二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As we all know, Antarctica is surrounded by icebergs and it is the coldest, driest and windiest continent on the earth. However, the finger-shaped piece of ice that recently broke loose from the western side of the Ronne Ice Shelf-the most extensive ice platforms-is worthy of a mention. Measuring approximately 105 miles long and 15 miles wide, it covers a surface area of 1,660 square miles and is currently the world’s largest iceberg.

The massive piece of ice floating in the Weddell Sea was first spotted on May 13, 2021, by Dr. Keith Makinson at the British Antarctic Survey and later confirmed by images taken by the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Sentinel-IA satellite. Since the iceberg is located in Antarctica’s quadrant A (A象限)-the Bellingshausen/Weddell Sea region-and is the 76th one named by the US National Ice Center scientists, it was called A-76.

Researchers say that periodic (周期性的) calving of icebergs like A-76 is a part of an ice shelf’s normal life span and most likely not related to climate change. They conclude that the massive piece will drift (漂移) through the South Atlantic for several years before breaking into smaller pieces and melting. Since the iceberg has already replaced the water it will add to the ocean as it melts, it will not contribute to rising sea levels.

Though A-76 is undoubtedly larger than the existing record-holder-a 1,540-square-mile iceberg named A-23A that is still floating in the Weddell Sea, it is not the biggest iceberg in recorded history. That honor goes to B-15, which measured 4,200 square miles-about the size of the island of Jamaica-when it broke off Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf in 2000.

【1】What can we know about the Ronne Ice Shelf?

A.It is like a finger in shape.

B.It’s a very extensive ice platform.

C.It’s the largest iceberg in history.

D.Its surface area is over 1,660 square miles.

【2】Which of the following can make sure A-76 exists?

    A.Antarctica’s creatures.

    B.Dr. Keith Makinson’s discovery.

    C.Pictures from Sentinel-1A satellite.

D.The US National Ice Center scientists.

【3】What does the underlined word “calving” mean in the third paragraph?

    A.Breaking.

    B.Finding.

    C.Disappearing.

    D.Forming.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A.A-76 will become water soon.

    B.A-76 is smaller than A-23A.

C.A-23A can still be seen now.

D.B-15 can still be seen now.

  • 22、I have two sons. They are as different as night and day. My youngest is sweet, loveable, easy-going, and finds joy in everything. My oldest we’ve nicknamed the “Evil Genius” is ambitious, self-confident, and suffers no fools.

Whenever we mentioned Santa my husband and I were rewarded with major eye rolling and deep sighs from my oldest. At first we both tried to ignore it.

We both knew that our eldest had figured out the big secret. But I’d be damned(指责) if he was going to ruin it for his six-year-old brother who had plenty of Santa-loving years ahead of him. I looked at my husband in the eye and said, “I’ll handle this.” to which he responded “Okay just be careful because I’m not sure he knows - he might just be acting like it.” But I knew. And I had it in my mind that he was about to break his younger brothers spirit and break the news to him. I was afraid he was going to take the Christmas spirit away from my sweet innocent youngest and stamp all over it. I had to protect him. I needed to control this now before it got out of control. I rushed into the play room where my oldest was playing alone. I looked him dead in the eyes and said: “Well you know Santa isn’t real, right?” And as I stared at my eight-year-old son for what seemed like a long time of silence, his eyes started to fill with tears.  And a tear dropped down his cheek when he screamed out, “He’s not?”

“Um well it’s not that he’s not real (shut up you idiot- stop saying he’s not real), but he doesn’t really make and deliver all the toys. Dad and I get some of them for you. So he’s real. He’s just got a little help from us.”

________________He just sat there looking at me with an expression of doubt.

You know when you make a terrible mistake but you can’t stop yourself from making it worse? That was me because I just had to know. I had to know why he had seemed to be over Santa. So I asked him why he rolled his eyes and sighed every time his father and I mentioned Santa, to which he replied that kids at school had been saying Santa wasn't real but that he still thought he was.

    D. “Evil Genius” had been influenced by his classmates.

3What does the underlined sentence mean in the passage?

    A. “Evil Genius” refused to buy toys.

    B. “Evil Genius” didn’t believe his mother’s words.

    D. “Evil Genius” would not give away the secret.

4What lesson can we learn from the story?

    A. Lies can never change facts.

    C. No one is perfect.

    D. We should think twice before we act.

  • 23、A method to transform a commonly thrown-away plastic to a resin (树脂) used in 3D printing could allow making better use of plastic waste, A team of Washington State University researchers developed a simple and efficient way to transform polyactic acid (PLA) (聚乳酸), a bio-based plastic used in products such as filament, plastic silverware and food packaging to high-quality resin.

“We found a way to immediately turn this into something that’s stronger and better, and we hope that will provide people with the inspiration to upcycle this stuff instead of just throw it away,” said Yu-Chung Chang, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and a co-corresponding author on the work. “We made stronger materials just straight out of trash. We believe this could be a great opportunity.”

Although it’s bio-based, PLA, which is categorized as a number 7 plastic, doesn’t bread down easily. It can float in fresh or salt water for a year without degrading (降解). It is also rarely recycled because like many plastics, when it’s melted down and re-formed, it doesn’t perform as well as the original version and becomes less valuable.

“It’s biodegradable and compostable, but once you look into it, it turns out that it can take up to 100 years for it to rot away in a landfill,” Chang said. “In reality, it still creates a lot of pollution. We want to make sure that when we do start producing PLA on the million-tons scale, we will know how to deal with it.”

While the researchers focused on PLA for the study, they hope to apply the work to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (涤纶树脂), which is more common than PLA and has a similar chemical structure and present a bigger waste problem. They have filed a temporary patent and are working further optimize (优化) the process. The researchers ane also looking into other applications for the upcycling method.

【1】What can the method help do according to paragraph 1?

    A.Solve financial crisis.

    B.Change waste into wealth.

    C.Control plastic production

    D.Determine 3D printing skills

【2】What does Yu-Chung Chang think of the method?

    A.Promising

    B.Unrealistic

    C.Imaginable

    D.Common

【3】Which of the following is a feature of number 7 plastics?

    A.Invaluable to recycle

    B.Easy to deal with

    C.Hard to break down

    D.Difficult to sort out.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Applications for an upcycling method.

B.A better method to break down plastic

C.3D printing with newly found materials

D.A new way to turn plastic into valuable products.

  • 24、People have always wanted to know what the future will look like. Then, how can we? 【1】   The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago, such as food, sleep, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. 【2】 No. In addition, generally speaking, the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human effort for freedom and communication, to be able to get in control of the time and world. Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years.

But why do we need to predict the future? Predicting the future is important for two reasons: First, we need to start to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation. 【3】

How about the virtual worlds? It might be in the future to experience the sand between your toes, and hear the waves, just lying in your bed at home. 【4】 So, even if a great invention is there for an affordable price, it’ll never take the place of the common experience if it is not real.

【5】 What we’ll see in the next 50 years is the transition (过渡) from an oil-dependent society to a new society. Here there’ll be new medicine, continued exploration of space, challenges in the climate change, and new inventions that make life a little easier.

A.So what will the future look like then?

B.Will this change in the next 150 years?

C.Predicting the future can help us in many ways.

D.However, you’ll never get the feeling of being there.

E.Well, to understand the future, you must know the past.

F.However, no matter how real the experience will feel, it doesn’t happen for real.

G.Then we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will give the best result in the future.
