  • 25、Wang Yaping, together with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, went into space on October 16th, 2021. The 41-year-old Wang became the first Chinese woman astronaut to enter Tiangong space station.

Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men. “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she said.

The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning(旋转的)machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button,” said Wang. “If you can’t stand it, you can press it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.” That strong spirit finally made her dream come true in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission(任务).

Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages. “Women may be more patient and can better deal with loneliness.”

Wang Yaping went a long way before becoming the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. She sets a good example for all women who dream of going to space.

    【1】What was Wang Yaping’s job in 2003?

    A.She was a pilot.

    B.She was a worker.

    C.She was a teacher.

【2】What do Wang Yaping’s words mean in Paragraph 2?

A.The space environment is easy to change.

B.Only men can go to space station in the world.

C.Men and women will face the same difficulties in space.

D.Both men and women astronauts can go to space bravely.

【3】Why would Wang become blind for a while when training?

A.Because she was in a dark room.

B.Because her brain was short of blood.

C.Because there was something wrong with her ears.

D.Because she is a woman, she couldn’t stand the training.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Wang is the first woman astronaut in the world.

B.Wang dreamed of being an astronaut in 2003.

On Oct 23, Chinese swimmer Qin Haiyang got the title (称号) of the Best Male Swimmer of the Year 2023. He got the award just one day after he won the Swimming World Cup Overall Male Award. 【1】

People call Qin the “King of Breaststroke (蛙泳之王)” for his breaststroke achievements in 2023. 【2】 At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the 24-year-old broke five Asian records and became the first swimmer in history to win all three breaststroke golds at a single edition (单届).

【3】 It’s harder to swim fast because all the strokes (划水) in breaststroke happen under the water. This makes the water push back on the swimmer more, and it takes a lot of skill to swim well. “Even a small change in how you move your hands can make you swim faster or slower, I only need one to swim as far as they do.”

Even though Qin has won many awards, he is still modest. 【4】 “I’m just a breaststroke swimmer,” Qin said.

    A.Breaststroke is not easy.

B.Qin keeps working hard to swim faster.

C.So he doesn’t want people to call him King of Breaststroke.

D.He won all 23 gold medals in breaststroke in the big competitions.

E.These are two very important achievements for Chinese swimming.

Here’s the problem: some of my friends who still live with their parents spend the weekends with me. But now they make mine theirs. They bring boy friends over, talk on the phone, etc.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes it makes the place feel comfortable and warm, but this is my home, not a party house, what shall I do?

    Joan

    Dear Joan,

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict that you grew up in. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love you, but I also need some personal space. So please call before you come over.”

    Edward

    D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends that her friends bring over

【2】According to Mr. Expert, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feeling?

    A. She is afraid of hurting her friends.

    B. She does not understand true friendship.

    C. Her family experience stops her doing so.

    D. She does not put her needs first.

【3】The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means   .
