25、My dad was a plumber(水管工) for the public works department in our town, so from time to time he came into my school. Can you imagine sitting in class and seeing your dad walk past the door of your classroom and wave his hand at you? In junior high?
One girl in our class always made fun of me because my dad was a plumber and hers was a lawyer(律师), and she would say things like, “Ew, that’s gross(粗俗的)!” I must admit I was sometimes embarrassed by what my dad did, especially in my early teens, when the only thing I really cared about was what the other girls thought.
The girl lived a few streets away from us, and one winter day---the day her elder sister was getting married---the toilet in their main upstairs bathroom broke and there was water everywhere. Her father, the lawyer called every plumber in the Yellow Page, but nobody would come and because we were having a major snowstorm. Her daughter told him that my father was a plumber, and he called, and my dad went right over---and took me with him.(Maybe he was hoping that the lawyer’s daughter would be nicer to me.) My father fixed the toilet, help them clean up everything, and didn’t take much time for his trouble. But as we were leaving, he told the girl, “If I ever need a lawyer, I’ll be happy to call your dad.”
As we walked to our car, he said to me, “Do you believe he didn’t know where the main shut-off valve(阀) was? What a dumb ass!”
From that point on, her dad was known in school as Lawyer Dumb Ass.
When my husband and I bought our house, the first thing my dad showed him was the main shut-off valve.
I have always been proud to say that I’m a plumber’s daughter.

26、Attachment is not just a connection between two people; it´s a tie that involves a desire for regular contact with the person and the experience of pain during separation from that person.
According to psychologist John Bowlby, there are four critical characteristics of attachment. The first is the desire to be hear those with whom we share an attachment since we are happy while staying with them. Attachments also create a shelter, meaning that during times of pain, fear, or uncertainty, we may seek out the people we're attached to for care comfort. Next, attachment figures also offer a secure base for exploration. This is particularly important during childhood. This secure base allows kids to explore the world while they know they can still return to the safety of the attachment figure. Finally, we experience separation pain when parted from an attachment figure. For example, kids tend to become upset when parents have to leave them in the care of others.
Attachment serves a number of important purposes. For instance, it helps keep babies and children close to the caregivers so that they can avoid potential dangers, which in turn helps increase their chances of survival. However, if a child doesn’t form a secure attachment to a caregiver, he or she will suffer from a number of problems including conduct disorder and oppositional-defiant (对立反抗的) disorder. Researchers also suggest that the type of attachment displayed early in life can have a lasting effect on later adult relationships.
Psychologist Harry Harlow conducted an experiment on social isolation (孤立) in monkeys. Baby monkeys were separated from their mothers and placed with surrogate mothers (代 母).One mother was simply a wire armature (支架) that held a bottle, while the other mother was covered with a soft terry cloth material. Harlow found that the baby monkeys would receive food from the wire mother, but preferred to spend most of their time with the soft mother. When compared to monkeys that had been raised by their birth mothers, the monkeys raised by surrogate mothers were shyer and more nervous and suffered from social and emotional problems.
All in all, developing secure and healthy attachments early in life is very important. Such attachments play a vital rol1 our future development.

27、For Serena Aunon-Chancellor, joining the Young Astronauts Club was more than an after-school hobby, it was the very beginning of her journey to space!
Serena was born on April 9, 1976, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. When she was growing up in the 1980s, NASA launched space shuttles(发射航天飞机) many times a year.
