六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)

    Sick while in motion

As the weather gets warmer, there are few things that are better to do than travel. But traveling might not be that fun for everyone, especially for those who have motion sickness.

Motion sickness is also called travel sickness. It is a common experience for many people. Depending on how you travel, it can be called carsickness or seasickness. People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are in motion. They feel sick and dizzy, like the room around them won’t stop spinning.

It is generally believed that motion sickness happens when your senses become confused with each other, Scientific American reported.

We use different parts of our body to sense movement. Our eyes tell us if we are moving. The inner ears contain a special liquid that helps us sense our direction and balance. Our muscles react to movement.

When you move around, these body parts work well together. But when you are in a car or an airplane, they get confused. Your inner ear signals that you’re moving, but your eyes say you’re sitting still because you can’t see that you’re moving. This mismatch gives us motion sickness.

But some people are less sensitive to motion sickness. This may be because they have certain genes that prevent mismatching senses, Bethann Hromatka, a genetics expert from the US, told the Atlantic.

Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness, scientists believe that the key is to simply try to adapt to it. For example, some astronauts do special exercises that give them mild motion sickness. After a week or two, the astronauts become used to it and don’t feel uncomfortable anymore, Sam Puma, a NASA flight doctor, told the BBC.

【1】People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are ________.

    B.driving

    C.in motion

    D.in bed

【2】According to paragraph 3, if your senses become confused with each other, ________.

【3】The special liquid in the inner ears can sense________.

    A.movement and sickness

    B.direction and balance

    C.movement and balance

    D.direction and movement

【4】Bethann Hromatka thinks that________may prevent mismatching senses.

    A.certain genes

    B.the speed of car

    C.motion

    D.travelling

【5】What’s the purpose of the passage?

    A.To introduce motion sickness.

    B.To introduce sickness.

    C.To introduce gene.

D.To introduce the parts of body.

But if you keep your sense of humor(幽默感),you can always have a good laugh at the mistakes(错误) you make. Don't be unhappy if people seem to be laughing at your mistakes. • 23、Nearly all kids have had the same experience. They are eating in a restaurant with their parents. They finished the spaghetti minutes ago. Now, they are bored. Their little brother is kicking them under the table. He is also complaining about the desserts(餐后甜点). Yet their parents are still eating and talking…and talking…and talking.

“Be patient.” One parent says. “We’ll have dessert soon.”

All kids know what happens next. After dessert, their parents drink coffee. Then they talk some more. Again, the children must wait. They have been in school all day and would rather be running and playing. Instead, they must sit in a chair and stare at a wall.

Going to a restaurant doesn’t have to be this way. Many restaurants say they are “family-friendly”. Family restaurants, such as fast-food restaurants should play areas for children. At these restaurants, almost every play area is a big room full of climbing equipment. The room is usually, packed with happy kids. Parents can eat while the children play. Everyone is happy.

The real problem begins when families want to eat a fancier meal(大餐). The parents don’t want to hurry through the meal but talk to each other. They do not have bored children pestering(烦扰) them about leaving. That’s no fun for kids either. For them, going to a nicer restaurant means just one thing: sit still and be quiet.

On family blogs across the Web, dozens of parents post the same question all the time; are there any nicer restaurants with play areas for kids? Research shows that some nicer restaurants do have play areas. In warmer cities, it is easier for restaurants to build play areas outside. For example, at one restaurant kids can sail tiny little motor boats in a small, shallow pond. Parents can sit on a beautiful yard and watch the kids play. Some nicer restaurants even have indoor play areas. Research also shows that these restaurants serve more than just burgers, chickens and fries.

So, it’s possible for a restaurant to provide both food and a place where kids can play. These restaurants seem to be popular, too. For some, families must have reservation days in advance. For others, families might be forced to wait in long lines. Clearly, quality food and safe play areas are both good for business.

1Why do children get unhappy at the restaurant?

    A. Because they can’t join in their parents’ talk.

    B. Because the dessert isn’t served in time.

    C. Because they can do nothing but wait.

    D. Because the food there isn’t delicious.

2What is the real problem mentioned in the passage?

    A. Children don’t like eating fancier food.

    B. Not many nicer restaurants provide play areas.

    C. Parents don’t trouble to comfort their bored kids.

    D. People have to wait for seats in nicer restaurants.

3What conclusion can we draw from the research?

    A. It’s common for nicer restaurants to provide good food and play areas.

    B. Building play areas is more difficult for restaurants in colder cities.

    C. Serving more kinds of foods may help restaurants to make more money.

    D. It’s possible for restaurants to find a balance to make both happy.

4What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

    A. Cities need to help develop restaurant business.

    B. Children are supposed to be much more patient.

    C. Restaurants are supposed to give kids some space.

    D. Parents need to care more about their kids when eating.

  • 24、You may often hear some myths(传言)about animals. For example, one dog year equals about seven human years, chameleons(变色龙)change color to match their environment... Today, let's talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a baby bird, the parents will completely abandon(抛弃)it. Do you really believe it?

In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases they are unable to even notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types of birds aren't so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.

Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandoned their nests from something touching their young, just because they noticed it by sight, not smell. When this happens, the parent birds usually won't care, other than to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may temporarily(暂时地)abandon the nest in order to better watch whatever disturbed their nest comes back.

What's more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or something to that effect, you could create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it, and when the parents came back, they wouldn't care their baby birds were in a different nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.

【1】Which of the following is true?

A.Birds have a very good sense of smell.

B.A baby bird will die soon if it is touched by someone.

C.Whatever disturbed the nest will never come back.

D.Some birds will protect their babies when they are in danger.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Their nest.

    B.Their baby.

    C.Some birds abandoning their nests.

    D.Something touching their young.

【3】The parent birds _______if we make a new nest for baby birds to take the place of the old one.

    A.will never come back

    B.will worry about their babies

    C.won't mind

    D.will take their babies away

【4】Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage?

    (①=Paragraph 1(第一段), ②=Paragraph 2…)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【5】What is the best title of this passage?

    A.Bird Truth

    B.Baby Birds

    C.Bird Nests

    D.Bird Smell
