24、 Our lives have become more digital (数字的) in the modern world. We can study, find information and communicate with friends through computers and phones. However, spending a lot of time working, reading, texting and gaming through digital devices (设备) is bad for our eyes.
According to the American Optometric Association, 70 to 75 percent of computer workers have eye problems.
Digital eyestrain (眼睛疲劳) is one of the most common problems. People with digital eyestrain may get headaches, dry and red eyes, eye pain and other problems.
These problems have started to increase among children. "Children get cellphones at younger ages and are using them very often during the day," Sarah Hinkley, spokeswoman (女发言人) for the American Optometric Association, told USA Today.
The good news is that there are many things you can do to reduce digital eyestrain. When using a computer, first sit in your chair and reach out your arm. Your hand should rest comfortably on the screen, as if you're high-fiving the screen. Increase text size until your eyes feel comfortable.
When you are using a mobile phone, keep it at least 30 cm from your eyes and just below eye level. Try not to use it under sunlight.
Remember to take a 20-20-20 break: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away.

25、 I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join in my next project—30 minutes of exercise and healthy eating. Promise to help you “LOSE WEIGHT!”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it got. His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
I tried to remember what life was like before Facebook. Surfing the internet was an occasional (偶尔的) activity, and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity (简单) of those days and set a healthier example for my son, I closed my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered playing the piano. I started taking yoga classes.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present at the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how Facebook allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I have a look at it every day, but no longer with the need to post ideas and photos from time to time.
It is not an addiction (瘾) any more.

26、 One day, I happened to meet an Englishman in the street and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be very surprised, gently shaking his head and saying, “You don't say!” I was puzzled (困惑的), and I thought, “Perhaps this is not a right thing to talk about.” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? Have you ever been there?”
“Certainly! Everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave here without seeing it. The Great Wall is wonderful.” “Yes, it is one of the wonders in the world. And people of many countries have come to visit it.” As I went on telling him more about it, he stopped me again, “You don't say!”
I couldn't help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?”
“Well, I didn't ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised.
“Didn't you say ‘You don't say!’?” I asked.

27、Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics(特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame(声誉).
A hero has powers(力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.
