21、The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It’s a good chance to work on different activities that you don’t have much time to do during the rest of the year.
We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.
Alexis said,“At school,I’m really tired,so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many outdoor activities.”
Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a cafe. She told us,“It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year—sleep more, and visit my friends more.”
We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored.About half (52%) of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is exactly how it should be.
But not everyone said their summer vacation would be the right balance(平衡) between being busy and relaxing. Many thought that they would be too bored.
How bored or busy people feel during the summer vacation depends on how old they are.Survey-takers in their early teens were more likely (可能的) to be bored.Among them,40% said they would be bored and only 10% thought they would be too busy.

22、 Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.
My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”
At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”
That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

23、 The 31st Summer Olympics will be held in Brazil in 2016. Before this global sporting event, we started thinking about sports that didn’t exist any more and sports that were maybe a little strange. Read the following ones that have ever been included in the past Olympic Games.
Live Pigeon Shooting (1900)
This bloody event was only held once, at the 1900 Paris Games. Nearly 300 birds were killed during the competition, leaving a crime scene of feathers and blood. This is the only event in Olympic history that involved killing live animals.
Kabaddi (1936)
This sport is popular in South Asia. The object is for one member of a team to enter the other side’s half of the field, and score points. The attacker then returns to his half of the field.

Seven riders got on their bikes at 5 a.m. and rode until 5 p.m. Four riders dropped out before noon, but the winner, Adolf Schmal of Austria, managed about 180 miles. Only Schmal and one other finished.
Tug of War (1900—1920)

24、Dear Linda,
Have you ever been to Bangkok? It’s the capital city of Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia. We are staying here for a few days before we go to the island of Phuket. Some of our friends went to Phuket last year. They said to us, “You should go there because there are beautiful beaches and it is very relaxing.” I will take many photographs and show them to you.
Bangkok is a very interesting city to visit. Yesterday we went to the old part of the city to look at the buildings there. It’s also very crowded and busy. There are lots of people and traffic. This morning we went shopping. Bangkok is a wonderful place to shop for jewelry and clothes. We bought some gold bracelets and necklaces this morning. Before we leave Bangkok, we are going to go back and buy some clothes. Thailand is also called the “Land of Smiles” because the people are very friendly. And it’s true! The people are really nice and they are always smiling.
The food in Bangkok is delicious. I like Thai food, but it is something a little spicy for me. You can also get Chinese food here because many people in Bangkok came originally from China. The Chinese food is very good, and it isn’t as spicy as Thai food. You can get European and American food here, too. Yesterday I saw an American restaurant. I like American food but I don’t want to eat American food in Thailand. I’d rather eat Thai or Chinese food here. I like to try new things when I travel.
The weather has been very hot. Yesterday it rained and got a little cooler, but today it’s very hot again.
