  • 26、   Winslow Homer was a famous American painter. Since Art History class in collegeI had always admiredhis works andI was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting “Snap the Whip”. It always hung in my classroom until I retired from teaching.

I thought it truly captured the freedom andfun of childhood. In the paintinga group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on the grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes!

During my last year of teachingthere was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me andwe got to be goodfriends. She had been an art student before taking up education. Her eyes were drawn immediately to this print when she entered my room. So on my last day of teachingafter the students hadleftI took the painting off the wall and walked next door and gave it to her.

She was really surprisedbut very glad to have it. I was delighted that she likedit and all the students she would have would treasure it as much as I had. We found the perfect place for it on one of her walls and hung it together. I was happy that she brought back this wonderful memory for me.

  • 27、   It is a sad truth that any health crisis (危机) will lead to a large outbreak of misinformation.

In the 80s, 90s, and 2000s we saw the spread of dangerous lies about AIDS - from the belief that the HIV virus was created by a government laboratory to the idea that it could be treated with goat’s milk. These claims increased risky behaviour and worsened the crisis.

Now, we are surrounded with unreal news - this time around Covid-19 (新冠肺炎). The Economist in March 2020 found 13% of Americans believed Covid-19 was a trick while 49% believed the virus might be man-made. While you might hope that greater brainpower or education would help us to tell facts from lies, it is easy to find examples of many educated people falling for false information. Kelly Brogan, who has a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has refused clear evidence of the virus’s danger in countries like China and Italy and even questioned the health officials.

Part of the problem arises from the nature of the messages themselves. As BBC Future has described in the past, suppliers of false news can make their message feel “truthy” through a few simple tricks, which discourages us from using our critical thinking skills.

For example, a simple image alongside a statement increases our trust in its accuracy (准确)---even if it is only partly related to the statement. Moreover, even the simple repetition of a statement can increase the “truthiness” by increasing feelings of familiarity.

These tricks have long been known by peddlers (传播者) of misinformation, but today’s social media make the spread more easily. Recent evidence shows that many people share information on the Internet without even thinking about its truthfulness and ignoring the obvious question: is it true?

1How does the author support his ideas in the text?

A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By doing scientific research. D.By explaining statistical data.

2The author mentions Kelly Brogan in paragraph 3 to prove that ________.

A.Covid-19 is not real but may be man-made

B.plenty of false news crowds into people’s daily life

C.even well-educated people may not tell facts from lies

D.countries like China and Italy have suffered greatly these days

3People are most likely to believe the false news when ________.

A.it’s unfamiliar to them B.it’s attached with clear evidences

C.it carries several messages at a time D.it includes pictures and repeated statements

4What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Many people share false information to attract more followers.

B.Fake news peddlers have long tricked people into ignoring truth.

C.Some tricks prevent people from applying critical thinking skills.

D.It’s today’s social media that speed up the spread of misinformation.

  • 28、   My mother was an excellent housekeeper. She had a few surgeries over the years, and before each one she’d have my father move the stove out from the wall so she could clean behind it. It would have been hard for her to relax in the hospital if she knew there were dust balls behind the stove.

The entire house was tidy and organized – there was a place for everything and everything

was in its place. Mom would hang the sheets outside to dry rather than inside the house. And if storm clouds gathered, she would run outside, race down to the sheets, throw them into a bag, and then race back to the house as the rain started, satisfied that a major catastrophe had been avoided. Throughout our entire childhoods, my sisters and I were spoiled with fresh bedding and cookies fresh from the oven.

There’s something beautiful about freshness, like the beginning of a school year, the start of a marriage, the birth of a child, moving to a new place, or starting a new job.

Freshness is like opening a new calendar that isn’t yet filled with neglected tasks. A new year always means a chance at a fresh start. But the question is, how do we choose to make this new start?

Maybe I need to do some housekeeping myself. A good sweeping usually leads to finding some interesting things – an old memory or two and new hobbies that fell by the wayside. Perhaps it’s time to clean out all those drawers filled with junk – the ones holding old tapes that replay the things I regret doing and the things that I wish I had done.

My personality could use some polish (亮光剂) as well – the ability to listen more than I talk. Glass cleaner (玻璃清洁剂) would be a good idea too – something to give me a clearer view of the things that matter and the things that don’t.

Cleaning is rarely my first choice of activity, but I’m ready to go and do what needs to be done. Here’s to a fresh start and a new year.

1What can we learn about the author’s mother according to the article?

A.She prefer rainy days to sunny days.

B.She couldn’t bear anything to be unorganized in her house.

C.She required her daughters to wash their own bedding.

D.She ask her husband to do the housekeeping during her surgeries.

2What does the author think about her childhood?

A.She has forgotten it B.It was painful for her.

C.It was full of happiness. D.She was spoiled by her mother.

3Why does the author decide to do some housekeeping herself?

A.She see it as a chance to improve herself and move on.

B.She wants to help reduce her mother’s burden.

C.She is quite bothered by her messy house.

D.She thinks it’s time to learn some life skills.

4The author wrote this article mainly to ______

A.give advice on how to clean the house.

B.inspire people’s thought and plan for the new year.

C.share the story of her mother’s strength.

D.recall her mother sisters and father.

  • 29、   People say that text messages and e-mails lack emotion compared to phone or face-to-face conversations. But one thing seems to improve it – the emoticon(表情符).

These little symbols – whether it’s a wink(眨眼); -), a smiley : -) or a sad face :-( - always add a little something to whatever you are sending out, making it more expressive than cold words on a screen.

To be sure, emoticons have changed the way that we communicate with each other. But there is more: a new study found that they are even changing how our brains work – we now react to emoticons in the same way as we would to real human faces, reported Live Science.

It’s actually amazing when you start to think about it: what an emoticon consists of is simply three punctuation marks(标点符号) – on their own, they carry no meaning as a pair of eyes, a nose or a mouth, but after they were first put together as symbols for faces in 1982, they began to appear more and more in our written materials.

Owen Churches, a scientist at Flinders University in Australia, wanted to find out what people see in emoticons that make them so popular. So he showed 20 participants images of real faces, a smiley emoticon and a series of meaningless characters while their brain activities were monitored.

Previous studies have already shown that our brains process human faces differently than they do other objects – they analyze the position of the mouth relative to the nose and the eyes to “read” for emotions. As a result, certain parts of our brain, such as the occipital-temporal cortex, are activated(激活).

When Churches compared participants’ brain activities, he was surprised to find that the brain areas that were activated when people looked at smiley emoticons were the same as when they were shown pictures of real faces.

According to Churches, this is a good example of how culture is shaping our brains. “Emoticons are a new form of language that we’re producing,” Churches told ABC Science. “Before 1982 there would be no reason that ‘:-)’ would activate face-sensitive areas of the cortex, but now it does because we’ve learnt that this represents a face.”

Next time you chat with your friends online, try to use emoticons where they are needed. It’ll be almost like you’re smiling or winking at them yourself.

1According to the article, Owen Churches’ research mainly focuses on   .

    A. the influence of emoticons on communication

    B. various messages that emoticons can carry

    C. how the human brain recognizes different emotions

    D. why people like emoticons

2Which of the following statements about emoticons is TRUE according to the article?

    A. Emoticons are more convenient and efficient than text messages and e-mails.

    B. Emoticons have been accepted in written tests.

    C. Emoticons were created out of meaningless characters in the early 1980s.

    D. Emoticons, symbols made up of punctuation marks, make online messages more lively.

3We can infer from the article that   .

    A. the use of emoticons has changed how people recognize real faces

    B. people should try to use emoticons as much as possible

    C. emoticons could possibly develop into a new form of language

    D. human brains are constantly developing

4According to the article, our brain   when we read emoticons.

    A. compares the shapes of the symbols with those of real faces

    B. matches them with different types of real facial expressions

    C. tries to translate the symbols into simple words

    D. first adds meanings and then adds emotions to the symbols

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My family and I go to the Big Island of Hawaii in the United States every year. Each year, we do the same things-spend time at the beaches, surfing and fishing. On this trip, however, my family got tired of this holiday style and wanted to do something different. We learned from a local that there was a hot spring on the island called the Boiling Pots. Without doing any research, we decided to set off on an adventure to that spot.

We drove to the destination, but were surprised to find that the area was closed off by a fence (栅栏). Reading the sign placed in front of the gate, we found out it was, in fact, a forbidden area that lay at the bottom of the mountain. And we were on the mountaintop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a strange man came up to us. He told us he would go to the Boiling Pots and that he would show us the way down there if we would just jump over the fence and follow him. After some discussion, my family, 8 members, followed the man past the fence.

The 'path' was a slope (斜坡) covered in mud and high grass. Several times, our members fell but nobody gave up and turned back because it seemed an amazing adventure.

After about one hour's walk, we arrived at the bottom finally, but a large river stopped us. The strange man went to borrow a boat from his friend living nearby. We stood on the bank, waiting for him and joking that we could swim across the river.

Just then, I heard the voice of my father screaming at us to move. I looked up to the sky and saw a large tree falling towards us. I ran forward, pushing the people in front of me. I fell to the ground, hearing a loud sound of the tree hitting the ground, along with pieces of branches surrounding us.
