  • 22、   Computers can injure you. Most other injuries happen suddenly. For example, if you fall off a bicycle and break your arm, it happens very quickly. But computer injuries happen slowly.

    Your eyes

Too much light can injure your eyes, so never sit too close to a computer screen. Your eyes should be at least 50 centimeters from the screen. Remember to look away from it sometimes. This gives your eyes a rest.

When you use a computer, the window should be on your left or your right. If it is behind you, the light will reflect(反射)on the screen. If the windows are in front of you, the sun and the screen will both shine into your eyes.

    Your hands and wrists(手腕)

Hand and wrist injuries can happen because the hands and wrists are moved in the same way hundreds of times. If you use a keyboard for a long time, follow these three rules:1)Rest your wrists on something. 2)Keep your elbows at the same height as the keyboard. 3)Stop sometimes and exercise your hands, wrists and fingers in a different way.

    Your back

Some people sit for many hours in front of a computer. If you sit in a wrong way, you can injure your back or your neck. So you should sit with your back straight. The top part of the screen should be in front of your eyes. Your forearms(前臂), wrists and hands should all be parallel to(与……平衡)the floor. If you are sitting for a long time, get up every 30 minutes and exercise your arms, legs and neck.

Enjoy your computer, but use it safely.

【1】The underlined word “injure” means “________”.

    A.保护

    B.影响

    C.伤害

    D.帮助

【2】To protect your hands and wrists, you should ________.

A.keep your elbows above the height of the keyboard

B.keep your wrists hanging without touching anything

C.keep your elbows below the height of the keyboard

D.stop playing computer sometimes and exercise

【3】Which of the following is true?

A.Sitting wrongly is only bad for your wrists and fingers.

B.Your eyes should be at the same height as the top part of the screen.

C.You should have a rest every two hours.

A.How to Use a computer Safely

    B.How to Play Computer Games

    C.How to Protect Your Eyes

    D.Computers Are very Harmful

  • 23、   The giraffe is the tallest modern land animal. It can be over 5. 5 meters tall. Its neck bone may be 1. 9 meters long. Yet the giraffe has only seven bones (骨头) in its neck, the same number as in the human. Even a small bird has many more bones in its neck than in a tall giraffe. Each bone in a giraffe’s neck is very long, while the bones in a human’s neck are small. That makes the difference. A female giraffe gives birth to one baby at a time. The baby, called a calf, is about 1. 9 meters tall at birth. By the age of eight it is full-grown. The giraffe can live for 30 years; the giraffe is good at running; it can run 30 kilometers per hour. The giraffe likes to live together, usually 7-10 a group. The giraffe eats mostly leaves. Because it has a long neck, it can reach the leaves high up on the trees.

    判断下列句子的正误,正确的填(T)错误的填(F

1The giraffe is the tallest modern animal living in the land.

2the giraffe has more bones in its neck than that in the human.

3The bones in a giraffe’s neck is very small and short.

4The giraffe can run 30,000 meters per hour .

5Since giraffes are very tall and strong, they live alone.

  • 24、In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this?

Irving’s interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents’ bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot. Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn’t think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit(驾驶舱)of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving’s life.

Irving really wanted to fly, but flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he worked different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home he practiced flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for flight school.

At flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. But he wasn’t finished. Next, he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.

Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted(顽强地坚持)in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $300,000. Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.

On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days-with 145 hours in the air-he landed back in Miami. A crowd of cheering people were there to welcome him.

Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect(影响)on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.

“Everyone told me what I couldn’t do.” says Irving. “They said I was too young, that I didn’t have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,” he says, “you have to pursue(追求)it.”
