二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Kemira had just jumped in the shower when she heard her mother,Tammy, yelling. Kemira’s 12-day-old daughter was choking. Having fed baby Ryleigh just 30 minutes earlier, the 24-year-old new mother burst out of the bathroom and began patting (轻拍) her daughter on the back, but the baby didn’t make a sound. Kemira knew they needed to get to the hospital fast.

They had barely made it out of their neighborhood when the flashing lights of a police car appeared behind them. Officer Will Kimbro stopped the speeding driver. Tammy pulled over and jumped out of the car, crying that her granddaughter had stopped breathing. Desperate for help, Kemira handed her daughter to Kimbro. He found her heart was barely beating, and called an ambulance---it would take seven minutes, and the hospital was even further away. That was seven minutes Ryleigh didn’t have, because her lips had already become blue.

The fact that Kimbro was there was something of a miracle. He is a school police officer who usually spends his days patrolling (巡逻) the middle school ten miles away. But he travels further when school is out in the summer. Even luckier: He had recently completed a first-aid class.

Officer Kimbro gave the baby to Kemira to hold. He checked Ryleigh’s pulse and then began tapping and pressing her chest. Thanks to the class, Kimbro knew the choking baby didn’t have a chance if there was a blockage (堵塞物), and he used one finger to clear her throat. Twenty seconds later, Ryleigh began to cry. “If she’s crying like that, she’s breathing,” said Kimbro. Before the ambulance arrived, Kimbro continued giving first aid. The whole time he was thinking, “Don’t let this baby die in front of her mother and grandmother.”

At the hospital, Ryleigh recovered quickly, and she was brought back to life thanks to a determined school police officer who was in the right place at the right time.

【1】Why did Kimbro stop the car?

A.Kemira signaled to him for help.

B.Tammy drove faster than the legal limit.

C.There was a traffic jam in the neighborhood.

D.The baby had to be taken to hospital at once.

【2】What was Kemira’s reaction after being stopped?

A.She was too angry to explain herself.

B.She tried to do all she could to save her baby.

C.She got mad at Kimbro and gave up hope.

D.She lost her mind and didn’t know what to do.

【3】Kimbro felt sure that his aid worked when   ________.

A.he noticed Ryleigh’s lips were blue

    B.he checked Ryleigh’s pulse

    C.he pressed Ryleigh’s chest

    D.he heard Ryleigh crying

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Kimbro?

    A.Warm and lucky.

    B.Brave and generous.

    C.Kind and responsible.

    D.Intelligent and skillful.

  • 28、   Kids in primary schools in Bellaire, Ohio, have something to sing about. For the past eight years, public primary schools in that town didn’t offer music classes. They didn’t have the money to pay for them. But the school district got some support to bring back music this school year.

Many school officials across the country say music classes get students excited about going to school. And studies have shown that music classes may boost brainpower. For example, researchers from the University of Southern California recently released the results of a fiveyear study. They found that the brains of 10and 11yearolds who learned to play a musical instrument developed faster than the brains of kids who didn’t.

Though most people aren’t against teaching music in schools, not everyone says it’s necessary. Many school officials argue (争论) that learning music means less time spent on maths, writing, and science, all of which may be more useful to students later in life.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Music should be taught in school for the simple reason that it makes learning more fun. We have music classes at my school, and I love them!

Taking music lessons can also build character. In 2015, a research company called Grunwald Associates did a survey on music education. More than 60 percent of parents whose kids took music classes in school said their child became more focused (集中注意力的).

    —Noah Falcon, New Jersey

At my school, we don’t have music classes. I think that’s OK because it gives us more time to focus on main subjects, like reading and maths. It’s more important to learn these subjects than it is to learn how to play an instrument or sing.

If someone wants to take music lessons, he or she can do it outside of school. Once I took a mariachi (墨西哥流浪乐队音乐) class after school, so it didn’t take time away from my other classes.

    —Sophia Salazar, California

1What change has happened in primary schools in Bellaire this year?

    A.Music classes are offered.

    B.The school year is shortened.

    C.Singing is allowed in schools.

D.Kids can get prizes if they learn music.

2What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Create.

    B.Prevent.

    C.Increase.

    D.Discover.

3What does Noah Falcon think of music education?

    A.It is unnecessary.

    B.It is very important.

C.It is a waste of money.

    D.It is easy to continue.

4What can we learn about Sophia Salazar?

A.She didn’t like music at all.

    B.Music brings her more fun.

    C.Music helps her keep focused.

D.She took a music class after school.

  • 29、   People have been told to stay separated — at least six feet apart— and to practice what state and local officials call “social distancing”. Some have been asked to work at home. But as people try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, the resulting chaos and fear are bringing both large and small communities closer.

Simple acts of kindness are sprouting up online and in public, as neighbors, students, teachers, and others begin to connect those who can pass this long and isolating time smoothly, and the people who may not have the means to get through.

For Jesse Farren-James, helping out has taken the form of organizing trips to the supermarkets for supplies, and use of her membership card if anyone needs to buy large quantities. She posted the offer in a Facebook group for the community residents(居民), and some people came and turned to her. “I just feel so lucky that I have so many people in my life to rely on and so sad that not everyone has that,” she wrote in the group. In another interview, Farren-James said the “community is coming together" and “there are so many good and amazing people” offering to help where they can.

Also, parents in Dorchester have gathered together online. In a Facebook group called DotParents, parents have been raising money to buy food and supplies for students and families in the community. Lisa Graustein has been organizing this activity. On Thursday, she used the more than $2,000 raised by neighbors to purchase food in a restaurant supply company. A group of volunteers packed the food and planned to distribute to schools for those who may need it.

“Food shortage is real in our city and this crisis is going to be severe.” Graustein said. “But here’s something we can do that deal better with the hard time”. This idea is spreading. She said friends in four other states had being running similar campaigns.

Next, she wants to find a way to get landlords(房东)to temporarily abandon rent for residents in financial difficulties because of the outbreak.

1What do we know about Jesse Farren-James?

A.She is a shopping assistant working for a supermarket.

B.She is wealthy and always ready to help others.

C.She lent her membership card to the people in need.

D.She felt sad that not everyone has enough food.

2The underlined phrase in paragraph 2 “sprouting up” can be best replaced by ______.

    A.disappearing B.growing

    C.connecting D.helping

3What did parents in Dorchester do to offer help?

A.They bought food from the supermarket for community children.

B.They set up a restaurant supply company to provide food.

C.They raised money to deal with food shortage.

D.They distributed money to community residents.

4Which is the best title for this passage?

A.Acts of kindness in coronavirus outbreak

B.Effects of social media in coronavirus outbreak

C.Social distancing in the online community

D.Helping each other in financial difficulties

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
