26、 School days are supposed to be the best days of your life and part of that experience usually involves some unforgettable physical activities. I asked some people to give me their memories of what happened to them on the sports field and beyond, and this is what they told me.
Cup winners
When I was about ten, the football team from our year unexplainably made it to the cup final of the local schools’ league. I say unexplainably because I only remember us losing nearly every match we played. Anyway, in the final I set up the winning goal, a brilliant cross to my mate David who headed the ball in just before the final whistle. I still have a photograph of the team holding the cup.
Forest hike
I remember having to lead a group of eight boys on a school expedition for the best part of two days when I was a teenager. Even though we got lost at one point, I managed to keep them all together and get them from one end of a large forest to the other and back by sheer(纯粹的) force of will. I was chosen to be the leader, I think, because I was the only one who knew how to read a map!
When we arrived back at the campsite, we found out that all the other groups had cheated and hitched(搭便车) most of the way instead… I felt a bit stupid, but also rather proud of myself at the same time for having done it properly.
Learning to swim, learning to drown
I learned to swim comparatively late, I suppose. I was maybe nine years old but my brother had a painful experience which nearly put him off for life. We lived in the USA for a while and had access to a university pool where the coaches had trained the American Olympic team. In those days, though, their idea of teaching kids how to swim was to tie a can to their ankles with a bit of string, throw them in the deep end and shout “Swim!”. I am surprised my brother survived at all. He could only have been about six at the time.

28、In a landmark study, published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers placed the genetically modified (转基因的) mosquitoes in a special laboratory that has similar conditions to sub-Saharan Africa, where mosquitoes spread malaria, a deadly disease.
The male mosquitoes were engineered with a sequence of DNA known as a “gene drive” that can rapidly transmit a mutation (突变) that wipes out populations of the insects. The goal is to create a powerful new tool to fight malaria.
Years of additional research will be needed to prove the approach works and the mosquitoes would be safe to release into the wild. The project would also require approval and agreement by local residents in areas where those mosquitoes live, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.
The modification consisted of a mutation in a gene known as “doublesex”, which female mosquitoes need for normal development. The mutation deforms the mouths of mosquitoes, making them unable to bite and spread the disease. It also deforms their reproductive organs, making them unable to lay eggs.
“The mutation is combined with a gene drive, a selfish type of genetic element that spreads itself in the mosquito population,” said Tony Nolan of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, who helped develop and test the mosquitoes.
Because of fears of disturbing the delicate balance of ecosystems, the researchers have taken extraordinary steps to prevent the insects from escaping. The scientists first tested the mosquitoes in a high-security basement lab in London, where the mosquitoes destroyed unmodified mosquitoes in small cages.
To try to test the mosquitoes safely under more natural conditions, the researchers built a special high-security lab in Italy, which has similar environment to the natural environment in sub-Saharan Africa. It is also designed to keep their gene-drive mosquitoes from escaping. For example, anyone entering the most secure part of the lab had to pass through a special room that would prevent any mosquitoes from exiting. The lab was purposefully located far from Africa in case, somehow, any mosquitoes managed to get out.
【1】What’s the purpose of the research?
A.Treat mosquito bites.
B.Fight a deadly disease.
C.Enlarge populations of insects.
D.Create a new sequence of DNA.
【2】What will happen to the genetically modified mosquitoes?
A.They will lay more eggs.
B.They will be unable to bite.
C.They will be made into medicine.
D.They will be killed after the research.
【3】What are the researchers concerned about?
A.Affecting the balance of the ecosystem.
B.The safety of the subject insects in the lab.
C.Lacking natural conditions to do experiments.
D.The spread of gene drive among mosquito populations.
【4】What can be inferred about the researchers’ experiment?
A.It has already achieved desired results.
B.Some mosquitoes escaped from the lab.
C.Research work had to be stopped due to safety concerns.
D.The mosquitoes failed to adapt to the conditions in the lab.
29、 Scientist in Colombia have trained a team of rats to help remove landmines from the countryside. Landmines are small bombs hidden in the ground and designed to explode when someone steps on them.
When trained, the rats can smell special metals in the mines and then signal to their human team. Then why use rats for such an important job?
In the past, dogs have been used to find bombs. Rats have a good sense of smell and can respond to orders, just like dogs do. But rats are much lighter than dogs. They stand less of a chance of setting off the mines, which explode under a certain amount of weight. What’s more, the best rats are cheaper to keep than dogs. It costs about the same amount of money to take care of one dog as it does 70 rats.
The rats have already been used in Tanzania, an African country with many landmines. Luisa Fernanda Mendez and her team in Colombia are training the even lighter Wistar rats. These are the white rats with red eyes that scientists often use in laboratory experiments. 'They even train their babies to perform their jobs, which saves us a lot of time, ' Mendez said.
Colombia has the second-highest rate (比率) of deaths from landmine accidents in the world. Last year, land mines killed 695 people—56 of whom were children. A criminal(犯罪) group called the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, as well as other organizations, have placed the mines. FARC are strongly against Colombia's government. The group has placed mines all around its own bases and in many places in the countryside.
In the past, the Colombian government hired peasants and poor farmers to find mines. Many of them died trying to find the well-hidden bombs.
Colombian police official Erick Guzman hopes the team of rats can come to the rescue. 'These rats will be a great help, ' he said.
【1】How do rats help to find land mines?
A.By their excellent hearing. B.By their sense of smell.
C.By their special sight. D.By their light weight.
【2】What is the advantage of rats over dogs in finding bombs?
A.They are cleverer than dogs. B.They run faster than dogs.
C.They don't make mines explode as easily. D.they have a better sense of smell.
【3】Which of the following is not true?
A.In the past, dogs have been used to find bombs. B.Rats are much lighter than dogs.
C.It costs less money to take care of a rat than a dog. D.Dogs have a better sense of smell than rats.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A new way to clear land mines—specially-trained rats .
B.People in Tanzania are suffering from land mines.
C.Dogs are no longer used to find land mines.
D.Land mines have become a great danger to Colombians.
