22、I travelled to Canada one summer with students from my French class. It was my first trip outside the United States. It was exciting because I could finally speak the foreign language I was learning and I could hear native speakers (说母语的人).
Canada is an excellent place to practice French for two reasons.
First, most people in the French-speaking part of Canada can speak both French and English. I can use French when I’m ready. There wouldn’t be much pressure. If I have something very important to communicate, they can understand me if I speak English.
Second, people there like it when you try to speak French, even if you only speak a little. They hold French in higher esteem (认为……更高贵) than English.
Interestingly enough, although I wanted to communicate in my newly learnt language, I soon found I could hardly use any of the words I have learnt when I tried to use them. We learnt the accent (口音) used in France, but the accent used in Canada is different from what we learnt. It sounded a little strange to me. And many words are completely different.
Although I didn’t get many opportunities (机会) to practice French in Canada, I’m still thankful for this experience.

23、 Over the last century, many building trends(潮流)have come and gone. But the buildings designed (设计) by Ieoh Ming Pei, one of the world's best-known architects (建筑), have not. The designs of this Chinese-American architects stands as his special talents to the whole world. However, the man behind the famous buildings died on May 16, at age 102.
During his long work life, Pei has left over 50 buildings with different styles (风格) around the world. According to him, it is dangerous for an architect to be marked with only one style. Instead, he was known for his eclectic style, bringing together opposite ideas into each design-East and West, ancient and modern, natural and man-made.
His style may come from his life experiences. He was born and grew up in China, and then he went to the US to study architecture at 18. He studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later at Harvard. "I've never left China, because home is a place your heart always belongs to", he once said.
Pei tried to include local (当地的) and historical ideas in his designs. When designing Suzhou Museum in the 2000s, Pei made the building go with the city. He built small halls with traditional white walls and dark roofs (屋顶), just like the classical Chinese gardens which Suzhou are famous for. At the same time, the lines and the windows in the roof bring something modern to the museum.
Even in Pei's 80s when he was designing the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, he still kept learning new things. He spent months in the Middle East visiting special places.
