21、 Almost everyone labels me an optimist. But even optimists can temporarily lose hope. This was the case for me on a particularly cold and gloomy January day. I felt depressed by the painful challenges I was dealing with in my personal life. Marriage, health, and financial struggles had joined forces to create a tornado of emotion that threatened to crush my spirit. I felt angry. The weather seemed to reflect my mood — the gray sky blocked even a single ray of sunlight.
About midway through the day, I left work to get some lunch. Still feeling negative, I noticed that the sun had come out for a brief moment. I began to think about my negative attitude and remind myself that I was responsible for choosing my state of mind. Even as I consciously reminded myself of this truth, I felt incapable of making the shift.
As I stopped at a red light, I looked at the car directly in front of mine. The personalized license plate caught my eye — it read “Sunout”. This brought an immediate smile to my face. It felt like a reminder that the sun was shining after all. But then my eyes moved to the car that was perfectly parallel to the Sunout vehicle. The license plate on that car read “Complainer”. This brought more than a smile to my face as I laughed out loudly! Seeing the two very opposite license plates at that exact moment in time, I felt my spirits and mood lift as I made the conscious decision to choose a positive attitude.
I shared my story with several co-workers who responded with warm laughter. I learned that day that when we are feeling too discouraged to bring ourselves out of a state of negativity, relief is just near!

23、 When you are choosing a major in the future, will you place a higher value on its future career or on its personal interest to you? Zhong Fangrong, a left-behind girl from Hunan province who scored 676 points in total on this year's college entrance exam, preferred the latter as she applied to study archaeology at Peking University.
However, there was a heated debate concerning whether she had made a wise decision. Some netizens argued that she wouldn't have a promising future unless she chose a more popular major—for instance, finance, engineering, business, etc. —instead of archaeology. What's more, considering the financial burden on her family, she had better think twice before making her final decision.
The girl later responded that she had been inspired to pursue archeology by Fan Jinshi, president of Dunhuang Academy, and that she had developed a passion for history and cultural relics. She also added that she cared little about fame and fortune.
Zhong has increased my confidence because of her attitude towards life. Firstly, she knows clearly what she is really interested in and is determined to devote herself to it. Secondly, Zhong has been able to stick to her pursuit despite the criticism from society.
Zhong's pursuit reminds me of a lady who walks on a country road and lives in poetry—Li Ziqi. They both try their best to be who they want to be, which is rare and admirable nowadays.
Just ask yourself: Do you have the courage not to follow the pattern that the majority of people repeat? Actually, applying for an unpopular major may help you to avoid fierce competition. And the pursuit of a popular major is no guarantee for a brilliant future.
Following the example of Zhong, I will be more willing to follow my dreams in the years to come.
【1】What made Zhong decide to major in archaeology?
A.Her courage to take an adventure. B.Her optimistic attitude towards life.
C.Her stubborn belief in popular majors. D.Her love for history and cultural relics.
【2】Some netizens opposed Zhong's choice because they thought
A.she preferred finance to archaeology B.she wouldn't have a promising future
C.she placed value on her future career D.she cared much about fame and fortune
【3】What inspires the author to follow his or her dream in the future?
A.Li Ziqi's living in poetry. B.Netizens' heated argument.
C.Fan Jinshi's encouragement. D.Zhong's sticking to her pursuit.
【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.You Can Be Who You Want To Be B.Archaeology Is Becoming Popular
C.A Left-behind Girl Scored 676 Points D.A Heated Debate Arose Among Netizens
24、A recent story on TikTok showed how two neighbors found companionship during the lockdown because of the pandemic (疫情), thanks to a shared love of the piano.
The story started when Giorgio Lo Porto heard his neighbor playing the piano through their dividing wall. Lo Porto, an Italian living in London, decided to reach out to his neighbor and left a note asking him or her to play My Heart Will Go On. The mystery neighbor agreed, leading Lo Porto to send another note suggesting they play a duet (二重奏) together from the comfort of their own homes. The mystery neighbor started playing the piano at 2:00 pm, and when he stopped after finishing a part of a song, Lo Porto continued. Over time the duets between the two complete strangers became a regular weekend appointment.
Weeks later, the pair finally met and it was better than expected. The mystery pianist happened to be a 78-year-old Polish man named Emil, who was living in temporary accommodation until his house was sold. He lost his wife in December due to COVID-19 and all he had left was the piano. And the reason why he played at 2: 00 pm every weekend was that he and his wife used to do that.
The pair finished a final duet together — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata — before Emil moved out at the end of February.
While this is heartwarming in itself, the story has a heartbreaking ending: On March 14, Lo Porto shared that his old neighbor had passed away in his sleep. He said, “Now he is reunited with his wife.”
While saying goodbye to Emil, Lo Porto wrote, “Dear Emil, I knew very little about you, but you changed my life. You gave me back my passion, and we shared that with the world. You’ll be in my heart. I’ll keep playing, thinking of how powerful music can be. You said I was your light, but you’ve been mine, too. Bye, Emil.”
【1】What happened after Lo Porto left the second note for Emil?
A.They composed a new song based on a classic.
B.They reached out to neighbors to cheer them up.
C.They shared their playing skills with TikTokers.
D.They performed music together through the wall.
【2】Why did Emil play the piano at a special time?
A.To upload his updates.
B.To remember his wife.
C.To advertise his house.
D.To comfort strangers.
【3】What is the sad part of the story in the author’s opinion?
A.Emil's passing away.
B.Lo Porto’s departure.
C.The pair’s final performance.
D.The unfamiliarity between the pair.
【4】What does Lo Porto mainly convey at last?
A.He admired Emil’s ambition.
B.It is easy to say goodbye.
C.Emil positively influenced him.
D.Music is a universal language.
