  • 21、Han Tianheng picked up a carving knife at the age of 6 and never put it down. Today, the 79 year-old artist, one of China’s most respected living masters of seal carving(印章雕刻), calligraphy and Chinese painting, still remembers the incident the first time he held a knife in his hand.

“I cut my thumb badly and was scared by the bloody sight,” he said, adding that his mother applied ashes because she couldn’t afford to take him to a hospital. “The cut left a scar, which is still clear today.”

An eye for an eye and blood for blood, the incident didn’t set him back. Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form. He was determined to pursue a path that would lead to a career in seal carving. Han said.

The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy for the young man in his pursue for excellence, and his seal works were seriously criticized by a famous old painter.

Most would have crumbled under the criticism, not Han. It made him even more determined. After six months’ hard work, he visited the painter again.

“This time, he asked me to carve a seal for him. This was positive affirmation,” Han said. “Praise is candy and criticism is medicine. We can live without candy, but cannot live without medicine when ill.”

Han rose to fame during the early 1960s famous for bird and insect seal art. Han’s seals are an essential ending part on the paintings of a long list of well-known artists.

“A seal for a good painting is like the buttons for an haute couture(高档女子时装). An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that matches the whole style. What’s more, a good seal carver should keep his own style, and at the same time go well with the painting’s style.” he said.

【1】What influence did the incident have on Han when he was six?

    A.He got injured very seriously.

B.He learned how to use a knife.

【2】What does the underlined word “bumpy” in Para.4 mean ?

    A.Smooth

    B.Inspiring

    C.Boring

【3】In Han’s opinion, what do an experienced tailor and a good seal carver share?

    A.The huge respect they earn.

B.The flexibility they display at work.

    C.The targeted customers they serve.

D.The efforts they have to make to succeed.

【4】In which section, of a newspaper does this text most probably appear?

  • 22、Table tennis may not seem a reasonable option for someone with no arms — but Ibrahim Hamadtou doesn't believe in limits. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian breaks the barrier by holding the paddle (球拍) in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.

Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. "I was once watching a match between two of my friends," Hamadtou explains. "They disagreed on a point, When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, 'Mind your own business as you will never be able to play.' It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis."

It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to control his body. "I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things, which weren't working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the paddle with my mouth and making the serve. With practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved."

The Egyptian's incredible talent came to light in 2014 when he was awarded the best Arab Athlete of the year. He won a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships, qualified for his first Paralympics in 2016 at 43, and then again for the 2020 Tokyo Games at 48.

  • 23、How do I know if I have a cold, the flu or COVID-19?

Experts say testing is the best way to determine what you have since symptoms of the illnesses can overlap, which means the symptoms are similar to each other. The viruses that cause colds, the flu and COVID-19 are spread the same way-through droplets from the nose and mouth of infected people.

The time varies when someone with any of the illnesses will start feeling sick. Some people infected with the coronavirus (冠状病毒) don’t experience any symptoms, but it’s still possible for them to spread it.

Cough, fever, tiredness and muscle aches are common to both the flu and COVID-19, says Kristen Coleman, as assistant research professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. Common colds, meanwhile, are often milder with symptoms including a stuffy nose. Fevers are more common with the flu.

Despite some false descriptions online, the viruses have not merged (合并) to create a new illness. But it’s possible to get the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, which some are calling “flurona”. “A co-infection of any kind can be severe or worsen your symptoms altogether,” says Coleman. “If flu cases continue to rise, we can expect to see more of these types of viral co-infections in the coming weeks or months.”

With many similar symptoms caused by the three virus types, testing remains the best choice to determine which one you may have. Some pharmacies (药房) offer testing for both viruses at the same time, Coleman notes. “This can help doctors offer the right treatment. But most do not have the ability to routinely do this, especially during a COVID-19 surge(激增),” Coleman says.

Getting vaccinated (打疫苗) helps to reduce the spread of the viruses. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is safe to get a flu and COVID-19 shot or booster at the same time.

【1】What conclusion can we draw from the second paragraph?

A.People with COVID-19 can spread it to others only when they are having obvious symptoms.

B.People with COVID-19 start to feel sick much earlier than people with other illnesses.

C.People start to feel sick around the same time with colds, the flu, or COVID-19.

D.People start to feel sick at different times for each illness.

【2】What is NOT mentioned as symptoms of a cold, the flu or COVID-19?

    A.Cough.

    B.Tiredness.

    C.Throat aches.

    D.A high temperature.

【3】What can we know from the fifth paragraph?

A.Necessary testing contributes to proper treatment.

B.COVID-19 is out of control due to lack of testing.

C.Doctors can’t treat patients without testing results.

D.Pharmacies can offer testing only with doctors’ permission.

【4】What is recommended in the passage to avoid COVID-19?

    A.Getting tested.

    B.Getting treated.

    C.Getting assisted.

    D.Getting vaccinated.
