二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A few days after dropping off her daughter at college, Andrea got a phone call. Her daughter was ill. Andrea drove there immediately, located a doctor in town, booked a room at the university hotel and put her daughter to bed to recover. The next morning, Andrea went to her daughter's classes, taking notes on her behalf. It was important that her daughter headed into the first semester of college without missing a beat: A future dental career required an extremely good undergraduate academic record of four years.

At the same time, another parent faced a different type of problem. Alexis had handpicked her daughter's new university specifically and aimed to give her daughter an ideal social experience at college. But when she got there, she didn't seem to hit her stride. Alexis blamed it on a working-class roommate who didn't ever want to go out to meet people-and told her daughter, in no uncertain terms, to change roommates.

Both Andrea and Alexis are examples of 'helicopter parents', defined by their hovering and readiness with supplies, assistance and guidance. Their interventions were costly-requiring time, financial reserves, social understanding and knowledge of higher education-though they had different purposes.

Why does educational and professional success today seem to require financial and emotional parental support? In large part, it reflects the shifting relationship between families and the university in America in the past century. Slowly after WWI and rapidly after WWII, many public universities were in fact free, as the government offered universities the resources to help families battle economic depression and poverty. However, in the 1980s, the government shifted financial aid largely from grants to loans. Soon, universities entered a period of heavy and expensive administrative growth as they faced new and intensive pressures. Without the support of the state, families eventually came to absorb many of these costs.

Universities now rely, in part, on parents, particularly those with money, time, and connections to meet their basic needs. However, paying parents bring more than funds alone. They often help promote the university; conduct admissions interviews; interface with donating alumni; assist with their own students’ emotional, cognitive and physical needs and help place graduates(both related and not) in valuable internships and jobs.

But the new family-university partnership exacts a toll. Parents are pushed to extend major parenting responsibilities into doing heavy financial lifting for their children who are supposed to be building their own financial security. There is also some truth to the notion that the helicoptered children are slow to adapt to adulthood, make decisions about their careers, and manage friendships without calling on their parents for help.

1What does the underlined sentence 'she didn't seem to hit her stride' in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Alexis' daughter's social competence wasn't promoted.

B.Alexis' daughter found she herself had financial difficulties.

C.Alexis' daughter disagreed with Alexis about her working-class roommate.

D.Alexis' daughter found university life was different from what she had expected.

2What's the author' attitude towards 'helicopter parents'?

    A.Critical. B.Cautious. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.

    3What's this passage mainly about?

A.Troubles faced by universities in America.

B.The partnership between colleges and ''helicopter parents'.

C.The troubled relationship between parents and their children.

D.The fierce competition among the career-minded generation.

  • 22、   About six years ago I began my job as an IT consultant. I had always been quite good with computers. It was a great move for me, as I quickly learned a ton. Every day was fun. It was one of the best and most challenging jobs I’ve ever had.

Flash-forward a few years and things started to taper. I wasn’t learning as much as before. I felt a desire to try something different, to strike out on my own. I couldn’t get up the courage to make any moves. The job paid very well; I had a lot of freedom, and great benefits. I had grown comfortable and accustomed to an easy life.

Last year things came to a head, I was having a particularly stressful month, overloaded with work that was neither challenging nor interesting. I had enough. I reached out to my boss and let him know that I was done. We had a meeting about my decision. He didn’t want to lose me. He addressed my concerns and we agreed that I could change my job and begin working on some new internal organizational systems. I decided to give this new role a chance.

Now, a year after my role change, not much is different. Senior staff did not adopt the new systems I built. The work is still uninspiring and unchallenging. I’m comfortable, but comfort to me has become terrible. Change can be very difficult for some and after spending time trying to carry out new solutions, I’ve realized that you simply can’t change other people if they don’t want it.

I’ve again quit my job. It’s both liberating and frightening. I need a greater challenge. I’ve learned a lot

from my quitting experience. Here are some signs that it might be time to quit your job.

1What does the underlined word “taper” mean in the passage?

    A.Increase. B.Decline.

    C.Develop. D.Repeat.

2How did the author feel when considering getting a move?

    A.Decisive. B.Cautious.

    C.Contradictory. D.Careless.

    3Why was the author upset?

A.His leader couldn’t make sense of him.

B.He was unsatisfied with his salary.

C.He thought his job was boring.

D.His boss didn’t allow him to leave.

4What will be continued with the passage?

A.Indications that you should give up a job.

B.Suggestions on how to live comfortably.

C.Instructive stories about some other people.

D.Great challenges you should face and accept.

  • 23、(题文)After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.

Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.

The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations — major food sources (来源) for the wolf — grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.

As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.

The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolvers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

What is the text mainly about?

    A. Wildlife research in the United States.

    B. Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.

    C. The conflict between farmers and gray wolves.

    D. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.

  • 24、   Fancy your own satellite? Arizona State University is working towards making this a reality with its SunCube FemtoSat project. Smaller than a standard CubeSat, the low-cast student-designed spacecraft is aimed at providing greater access to space for scientists and hobbyists alike.

Assistant professor Jekan Thanga and a team of students have been developing the SunCube FemtoSat for the past two years. The small 3×3×3cm cube weighs in at just 35g and a longer (3×3×9cm, 100g) model has also been designed, which includes storage space.

Each SunCube FemtoSat has its own communication, data collection and propulsion (推进) systems and is powered by solar panels. It is made of off-the-shelf parts that are available in shops, and the energy-efficient solar panels are cut from scrap (碎片), which makes it save energy, sold at a discount by manufacturers. “With a spacecraft of this size, any university can do it,” says Thanga. “That’s part of our major goal—space discovery for everybody.”

The team says that while launching your own satellite would usually cost between US $ 60,000-70,000 per kilo, it would only cost $ 1,000 to send a SunCube FemtoSat to the International Space Station, and $ 3,000 to send it into low earth orbit. Leaving the earth’s gravity would cost an estimated $ 27,000.

The FemtoSat would be packed with a “jack in the box” style system that matches standard CubeSat sizes (around 10 cubic cm), simplifying the process of getting the tiny satellite into orbit. NASA has sent 30 CubeSats into space over the last years, with another 50 awaiting launch.

Thanga and his staff view the FemtoSat as a starting point for scientists and students, and even hope the device could be bought on the website like Amazon one day. Thanga imagines developing four main applications for the device, including hands-on testing experiences for students, and artificial gravity experiments. In addition, groups of SunCube FemtoSats could eventually be able to do the job of larger spacecraft at a vastly discounted cost.

1What is the major goal of the SunCube FemtoSat project?

A.To act on teaching in outer space. B.To provide access to spacecraft design.

C.To help carry out a classroom experiment. D.To help average individuals explore space.

2What is special about SunCube FemtoSats?

A.They are of the same size. B.They are energy-efficient.

C.They are mainly designed for lab use. D.They are mainly used to collect information.

3What does Thanga expect of SunCube FemtoSats?

A.They’ll be available online. B.They’ll be provided for free.

C.They’ll match the size of CubeSats. D.They’ll be sent into space with CubeSats.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.FemtoSats Will Rule Space B.Your Own Satellite Is Coming

C.Going into Space Has Been Afforable D.You can Design Your Own Spacecraft
