四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In the 1920s and 30s the airlines were just beginning. It was unusual for people to travel by air because it was expensive and dangerous. In those days, there were no flight attendants to look after the passengers. Young men ,or “stewards” helped the passengers onto the airplane and carried the passengers’ luggage(行李)but they did not provide food and drinks. But then in 1930, a woman called Ellen Church invented the “stewardess”.

Ellen Church was born in 1904 on a farm in Iowa. She was a different child. She didn’t want to work on a farm or marry a farmer —she wanted a more adventurous(冒险的)life. Ellen studied to be a nurse at the University of Minnesota and then got a job in a hospital. For the next few years she stayed at the hospital but also took flying lessons and got her pilot’s license.

Ellen was twenty-five years old when she first got in touch with Boeing Air Transport. She loved flying but she understood that airlines were a man’s world. Although women like Emelia Earheart were becoming famous, she realized it was impossible for a woman to have a career as a pilot .But she had another idea. Most people were frightened of flying because. flying was still an unreliable(不可靠的) way to travel. There were often delays(延误),many crashes and the bad weathers made many passengers sick. Ellen thought nurses could take care of passengers during flights and B.A.T. agreed.

The young woman from Iowa and seven other nurses became the first air stewardesses.

At first pilots were unhappy because they did not want stewardesses on airplanes, but passengers loved the stewardesses. In 1940 there were around 1000 of them working for different airlines. The early “stewardesses” had to be under twenty-five-year-old, single and slim. When a woman joined an airline, she had to promise not to get married or have children. It was hard job and not well paid. They worked long hours and earned $1 an hour.

In the 1970s, stewardesses were unhappy in their job and airlines had to make some changes. Since the 1970s, “stewardesses” have been called flight attendants. They are well paid and work fewer hours than in the past.

    D. Ellen has an unhappy childhood that changed her completely

  • 26、   It’s common for a child to lose his or her baby tooth during the growth. What do children do when they lose baby teeth? People around the world do it differently.

A custom in the US, England, Canada, Australia and some other English-speaking countries is that children put their baby tooth under their pillow (枕头) before going to bed. They believe the tooth fairy(牙仙子) comes during the night and leave a coin in exchange for their tooth. Of course, we know that the money is not from the tooth fairy. Their parents do it instead.

In some European countries it is a common practice to bury the baby tooth in the earth. The tooth might be buried in the garden or in the surrounding field. However, since most of the people now find themselves living in towns or cities, they begin placing the teeth in small flowerpots. It’s done so that the permanent(永久的) tooth will grow in its place.

Putting a tooth under a pillow sounds sweet, and putting a tooth under the ground or in a flowerpot sounds safe, but what about throwing those teeth around? In some Asian countries, that’s just what people do. Children throw a lower tooth up onto the roof and an upper one is thrown down on the ground, or hidden under the bed. It is done so that the new upper tooth grows downwards, while the new lower tooth upwards.

Some countries even have more interesting traditions. In Nigeria, if you’re a boy, you hold your tooth and eight stones in your fist(拳头). Girls hold six stones and their tooth in their fist. The children then close their eyes and state their names. They then say, “Oh, I want my tooth back!” Next, they throw everything in their fist up in the air and run away as fast as they can. In Mongolia, the baby tooth is given to a young dog. There, the dog is respected and considered to be able to protect people. If the dog likes the baby tooth and eats it, it’s said that a strong tooth will grow again

1How many different traditions about the baby tooth are mentioned in the passage?

    A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven.

2Why do people in Asia throw their baby teeth around in different ways?

    A. Because it means nothing but it is only a tradition.

    B. Because they think that the teeth are useless to them.

    C. Because they have no other places to store these teeth.

    D. Because they expect their new teeth to grow in a correct way

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. A kid in UK hides his baby tooth under a pillow to get some money.

    B. People in Europe usually bury their baby teeth in different places.

    C. In Nigeria, boys and girls like games with their baby teeth

    D. In Mongolia, people think dogs can help them to have strong teeth to grow.

4What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

    A. There are different traditions to do with the baby tooth in the world

    B. The baby tooth means something different to people in different countries.

    C. When children lose baby teeth, they like to do some different things with them.

    D. Most children in the world hope to have stronger teeth when they lose baby teeth.

  • 27、阅读下面四篇材料,然后从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

I don’t have too many memories of my father because he was so sick in the last years of his life. But there are some that I am often reminded of and which may have developed my love of science.

When I was small I was somewhat afraid of lightning and thunder(雷). My father explained it. The explanation was in words that a child could understand but was basically correct. I gained a better understanding and learnt something from him.

What he said was that there was electricity in the clouds and it traveled to the ground like a spark(火花). When it traveled through the air it made the air so hot that it burned. Then there was nothing where the air had been and the air all around rushed in to fill the space. Saying this he clapped his hands together very loudly pretending to be the air rushing in and said that makes the thunder. When I hear thunder I can still hear that clap clearly.

He also explained why a cloudy winter night was warmer than a clear one. When there were clouds they were like blankets(毛毯) which kept the earth and us warm. He said that if there were no clouds we had no blankets and were exposed to the universe. Our warmth was going to heat the whole universe. Even today I still feel on the edge of space on a very clear night.

I am sure there were many other lessons that I took but no longer remember most of them now. What I did learn in general was that there were explanations and that the more I understood them the more comfortable the world was to live in. I was not taught that there were mysteries but that there was understanding if you looked for it. This may be why I have always taken an interest in science.

【1】 The writer’s father explained that there was thunder because   and made it.

    A. his hands clapped loudly

    B. rushing air filled the space

    C. electricity traveled through the air

    D. thick clouds knocked into each other

    【2】The underlined word“exposed”in paragraph 4 means .

    A. close B. cold C. covered D. open

【3】What did the writer think of his father’s explanation according to the passage?

    A. Silly and strange

    B. Scientific and difficult

    C. Simple but scary

    D. Vivid and understandable

【4】We can know from the passage that .

    A. the writer is smart enough to learn much

    B. the writer has a good memory about learning

    C. the writer has a good understanding of things in life

    D. the writer was taught there were many secret things in the world
