24、 “Promise me I’ll die in my own bed and I won’t die alone.”
There it was. Almost three years ago Dad asked me to make those promises. I said yes. And yet, I broke both. I gazed at my two-year-old son. Today is his birthday.
“Promise me...” The voice came from the grave(坟墓). Or was it simply my own guilt(内疚) ridden imagination? Whichever, I wished it would leave me alone and let me enjoy my son’s birthday.
Over two years ago, I broke my first promise. But what else could I have done? The battle(战斗) against his cancer was lost. All that was left was to keep him comfortable and manage his pain. My sisters and I decided his remaining days would be in a hospital. Determined to keep the other promise, I made sure he was never alone. And then came that day.
It was early morning. I was alone with Dad, waiting for my sisters to come and spare me. I heard my dad’s breath, his only voice for over a week, when my phone rang. The baby was coming. A nurse directed me to see my wife, two floors up. Yes, everything was fine. “Shall I show you to the family waiting room?” I refused, thanking the nurse as I headed down the stairs. But too late. I broke my second promise. Dad had died alone. Joy, guilt. My son and my broken promise.
The voice came again. I cried, head buried in my hands. I felt two little but strong hands, pulling my own hands away from my face. “Grandpapa!” My son shouted while leading me into the living room and pointed to a drawer in the desk. I opened the drawer and took out the picture—my dad’s.
How had he known about that photo? How did he know it was his grandfather? I had never taken it out of the drawer since shortly after my dad’s death. A new life entering the world exactly the moment an old one leaves. Could these two lives have somehow passed each other, maybe even knew each other? Perhaps Dad didn’t die alone after all.

25、 To move visual technology into the future, sometimes it helps to make a little noise.
Researchers have used sound waves to produce floating 3-D images, create a sense of touch and even supply a soundtrack.
Since the 1940s, scientists have toyed with the concept of acoustic levitation(声悬浮)the use of soundwave vibrations to trap tiny things in midair. The technology has gained greater capabilities in the past decade. Some researchers believe this improvement could lead to applications such as contributing to novel 3- D printing methods, or creating displays that would be visible from any angle without requiring a screen.
Other researchers have also worked on visual displays that use acoustic levitation. In addition to visuals, the system can also produce audible noise to give the display a soundtrack. And the ultrasound speakers can also concentrate vibrations in one spot so that a finger might feel a sense pushing back——a little like the object shown by the floating image is really there Soundwaves create a 3-d display!
Display without a screen is remarkably useful. It means that everybody in the room can see the image——any angle, location——and that's extremely helpful. As a communications system, such a display might one day allow users to chat with a 3-D projection(投影)of a person who can turn his or her head to follow as they move around a room.
The display will require a lot more work before you can install it in your living room however. So far, this has been done in the research laboratory. We need to push it a little bit harder. We need to do more analysis to see if it would make sense to create a real display that people would have at home. The current system can only show simple graphics, such as a smiley face or figure eight, in real time.
Still, we are optimistic about the potential for this type of technology. If the system had only one speaker-covered surface instead of two, it could generate images that are bigger than the device itself. We can't make a TV image that's bigger than the TV --- even a projector has to have a projection screen that's bigger than the image itself. But with a volumetric(容积的)display, a small, portable device might produce a much larger picture. We can imagine in the future, having volumetric displays in watches, for example, that create large images that just project out of your watch

27、We’ve talked about snails (蜗牛) and their slow move. But much of the time snails don’t move at all. They’re in their shells (壳) —sleeping .
Hot sun will dry out a snail’s body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into its shell and closes the opening with a thin cover .Then it goes to sleep. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So whenever it rains, it goes inside its shell house and goes to sleep. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It can take a short sleep. Or it can sleep for days at a time. And it spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.
In spring the snail wakes up .Its body, about three inches long, comes out of from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. It can’t see very well. Its eyes, at the ends of the top feelers (触角)are very weak . But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to the new greens. Then the snail’s little mouth goes to work.
A snail’s mouth is no longer than the point of a pin(针). Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are so small that you can’t see them. But they do their work. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out. And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

“I ________ them,” the daughter said, “That’s how we’ve made a living. I have also saved money.”
