24、A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to cheer us up or let us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative (正面和负面) influences are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too shy to admit(承认) it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more scientists believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us make ourselves active, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. It is said that as much as 77% of self-talk is likely to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the influence they will have. But we should realize that our words cause certain influence in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the salesperson will probably answer in a similar manner. Otherwise you may get into trouble.
Words have power because of their lasting influences. Many of us feel sorry for something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-confidence and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to cure? The choice is ours.
【1】There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because ________.
A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
C. we may gain quite a few advantages of talking to ourselves
D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

25、 The world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the 55-km-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB), opened on Oct 24, 2018. The bridge connects Hong Kong and Macao to the Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai. The construction of HZMB began in 2009 and cost about 120 billion yuan. The Guardian described it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world” and would change the way people live.
The HZMB is unique in many ways. It is designed for a long service life of 120 years, which is 20 years longer than that of other bridges.
The HZMB also makes it much more convenient to travel between the three areas it connects. It will shorten the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai to about 45 minutes, 3 hours earlier than before.
And it’s not just a bridge. In one section, the bridge turns into a 6.7-km undersea tunnel that passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world's longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing large ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.
By drawing local cities closer, the bridge will do good to the area's development. It is expected to drive the economic development of Hong Kong, Macao and nine Guangdong cities.

D.The tunnel of HZMB can hardly allow ships to pass through the sea area above.
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.There are more than 2 man-made islands above the tunnels.
B.The economic development of all the cities in Guangdong can be developed.

26、Hanukkah (光明节), the annual (每年的) Festival of Lights, is celebrated with zeal (热情) by the Jewish people around the world. They celebrate the holiday with the lighting of the menorah (多连灯烛台) , traditional foods, games and gifts. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival. It falls on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kiskv (犹太教历), which is usually sometime in December. The festival celebrates the time, over 2,000 years ago, when the Jewish people fought against an emperor who would not let them follow their own traditions and religion (宗教) . When the Jewish people won back their temple in Jerusalem(耶路撒冷), they found there was only enough holy(神圣的) oil to keep the sacred light (神圣之灯) burning for one day. However, to their surprise, this small amount of oil kept the light burning for eight days and nights, until the people had time to make more oil.
At the center of the Hanukkah celebrations is a candle stick (called a Menorah) that holds nine candles. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue (犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle (奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. People exchange gifts and greeting cards, and children go to parties. Parents often give their children money at Hanukkah. Potato cakes, called latkes, are a traditional Hanukkah food. 27、I had hidden the long black bag in the garage(车库) for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.
It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to complete my plan.
First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 pm was not early. As usual, I read them a bed-time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would learn my secret.
Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbors might hear me and call the police.
It was already eleven o'clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer(铁锤).
After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn't be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas had brought them this year.

28、 National Doctors’ Day is a holiday in the United States. It is a holiday that honors doctors for the work they do for their【1】, the communities they work in and for society as a whole. It is their hard work that keeps all of us healthy and this day thanks them for doing that for us【2】our loved ones. We give greeting cards to doctors, both alive and【3】. The red carnation is also still popularly used to say “thank you” to doctors for their work in medicine.
Now when you need to see a doctor, surely you will want to see a good one. But there is one important thing you may never have thought about: Has your doctor rested enough?
Doctors in our country often have to work 34 hours or even【4】 (long) without sleep. Most of them work 104 hours a week, and some even 150. (There are only 168 hours a【5】!)
