24、 Agatha Christie is undoubtedly queen of the detective story. Many people have fallen in love with her creations ﹣Hercule Poirot, a famous Belgian detective and Miss Marple, an old lady who is also an amateur (业余的)detective.
As I am a big fan of Agatha Christie, let me share with you an interesting story about her. The famous writer never forgot that night when she met a robber many years ago. That evening, she was invited to a birthday party which lasted until 2 o'clock in the morning. Agatha walked in the quiet street alone. Suddenly from the shadow of a dark building a tall man with a sharp knife in his right hand ran out at her. "Good morning, lady," the man said in a low voice, "I don't think you wish to die here!"
"What do you want?" Agatha asked.
"Your earrings. Take them off!"
Agatha suddenly had a bright idea. She tried to cover her necklace with the collar (衣领)of her coat while she used the other hand to take off both of her earrings and then she quickly threw them on the ground.
"Take them and let me go," she said. The robber saw that the girl didn't care for the earrings at all, only trying to protect the necklace. He thought the necklace would cost more, so he said, "Give me your necklace." "Oh, sir. It's not worth much. Please let me keep it.
"Stop talking rubbish. Quick!"
With shaky hands, Agatha took off her necklace. As soon as the robber disappeared, she picked up her earrings and ran as fast as she could to one of her friends. In fact, the earrings cost 480 pounds and the necklace the robber had taken away cost only six pounds.

26、 Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the sea. She lived a lonely life. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.
But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “Why can’t I do good to others?” At last, she came up with an idea.
She decided to keep a lighted lamp (灯) at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes broke up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The lady felt glad when the thought came through her mind. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil for the lamp and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.
She did this for five years without the hope of reward ( 报酬). However, good acts were often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.
She was happy with the thought that she was doing good. So, as long as she lived, she lit her lamp each night, and placed it at the window.

A.Lucky. B.Thankful. C.Sorry. D.Proud.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains.

27、 My parents taught me not to waste food. My mom always found ways to make leftovers (剩余食物) taste good. I went to Italia to learn about some of their special foods. As I was there, I learned about the food and the history of the area. I learned that they don't waste food, either, and they use leftovers!
Many years ago, there was not enough food for everyone. People learned to cook and eat almost everything. They had to think of ways to make special dishes. One of these dishes is kao zha. It's made with leftovers like meat, soup, oil and fat. That might not sound very good, but it does taste good. Today, kao zha is a special dish at big banquets (宴会).
Another famous dish is called zao bing. It's made with fruit, meat and other things. I really liked it! But I didn't want to cat too much. It has a lot of fat in it.
I smelled something burning and I saw smoke, so I found another special food of the Italian area -duck meat. The duck meat is put in a big oven to cook it. Smoke keeps the meat fresh. I don't usually cat meat, but this duck meat was delicious! It tasted sweet.
Italia is a great place with delicious food. I hope I can come back again!

How often do you let other people’s nonsense(胡说) change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed for the airport. We were driving when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space r【1】 in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brake, slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started shouting at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really f【2】. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck(垃圾车)”.
He e【3】 that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it personally: Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be happier. Don’t take their garbage and s【4】 it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s i【5】 in your life. Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his r【6】 that you remember bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you recall them more frequently.
So, Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the o【7】 who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
