24、 An elderly carpenter (木匠) was ready to retire (退休).He told his boss of his plans to leave the house business and live a more comfortable life with his wife enjoying his big family, looking after their grandchildren. He would miss the paycheck (薪金), but he really needed to retire. The boss was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter agreed, but this time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He used bad materials and worked carelessly. It was an unlucky way to end his career. When the man finished his work and the boss came to check the house, he handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said. "My gift to you." What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he has to live in the home he had built sadly.
So it is with us. We build our lives in an absent-minded way, willing to do less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shame, we fall into the situation we have created and find we are now living in the "house" we have built.
【1】The elderly carpenter planned to live a more comfortable life alone.
【2】The boss asked the man to build just one more house as a personal favor.
【3】The man agreed with the boss, he used the good materials and worked carefully.
【4】After checking the house, the boss didn't give it to the man as a gift.
【5】From the story, we learn your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past.
25、A friend asked me for my Calgary address last week. “Oh, are you sending me a present?” I asked. “I love presents.”
“No, it’s not for you. It’s not about you,” he said, “it’s for baby Rowan.”
Damn. He’s right. No one cares about me any more. At 5:30 the other morning, exhausted after another sleepless night, I hit my nose on the bedroom wall while walking. There was a lot of blood and I wanted comfort, so I called my mommy.
“So did you e-mail the list yet?” my mother asked.
What? Didn’t she hear me? I had just told her that I ---her daughter had walked into a wall and had likely broken my nose and would have to go to a doctor.
“We need to buy all the things for the baby Rowan,” she answered. “You’d better get on with that.”
My husband and I are coming back to Toronto for a visit next week and my mother offered to buy and set up a baby room in our house before our arrival. My list was very long and included everything for baby Rowan.
Whenever people call now, they want to know about baby Rowan first. On my husband’s birthday several weeks ago, even his parents asked how Rowan was before wishing him—their son---a happy birthday.
We took baby Rowan out for her first dining experience. I was so hungry that I thought I would faint.
“So, how old is she?” the waitress asked.
“She’s four weeks old,” I answered. “How big is your salad? Is it enough for a meal?”
Was the waitress pretending not to hear me? “On, she’s so small,” she responded. “How much does she weigh?”
“Yes, yes, she is small. Should I start with a Diet Coke?”
“She’s really cute,” the waitress continued.
Yah,yah, she is lovely but can I please order now?
All this has made me realize that indeed, it’s no longer about me. So I’ve gotten smart. At the bottom of the list of things I want my parents to get for baby Rowan, I added a few things for me. Perhaps my parents will actually believe that a five-week-old can eat apples and yogurt and drink bottled water.
【1】Rowan is ________

C. able to eat apples. D. living with her grandparents.
【2】Why did the writer call her mother the other day?

C. The waitress became politer because of the baby.
D. Baby Rowan has changed the writer’s life and makes her feel less important.
26、
When my daughter was in primary school, one day she brought home 4 tiny trees, which were given to the students by the school to plant. None of them looked very strong but with a hope for the future.
I planted them in our backyard. Over the years an accident brought an end to three of them. All that was left was a weak tree. It grew very slowly and never got very tall. I noticed a few years ago that it was starting to die. The needles on the branches had turned brown. Only the top third of the tree was still green.
Last summer I did my best to save it but it was useless. This morning I went out and looked at it again. I was deciding on whether it would be better to just cut it down.
As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the needles. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the top branches.
I smiled when I looked at it and decided that maybe this old tree had some life and usefulness left in it yet. It may not be healthy or pretty but it was still giving a bird a home and oxygen (氧气) to this world.
This tree reminded me of something too. All of our lives have purpose. All of our lives have meaning. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath there are things for us to do, love for us to give, and joy for us to share. Until our last moment here we can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.
【1】None of the tiny trees looked ______.
A.short B.tall C.weak D.strong
【2】A few years later, ______ of the trees still grew slowly in the backyard.
