26、 Even if trees cannot walk, they are still on the move.
In parts of the Arctic, entire forests are moving northward. Across the Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. As that happens, the tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra (冻原)starts has been moving northward. Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind. To do this, plants tend to grow horizontal (水平的)branches low to the ground. The energy it takes for trees to grow this way means they don’t have enough energy to make seeds.
But as Earth's climate has been warming, trees no longer have to just grow horizontally. Many can instead grow up toward the sky. This takes less energy. And with all that leftover energy, these trees have started producing while spruce (白云杉)grows.
White spruce, which is a North American tree, is quite which can lot of seeds, which can move long distances in the wind. When wind-blown seeds end up on the tundra beyond the tree line, they eventually can sprout(发芽)new trees. This explains how a forest can move. Of course, the process would work only if the tundra were warm enough. But in recent years, the whole planet has been warming.whole planet has been warming, New trees will provide shelters for some snow, keeping the sun's rays from making the white surface disappear.
The trees absorb the sun's heat. This warms the even more trees to produce seeds. That further makes forest preventing much of it from being blown away. Snow can trap heat in the soil below, which encourages trees to grow. The recent rise of temperatures has helped more trees grow past the tree time. People worry about effects on the animals that depend on frozen conditions for food and shelter.
【1】What is the main cause of the trees in the Arctic moving northward?
A.The reducing of northern tundra.
B.The strong and cold wind
C.The rising temperature.
D.The rich resources in the north.
【2】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.New trees can trap the snow, which may make the soil colder.
B.The trapped snow prevents new trees from producing more seeds.
C.New trees can bring more food and shelter to local animals.
D.New trees can make the surrounding air warmer.

27、Waking up dizzy never feels right. And how we wake up can not only affect our mood and the day’s outlook, but also our cognition (认知) and mental performance.
In some instances, dizziness after waking has the potential to be dangerous several hours later, by reducing our performance in pivotal decision-making such as in health settings, emergency responses, security, or while driving. This cognitive state of reduced alertness is referred to as “sleep inertia”. It’s a growing concern as it can have serious consequences while performing high-risk tasks, including driving.
But when it comes to choosing an alarm, what exactly is the best choice? A growing body of evidence suggests different alarm sounds can positively influence human performance after waking.
Our systematic review published in 2020 showed temporal frequencies around 500 Hz are better at arousing young children than 2000+Hz varieties. Voice notifications such as a person yelling “wake up!” work better than higher frequencies. However, they are not as effective as 500 Hz tonal beeping (哔哔声) alarms-similar to those preinstalled in most mobile phones. Our research also explores how qualities of music, and specifically melody (旋律), play a role in encouraging alert wakefulness.
We found that the way in which people interpret their alarms “tunefulness” also reflects how dizzy they feel after waking. Here, people who use alarms that carry a tune they will readily sing along to will experience less dizziness than those with a standard “beeping” alarm.
With this in mind, we developed a custom rhythmic melody that led to significantly better performance upon and after waking. when compared to standard beeping alarms.
Other studies have also found popular music, which can be interpreted as being melodic, is good to counteract sleep inertia after a short nap, and even more yet if it is music the listener personally enjoys.

28、 Peggy Whitson's job demands a daily twohour workout in a gym where weight has no meaning and the view changes at 17,000 miles an hour.
Whitson makes it look easy. At 57, she is the oldest woman to fly in space, breaking the record last November, 2016, when she began her third longterm stay at the International Space Station. After returning home in September, 2017, the NASA astronaut felt matter-of-fact about the age milestone.
“It wasn't a record I was seeking for,” Whitson said. “I was 42 and 48 for my first two space flights. I feel lucky that I was able to get to do another one in my 50s. I don't think people should let age discourage them, even on those jobs that require some amount of physical fitness. The oldest man is John Glenn (at 77), and we've had male astronauts in their 60s before, so it's just a matter of time before women start flying in space at this age”.
On the earth, she stays fit by weightlifting, biking, playing basketball and water skiing. She shared what it's like to live in microgravity: “It's like you're in a swimming pool, but you don't have to worry about breathing. If I push off from one side, I'm going to float to the other side. Every direction feels exactly the same, which is really hard for your brain to grasp, but it's amazing how fast you adapt.
It's a big shock for the body to come back to Earth—everything is so heavy. We spend a lot of time getting used to being back in gravity again. Back pain was really the most dramatic for me this time. For me, coming home is harder than going up into space.”
【1】How long did Peggy Whitson spend for her third stay in the International Space Station?
A.About 300 days.
B.About 708 days.
C.About 107 days.
D.About 57 days.
【2】What does the underlined word probably mean in the passage?
A.Amazing.
B.Not surprising.
C.Enthusiastic.
D.Unbelievable.

B.Peggy Whitson is the oldest person to fly in space.
C.Peggy Whitson had been in space in 2002 and 2008.
D.There had been female astronauts over 60s flying in space before.
【4】Which of the following will Peggy Whitson probably say?
A.You can still be successful and do physical things when old.
B.I spent quite a lot of time getting used to the life in space.
C.The moment we reached the earth, we felt so relaxed.
D.I feel lucky that I am physically well after the whole journey.
29、 Researcher Ramon Llopis of the University of Valencia is a member of the international group behind Football Research in an Enlarged Europe (FREE), the aim of which is to develop a better understanding of football as a social and cultural phenomenon in Europe. The starting point is the “strong belief that football has important things to say about Europe and its citizens”.
Llopis tells us that the research points to football as “an important presence in the daily lives of many Europeans. Even people who are not particularly interested in the sport cannot avoid the discussions it creates, regardless of age, class and region.” He adds that “football is more than an activity which is done for enjoyment. It increases a sense of collective identity (集体认同).”
Football is a topic of exchange and conversation between Europeans of different ages and social classes. Based on the surveys carried out in the early stages of the project, 63.3%of people who call themselves football fans have chatted about football with someone from another European country in the past twelve months, 70%of football fans watch matches and summaries from leagues (联赛) outside of their country of origin, and 53.4% habitually follow the results and news from other European leagues on the Internet and social media.
So, rather than consider professional football as an economic activity or a healthy activity for both players and fans, public authorities should be aware of its huge socio-cultural impact. They should also pay attention to the increasing bad feeling surrounding football as a result of its commercialization (商业化), since it is causing many to turn away from the game.
【1】What can we learn about FREE from Paragraph 1?
A.It studies the impact of football on world culture.
B.It educates the public about the history of football.
C.It brings together researchers from several countries.

A.The history of football. B.The power of football.
C.The growth of football. D.The standard of football.
【3】How does the author explain that football is a big part of Europeans' conversation?
A.By using research findings.
B.By providing examples
C.By telling true stories.
D.By following the order of time.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude to the future of football in Europe?
A.Hopeful. B.Uncertain. C.Satisfied. D.Worried.

The law went into force last month, following research and a(n) 【2】number of accidents that involved people using electronic gadgets when crossing the street.
Who's to【3】 ? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited.
"We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can," says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a major limitation is the inability to【4】on two things at once".
The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question. A group of 18-to 21-year-olds and a group of 35-to 39-year-olds were given 90 seconds to translate【5】into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better when not interrupted. But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or a(n) 【6】message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and 【7】.
It is difficult to measure the productivity【8】by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spire, chief analyst at Basex. a business-research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $650 billion a year.
The【9】is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys conclude that 28 percent of the workers' time was spent on interruptions and【10】time before they returned to their main tasks.
