nature, I’ve experienced something more.
It was late afternoon.A few hours before sunset, Christina and I decided to hike to Acomat Falls, tucked away in the rainforest.
Expecting to spend no more than an hour at the falls, we wore T-shirts and swimsuits and hadn’t told anyone where we were going. After crossing the wide river at a shallow spot and walking upstream about 100 yards, we reached the falls at around 4 p.m.We dove into the green pool and floated on our backs, marveling at the canyon walls.
By 4:30, Christina reminded me that we needed to head back to the car before dark, but I was waist deep in the river trying to photograph the falls, the hanging vines, and the dreaminess of the place.Christina had to wait on a stone.I finally took a good photo——and then she screamed.
With a crack like thunder, a violent wall of water rushed over the falls, turning the dreamy swimming pool into a churning monster.Flash flood! I jumped out of the river seconds before the flood crashed over the spot where I’d just been standing.Christina scrambled barefoot off the boulder toward higher ground.Christina and I clawed our way up the canyon on all fours, grabbing vines to pull ourselves up.I looked over my shoulder and saw that the water had risen 20 feet in less than a minute.
Christina led us through dense bush, prickly trees, and ankle-deep mud. When we’d climbed 200 feet, we stopped to catch our breath. Now we had a different problem: The road was on the other side of the swollen river. We were stuck in the rain-forested mountain.
We had no rain jackets and were exhausted from the scramble.Christina asked if I had my phone. It was soaking wet, but still blinked on.No service. We decided to move toward higher ground to get a better signal. It was almost dark. For a moment, the phone connected, and I heard the faint voice of Mary, our rental host. She said she’d call for help. Then the phone went silent---no signal again.
