  • 21、To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you’re being unsociable will have to cat their wards. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic (善解人意) people.

The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.

For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books, TV shows, and plays. They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behavior towards others, whether they understood and respected others’ points of view, and whether they actively helped other people.

Drawing on these responses sheet, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that those who read more showed greater positive social behavior and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn’t show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behavior.

They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behavior. Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others’ points of view, while comedy fans were particularly, able to relate to others the most.

The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from other people’s points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn’t conclude if the effects are causal — does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction? Even so, picking up a book can’t hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.

【1】How did the researchers conduct the research?

    A.By making questionnaire surveys.

    B.By comparing experiment statistics.

    C.By observing participants’ behaviors.

D.By referring to previous study reports.

【2】What does the underlined word “mind-boggling” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Embarrassing.

    B.Satisfying.

    C.Amazing.

    D.Disappointing.

【3】What can improve people’s empathetic abilities the most according to the study?

    A.Reading fiction and comedy.

    B.Enjoying romance and drama.

    C.Taking part in social activities.

    D.Watching plays on social media.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.All people support the research result.

B.Further study is needed on this subject.

C.The nicer and kinder people like reading.

D.Reading can help people make more friends.

  • 22、   The ruins of a Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR. This lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna, but shows that these famous areas are a small part of this lost urban network.

Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve site, more than 60,000 human-made features — homes, canals, highways, and more — have been identified in aerial (从飞机上的)images collected by some international researchers headed by the PAGUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya Empire.

These ancient peoples obviously created these imaginative cultures based on their known relics (遗迹), but the new research has suggested that the size of this lost society is far beyond what experts imagined. The findings will be explored in a one-hour documentary called “Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings”, to be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.

This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey lands in 3D by bouncing pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological(考古的)sites, as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has made many discoveries become a reality in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did. The final goal is to survey Guatemala’s lowlands with it.

“There are entire cities we didn't know about now showing up in the survey data,” Francisco Estrada-Belli, one of the lead archeologists on the project, said in Nat Geo's coming documentary. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities about the mysterious people who built this urban network there that we don’t know about, and we will push back the frontiers with the technology,” he added.

1What does the underlined word "Those" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Jungles. B.Human-made features.

    C.Researchers. D.Aerial images.

2What does the author want to convey in paragraph 4?

A.The working principle of LiDAR sensors.

B.The process of researching Maya civilization.

    C.Great importance of Guatemalans lowlands.

D.LiDAR’s contribution to discovering the relics.

3Which words can best describe the lost Maya city?

    A.Small and hidden. B.Famous and high-tech.

C.Vast and complex. D.Fully-explored and imaginative.

4What will the archeologists do next?

A.Continue to explore the unknown. B.Upgrade the LiDAR technology.

C.Study the documentary carefully. D.Build a massive urban network,

  • 23、   We all know a picky eater (挑食者) or two, or maybe you're the picky eater, avoiding food adventures at all costs, because you're convinced you'll hate whatever new and bad-looking food is put on your plate. But why is it that some people are picky eaters while others are willing to try pretty much anything that can be eaten?

There's no single explanation for the picky eating habit. Picky eaters are typically unwilling to try new foods, which can be the result of your DNA and the way you are treated and educated when you are young. Marcia Pelchat, Ph.D., a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia who specializes in food preferences in humans, tells China Daily, “A group in Finland looked at what we call food neophobia, which literally means 'fear of the new', and they found that there is some genetic basis for this.”

“Also, if you have parents who don't really like to try anything new, you will also be exposed to fewer new foods,” Pelchat says. The opposite is also true: Those who try new foods and have positive experiences are then more likely to try unfamiliar foods in the future.

People who are less adventurous may be more hesitant to try new foods. Trying anything new, food included, requires you to step outside of your comfort zone. If you're not very adventurous, you may have a tough time with this. People who seek new adventures or thrills might be more likely to experiment with food. “There is a thrill-seeking personality trait,” Pelchat says. “It's been shown, especially with spicy food, that there is some connection between trying new foods and thrill seeking,” she explains.

Most adult picky eaters start as child picky eaters. “It's normal for children to go through a picky stage when they're toddlers, maybe two or three years old, and that makes sense evolutionarily,” Pelchat says. But as we get older, if we continue to avoid new foods, pickiness can persist.

【1】What do we know about people with food neophobia?

A.They eat only a few kinds of food.

B.They avoid new or unfamiliar foods.

C.They are addicted to some kind of food.

D.They have preference for vegetable food.

【2】What does Pelchat mainly tell us in Paragraph 3?

A.Food neophobia can be influenced by surroundings.

B.Those who try new foods have a positive life attitude.

C.Parents should set a good example for their children.

D.Food neophobia is linked to poorer dietary quality.

【3】What would be a picky eater like?

    A.Less optimistic.

    B.Less creative.

    C.Less independent.

    D.Less adventurous.

【4】Which of the following shows the best structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 24、   Still seeking a destination for your holiday? We want to inform you of four best places that are probably a mere walk away from your home.

    Highlands

This Scottish destination, only accessible on foot or by boat, is Britain’s last wilderness. Over a week, you’ll hike into the Black Hills, cross the peninsula north to south and set sail for hikes on Skye, Rum and Eigg. Finish each day at a beach-side lodge (小屋), with dinner at the award-winning restaurant next door.

    Snowdonia

The Snowdonia Way, the only low-level long-distance route, was only created in 2017, and remains unnoticed on the ground. Join the new guided walking trip and you won’t need to concentrate on directions, just the fine views as you pass falls, forests, riversides and Roman roads.

    Hadrian’s Wall

Walking along Hadrian’s Wall is like travelling back in time—and even more so if you do it in expert company. Andante’s hike along the ancient barrier is accompanied by a historian every step of the way, who will point out every Roman road, fort, milecastle and inscription, and tell you all about Hadrian’s tactics and Roman daily life.

    Dorest

The Isle of Purbeck is ideal for families: the walking is relatively gentle; the beaches are glorious; the range of other attractions varied; and the buses handy, if little legs get tired. Over a few days, mix rambling the coast and hills (routes are around five or six miles) with steam train rides and sea swims, playing knights at ruined Corfe Castle and fossil-hunting at Kimmeridge Bay.

【1】What can we know about Highlands?

    A.It is very modern.

    B.It is a guided trip.

C.It can be reached by bus.

    D.It provides quality dinner.

【2】Which of the following is the best choice for families?

    A.Snowdonia.

    B.Dorset.

    C.Hadrian’s Wall.

    D.Highlands.

【3】What do the four travel routes have in common?

    A.They are all walking routes.

    B.They are all high-level routes.

    C.Their destinations are the same.

D.They are helpful to learn about history.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A Christmas Goose Kept Them Warm

This late in December, my younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on an important mission: Go to Uncle Tommie’s place and get a goose. The hike over Little Mountain and back to get there would be worth it. Uncle Tommie raised the best geese around, and he’d offered to give us one for Christmas dinner.

Dark clouds were gathering in the sky above and a cold wind came in from the north. The snow would be falling soon enough. Uncle Tommie met us at the door with a worried expression. “I’m not rushing you boys off, ” he said, “but the way the wind is picking up, you better get the goose and head for home. ”

I didn’t argue. Having scooped(迅速抱住)up a goose in the yard and held him tightly under my arm, I said a quick thank you and goodbye. Buddy and I had what we came for: the best Christmas dinner ever. A light snow started as we began climbing up Little Mountain. We didn’t talk for a while. The snow came down harder and the wind seemed to blow straight through my coat. I stroked(轻抚)the goose’s head and said , “I wish we had feathers to keep us warm like you, or heavier coats.”

The goose hid his head closer to his feathered body. By the time we reached the top of the mountain, both Buddy Earl and I were in horror. We could barely see through the snow spinning (旋转)around us. Thunder crashed and flashes of lightning made the trees appear as giant monsters reaching out with fingers.

“Doug, I'm freezing,” Buddy Earl said. “I think we should go back.” But we were closer to home than to Uncle Tommie’s house. We had to push on. I was so cold, my legs getting so stiff, I honestly wondered if we would make it.

I grasped Uncle Tommie’ s goose closer to my chest. That bird was the only thing warm about me.
