二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Standing on the edge of the plane, looking at the ground below, my tandem skydiving(双人跳伞)instructor, Bill, turned to me. “Any last words?” he asked. “Yes,” I said, joking. “I hope my parachute opens.”

I'd never felt more alive as Bill and 1 stepped out and sated our freefall. Those first few seconds were amazing. I felt like a weightless piece of paper. As we reached 4,000 feet, I felt a parachute open above us. This, I was old, would slow us down for a smooth descent. So why were we still traveling so fast? I looked up: The parachute was unopened in the wind. I asked Bill, “Are we going to die?” He said he didn't know.

At that moment, I just felt guilty. I'd brought my family along for the day: my parents, sisters, their partners and children. I'd invited them along to watch me die.

We hit the ground. I was immediately breathless, and an unimaginable pain shot up my back as we bounced into a lake on a golf course. I was somehow still alive. Gathering all my strength, I turned to face Bill. He started screaming. From my neck down, I could barely move. We were found by some golfers. My mother and sister cried uncontrollably as Bill was put into a helicopter, and I was placed into an ambulance.

The next four or five months were intense. I had broken my back. After being discharged(出院)from the hospital, I locked myself in my bedroom and took painkillers. I became terrified of the outside world.

After years of therapy and hard work, the deep physical and mental pain is healing. I heard that Bill made a full recovery and returned to skydiving.

I was always terrified of being myself and doing the things I wanted. Now I've learned that I need to be fearless. There's nothing like falling from 15,000 feet without a parachute—and surviving—to force you to make the most of every day.

【1】What happened during the tandem skydiving?

A.The author stayed calm the whole time.

B.Something went wrong with the parachute.

C.Bill didn't open the parachute in time.

D.The author couldn't breathe during the freefall.

【2】What does the underlined word “descent” mean in the second paragraph?

    A.Fall.

    B.Shake.

    C.Float.

    D.Swing.

【3】How did the accident influence the author?

A.He had constant pain in his head.

B.He became crazy about extreme sports.

C.He developed a serious mental problem.

D.He became more confident in himself.

【4】What did the author eventually realize?

    A.Safety first.

    B.Fear can lead to failure.

    C.Cooperation matters.

    D.Seize and cherish every day.

  • 22、   People back in the United States are always asking me, “What's it like to live in China?” They hope to hear strange stories about weird food and cultural conflicts. Instead, I tell them that living in China is like being a baby.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I don’t think that Chinese people are babies. I am a baby. Or at least, I become one when I leave my house. That’s because babies can’t read, and when I leave my house in Beijing, I’m illiterate (不识字的).

This can be dangerous. If a sign says, “Watch out for big angry bears,” in Chinese, I will continue walking, completely ignorant of my peril (危险). Then a bear will eat me for breakfast.

I have started to recognize a few characters, but they seem impossible to ever learn without a lifetime of study. When I see a character I like. I give it a name. There is “The Square,”“The Octopus(章鱼) ,”“The-upside-down Octopus,” and my favorite, “Upside-down Octopus on an airplane.” However, I still don't know their sounds or meanings. They are just beautiful mysteries to my eyes.

Because I can’t read, city streets present an endless series of enigmas. If I see a business, I wonder, “Is that a restaurant? A dentist? A lawyer’s office?” Once, while hungry, I saw a big colorful sign. I walked in and asked a realtor (房屋中介) to see the drink menu.

Speaking of menus, eating at restaurant is a daily misadventure. Many places have photos of food, which is helpful. But if they have no photos, I walk from table to table and point at whatever looks delicious. I apologize if I’ve ever interrupted your dinner to point at your plate. I didn’t mean to be rude. I was just a hungry baby!

1Why does the author think living in China is like being a baby ______

A.Some Chinese people behave like babies.

B.It’s comfortable to be a baby in China.

C.He is as curious as a baby about Chinese things.

D.He is like a new-born who can’t read at all.

2What do we know about the author ______

A.He can order food in simple Chinese.

B.He doesn't know many Chinese Characters.

C.His spoken Chinese is better than his written Chinese.

D.He memorizes Chinese words based on their sounds.

3In Paragraph 5, what does the underlined word “enigmas” mean ______

    A.Stories.

    B.Miracles.

    C.Choices.

    D.Puzzles.

4What is the passage mainly about ______

A.The author’s love for Chinese food.

B.The language barrier the author meets in China.

C.Cultural conflicts the author faces in China.

D.How the author overcomes difficulties in learning Chinese.

  • 23、A Whale of a Time

The annual whale festival in Hermanus, South Africa, kicks off today. The coastal town, located on the Western Cape about 1.5 hours from Cape Town, is well-known for whale watching. It is one of the best locations in the world to witness the migration of southern fight whales. The festival, which is the only eco-arts festival in South Africa, attracts upward of 130, 000 visitors.

Hermanus also takes pride in the world’s only “Whale Crier”. His job is to go around and herald the whereabouts of whales to everyone—with his horn. Fortunately, the timing of the festival almost guarantees a whale sighting—as close as a few meters from shore!

The whales are, of course, the main attraction of the festival, but many more terrific activities are available. The seaside environment, with the mountains as a backdrop, makes an ideal setting to enjoy the festival’s musical performances and fantastic seafood. For those who desire more adventure, there’s open water swimming, a night run and sports challenges. And there are other festivities and entertainment for kids. With something for everyone, what more could ask for?

1What’s the main attraction of the whale festival in Hermanus?

    A.Whale criers. B.Coastal landscape.

    C.Whale watching. D.Migration of fish.

2What does “herald” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Prove. B.Signal. C.Choose. D.Arrange.

3What might an adventure lover prefer?

    A.A night run. B.Fantastic seafood.

    C.Musical performance. D.Seaside environment.

4The underlined sentence tells us in the whale festival___________

A.nothing can be expected. B.everyone can enjoy themselves.

C.everyone can ask for more. D.more fun can be expected.

  • 24、The Oscar - winning 2013 musical Frozen, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, followed the tale of two princess sisters, Elsa and Anna. They were forced to grow up isolated from each other and the world because of Elsa’s potentially dangerous magic ability to control ice. The film earned an amazing $1.27 billion box office worldwide, and fans were so charmed by the characters-that they weren’t able to “Let It Go”, crazily calling for a sequel (续集).

Finally, Frozen II comes into its fans’ eyes. However, the beginning of Frozen II is not convincing, largely because it overturns much of the character development Anna and Elsa went through in the first movie. At the end of Frozen, Elsa had learned that her powers were a gift, and she had become confident and proud in using them. At the beginning of Frozen II, that confidence is gone.

Whatever technical advancements have been made in computer animation over the past six years aren’t readily apparent in Frozen II. It mostly has the same frosty look as the first film. A sea battle between Elsa and a glowing ice horse leaves the most striking impression on the audience.

The biggest failure? The music. In Frozen, even the throwaway songs enjoyed great popularity, let alone the theme song Let It Go. Returning composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez try to give Elsa two showstopping numbers: Into the Unknown and Show Yourself. But neither song reaches any emotional heights. (Never mind that there really isn’t a show to stop.)

Yes, Frozen II is a letdown to most audience, especially the fans of the original. It’s hard to see how the same team who made something so cool in 2013 could deliver something so-there’s no other word for it-lukewarm.

【1】What do we know about the musical Frozen?

A.Its theme song didn’t reach fans’ heart.

B.It didn’t earn profit through its box office.

C.It was a big hit after it came into the market.

D.Its main characters lived together in their childhood.

【2】What is the most impressive part of Frozen II?

    A.A sea battle.

    B.Technical advancement.

    C.A different beginning.

    D.The newly-created music.

【3】What does the author think of the musical Frozen II?

    A.Breathtaking.

    B.Disturbing.

    C.Moving.

    D.Disappointing.

【4】What type of writing is this text?

    A.An announcement.

    B.A film review.

    C.An official report.

    D.A show guide.

  • 25、   Although it is difficult to make direct year-to-year comparisons because of increase in viewing on digital devices, the trend over the past decade is clear in numerous studies, including the Nielsen ratings. The average age of those who watch nationally televised Major League Baseball games has been _____ these years. Asked in a survey whether they _____ baseball, nearly two-thirds of those ages 18 to 36 said no.

Michael Haupert, a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin ----la Crosse who studies baseball as a business, explains why many young people might be _____ by what to an older and more knowledgeable fan is one of the most exciting experiences in sports: a no-hitter. ” Failure is more ______ than success,” he says. ”If my students get a third of the answers right on their test, they fail. However, if a ballplayer gets a hit a third of the time, he’s often one of the _____ .” But watch an NBA game for 15 seconds, and you will likely see one team score.

It is not surprising that ______ the length of games----about three hours in recent years-----and increasing the pace of action has become a subject of discussion among those who love baseball. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is strongly ______ of both. For the 2018 season, the league issued a set of new rules designed to do just that. Mound visits are limited. A timer countdown is designed to shorten the break between innings().

No one knows if any of these changes will significantly shorten games. According to MLB, the average length of a nine-inning outing this season has been three hours---about five minutes shorter than the 2017 average, itself the longest mean on record.

All of those proposed changes seem to ______ the point. I interviewed at least 100 semi-fans in their late teens and early 20s for my recent book. All considered themselves fans to some degree, though they ______  watched more than snatches—on iPads or smartphones. They told me it made no difference whether a game lasted two or three hours: they would not pay attention for _____ amount of time.

The historic May 14 Supreme Court decision allowing all states to legalize sports betting could have an impact on all this. More people will soon be able to gamble on sports while watching a game on their couch. But whether ______ gambling will attract more young people to baseball is a huge unknown. Many already gamble, both legally and illegally, on fantasy sports, but legalization will provide yet another ______ during games in real time. Will some states allow betting reports in broadcasts? Will it make the young more likely to bet on baseball than on other sports? Stay tuned.

I don’t know what will hook young people on baseball. But abandoning the game’s unique selling proposition---the timelessness that provides both suspense and great conversationhe educated fan -----is not the ______ . Baseball, Clark told me, is like a game of chess---and too many ______ - changes might turn it into something “more similar to a game of checkers.” Baseball may survive in spite of its challenges, precisely because it stands out and stands up against the short ______ spans that negatively affect every aspect of our culture, including politics and education. As Casey Stengel is reported to have said,” Never make predictions, especially about the future. ”

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.

Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura’s mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.

A few days later, Laura’s mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. “They won’t help me and I can’t get better by myself,” Laura said.

Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practising to help you find ways to improve?”

“But the season’s over, Mum. No more practice, remember?” Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practising even when the season is over. Laura protested, “But to practise plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone.”

Laura’s mother patted her and said, “We’ll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere.” While Laura’s mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring nod before passing her the key. “This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let’s build something tomorrow.” Laura’s mother said.
