二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In the globalizing world, you're likely to receive some kind of encouragement to travel, study or work abroad. It may seem like you have a lot going on. As a result, you don't seriously consider these chances. Actually, you should think about them carefully, especially traveling abroad. 1

You'll get out of your comfort zone. At home, you interact with your family members, your neighbors or your good friends. 2 Traveling in a foreign country, with different people, who hold different values, takes all that familiarity and comfort away. It can be scary, but once you figure out you can connect with people despite differences, you become more competent.

3 As you overcome the obstacles(障碍)of figuring out how to use public transit in a foreign country, or asking for simple things in a grocery store, you are building up confidence in adapting in foreign situations. You realize that you can do things despite the obstacles and suddenly the obstacles seem more like welcomed challenges.

You'll develop cultural sensitivity. 4 This is because it can help us understand international issues and avoid conflicts. Therefore, it's important to look for underlying values that may explain a certain behavior to practise cultural sensitivity. When you travel abroad, you have the chances to observe different cultural values and traditions, which helps you to develop cultural sensitivity.

You'll adapt to globalization. With the Internet and social media, we are globalizing quickly. It is likely that you get a job that has you travel for business or make conference calls with international business partners. 5 Use the confidence and cultural sensitivity that traveling helps you develop to succeed.

    A.You'll become more confident.

    B.You'll become sensitive to challenges.

C.Here are some tips on traveling abroad.

D.You are comfortable in these familiar relationships.

E.Being culturally sensitive is vital in our globalizing world.

F.And there are enough reasons why you should choose to travel abroad.

G.In the business world, the experiences of traveling abroad can give you a competitive edge.

  • 22、   Some people may think that students who study abroad have more time for relaxation and less homework. But as a matter of fact, Grade 12 students in Canada are just as busy and pressured as students in China. In Canada, students have to pay equal attention to all the tests and assignments, as every little evaluation will directly affect their final grades.

To ease some of the stress from the important courses, like mathematics and English, students will often choose one or two fun courses in the last year of high school. Those classes can give students a fairly excellent final grade.

Take me as an example-the classes I am attending this semester include advanced functions, graphic design and history. All of them are really important to me, which means I have to pay more attention to them.

In order to get enough elective credits to grade, I chose a relatively easy course, nutrition and health. This course is aimed at helping students develop a healthy lifestyle and diet. The biggest highlight of this course is that students can experience cooking and baking, which I believe is the reason why there 're a large number of students on the waiting list Usually, there are one or two food labs every month. Teachers always let students decide what they want to cook or bake. Students are divided into four groups with six people, and teachers are given the recipe beforehand.

After attending this class for more than three months, I believe it's not as easy as others think it is because it's an interdisciplinary(跨学科) course that requires  basic knowledge of science, humanity and even culinary.

Despite these kinds of courses not being as demanding as others, we can still learn a lot from them. Some people might think they're “mark-boosting(促进分数的)” courses that don't need to be taken seriously. But I consider them to be a unique way to ease the tension or other schoolwork.

1Why do Grade 12 students in Canada take fun elective courses?

A.To pass the free time. B.To put theory into practice.

C.To adopt a healthy lifestyle. D.To get relief from schoolwork.

2It can be learned from paragraph 4 that Canadian elective classes are ____.

A.easy but boring B.diverse but stressful

C.practical and beneficial D.interesting and inspiring

3Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.School Life in Canada B.Canada's Elective Classes

C.Educational System in Canada D.Tips for Choosing Elective Classes

  • 23、   When my son Connor started walking, we knew something was wrong. He was 17 months old, and he walked on his tiptoes. Soon Connor's muscles began to lose strength. At three he showed signs of upper-body weakness, by five he couldn't hold his head upright, and by the first grade, he would need a wheelchair. As the day passed, he tired and couldn't hold a pencil to write. Within two years, he would be too tired to feed himself dinner. Everyone was puzzled. Physically, his body was twisted, but he was mentally perfect. We ran tests after tests, but no definite answer.

Finally, in 2004, we consulted Dr. Shawn, a geneticist, who said that Connor's symptoms had signs of dystonia(肌张力障碍) a very rare genetic disorder, and a possible cure was L-dopa. Though there was possible side effects of the treatment, when Connor’s condition worsened, I had little choice.

Dr. Jacobs, a neurologist(神经学家), gave Connor the first dose (一次剂量的药) on June 21, 2007, when he was nine years old. The next morning, when I went in to wake him up, I found him kneeling on his bed he hadn't done that since he was learning to walk. He shouted, “Look at me, Mom!” Connor was excited.

Over the next few days, Connor kept getting stronger. He held his upper body much straighter after the first week. A few weeks later, he “furniture-walked,” supporting himself on chairs and couches. He later walked holding both of my hands, then just one hand. And on August 13, he walked across my mother’s living room by himself.

I could now believe the unbelievable: The medicine was working. The child who had been too weak to feed himself dinner was walking. Since then, every year on June 21, we celebrate Dopa Day with a cake and presents, for it’s Connor’s second “birthday,” and it marks the best day of my life.

    1What’s wrong with Connor?

A.The doctor found he couldn’t walk.

B.Something was wrong when he was born.

C.Neither his mind nor his body was normal.

D.His mind was fine but his body was abnormal.

2Which of the following statements is true?

    A.The L-dopa dose proved effective.

B.The L-dopa treatment was proved safe.

C.There were other cures for Connor's illness.

D.Nobody knew what kind of disease Connor had had.

3What’s special about the day of June 21?

    A.It was Connor’s birthday.

B.It was the day when Connor started walking.

C.It was the day when Connor recovered completely.

D.It was the day when Connor got his first treatment of L-dopa.

  • 24、Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

    King's Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend tees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.

    The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

    Byron's Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
