25、After years of studying human nature, I have found something interesting. Whether you are a successful person or an common person depends on two things—curiosity (好奇心) and discontent (不满足). I have never known a successful man who is short of either. And I have never known an ordinary man who had both. The two belong together.
“The great man.” said Mencius (孟子), “is the person who does not lose the innocent heart of a child.” But most of us lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging things. We just follow the crowd. Luckily, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and only need to keep them awake. How should you start? I think of one friend who couldn’t grow flowers well enough to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower growing.
▲ You don’t have any special ability? Most people don’t. You don’t have any time? That’s good because things are always done by the people with no time. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, because you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

26、Many hospitals have blood banks. In these banks, blood of all types is stored. When blood is needed, it is taken from the bank. Healthy people then give blood to the bank to replace (取代) the blood that is used. Blood can be kept in the fridge for about three weeks with a kind of chemical.
When people lose much of their blood because of operations or accidents, they may need transfusions(输血). Some people may need transfusions because of illness. Sometimes only a part of the blood is used for transfusions. Plasma(血浆), the liquid part of the blood , may be given alone. Transfusions of plasma are often given when people have been badly burned.
When a person gets a transfusion, he gets blood of the same type as his. Or there may be a bad reaction(反应). To make it safer, before a transfusion is given, the blood to be used must be tested with the blood of the person who is to receive it. This testing is called cross matching of the blood.
Oswald Robertson, an American doctor, was the first one to give transfusions. He used blood that had been stored for some time to help wounded soldiers in 1918 in World War One.

29、①Some days, don’t you think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if the clothes just washed itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!
②A team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, found a way to put special nanostructures (纳米结构) into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and marks that don’t belong on your clothes.
③The nanostructures don’t break down the real clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to break down. According to CNN, the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(铜) nanostructures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.
④So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can also be good for the environment.
⑤According to the US Department of Energy, washing a piece of clothing uses about 25 gallons of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.
⑥“There’s more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,” said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan, “but this is a strong foundation(基础).” So what’s the next step? Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or asking clothing makers to treat(处理) the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.
