27、I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory.
Our flight left the Orlando Airport one Friday morning. But immediately upon take-off, it was clear that something was wrong. The aircraft was bumping(颠簸) up and down. All the experienced travellers, including me, looked around with knowing smiles. If you fly much, you see these things and learn to act calmly about them. However, we did not remain calm for long.
Minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling quickly. The pilot soon made a serious announcement. “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “Our indicators show that the control system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando Airport. The flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough touchdown.” In other words, we were about to crash. Many travellers looked visibly frightened now. No one faces death without fear, I thought.
Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman’s voice, speaking in an absolutely normal conversational tone. I had to find the source of this voice. All around, people cried. Many screamed. Finally, I saw her. In this chaos, a mother was talking to her child. The woman, in her mid-30s, was staring full into the face of her daughter, who looked to be four years old. The child listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother’s words. The mother’s eye held the child so fixed that she seemed untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her.
Finally, I leaned over and by some miracle could hear this soft sure voice with the tone of comfort. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. Remember, no matter what happens, I love you always.” Fortunately, our landing gear held at last and our touchdown was not a tragedy.
However, the voice I heard that day never faded. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like.

29、Rainy days don’t have to get you down, a happiness expert has claimed.
Paul Dolan, Professor of Behavioral Science at the London School of Economics, said that people only feel miserable in bad weather because they think about it too much. Studies have shown that people who live in warm, sunny climates are no happier than those in chilly, wet climates, he says.
So the British talking about the weather may be making us gloomier(沮丧的) than the weather itself.
He said: “A study was done that measured the happiness levels of people in California compared to the North West.
“They expected that people in California would be happier because it is more sunny, but they found that levels of happiness were exactly the same.
“If it is sunny every day you get used to it and the sunshine doesn’t make you any happier.
“Most of the time the weather doesn’t affect our well-being at all. But when we think about it, and think that it does, that’s when we get miserable.”
In his new book, Happiness By Design, Dolan argues that we can think ourselves happy by taking our attention away from what makes us sad.
“Most of our anxieties come from what might be,” he argues. “If you want to be happier, pay attention to the things that make you feel good.”
He also claimed that a problem shared was not always a problem halved. He claimed that humans are actually very good at being able to get over tragedy and loss.
Professor Dolan also admitted for the first time that he had a stammer(口吃), which had made his early life miserable. He claimed it only got better when he learned not to pay attention to his speech problem.
“Things are never as bad as you imagine them being,” he said.

When I was ten years old, my mother decided she wanted a dog. My sister and I were excited about the idea. We went to the local shelter (收容所) where we discovered a dog who had been hit by a car. His back left leg was badly injured, and he was clearly in terrible pain, dragging it around behind him.
My mother adopted (收养) the dog and took him to the vet (兽医). The vet fixed his leg and said he would be fine. It took him a long time to get well, and he had to be helped up and down the stairs to our second-floor apartment for weeks. The bad leg was always a little shorter than the others, but he got along fine. So, we had a dog.
Now our dog needed a name. My mother couldn’t think of any name except that of a dog on a television show—a smart dog named Kleo. So she named our dog Kleo.
Kleo loved all of us, letting my sister and me put him in dolls’ clothes, cut his hair, and play with him, but my mom was his savior (救星). When she left the house to go shopping, he howled (吠叫) at the top of his voice until she returned. And when she came home, he was beside himself with happiness.
Kleo went with us on vacation each summer, driving from our home in Washington State to our grandparents’ homes in Massachusetts and New York. We never had to worry about Kleo; we just opened the door and he got out, did what was needed and got back in the car.
One day, we stopped at midday for gas and a bathroom break at a station in the middle of nowhere. It had started to rain. Everyone rushed out of the car and took off in several directions. A few minutes later, we were on the road again.
