六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.

My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”

At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”

That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

  • 22、   What can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someoneYes, the answer is chilies. Humans are the only animals to eat Chilies, even though they sometimes cause us discomfort.

About 600 million of Chinese, almost half of the national population, are chili eaters. However, did you know that this spicy (辣的)vegetable could put you in dangerA 34-year-old US man recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili people have known so far. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following days, reported BBC News.

But if chilies are truly harmful, why do people like to eat this vegetableSo what makes people love chilies so muchThe secret lies in a natural chemical reaction within human bodies. After eating chilies, the human body reacts to some natural chemicals that produce “a sense of happiness”, noted BBC News.

Scientists found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week.
