四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、English words don’t stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use, or old words are used in a new way.

English can be changed by borrowing words from other languages. The word“tomato”was borrowed from Mexico and“tea”came from China and so on. Now new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words are formed by adding two words together. “Countryside” and “earthquake” are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word “photo” was made from “photograph” by cutting off the end of the longer word. “Plane” was made by cutting off the front part of “airplane”. The names of people and products can become new words, too. Our “sandwich”was named after a man called Sandwich and “sello tape”(透明胶带) was a name given by the company that first made the product.

【1】New English words are needed because _____.

A.people use old words in a new way

    B.the population is bigger now

C.the old words are not enough

D.new ideas and new inventions appear all the time

【2】Which of the following words was taken to English from another country?

    A.Plane.

    B.Sandwich.

    C.Tomato.

    D.Countryside.

【3】Which of the following words came from China?

    A.Tea.

    B.Earthquake.

    C.Airplane.

    D.Sello tape.

【4】How many ways of developing English words does the passage tell us?

    A.Three.

    B.Four.

    C.Five.

    D.Six.

【5】The main idea of this passage is _____.

A.that the English language is always changing

B.that there are new ideas in England today

C.how people name new products and inventions

D.how people use old words in a new way

  • 25、   Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers.

Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring these things of your own. That's because some hotels in Beijing have no longer provided guests with these disposables (一次性用品). Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It's a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment.

In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of lunch bowls every year!

Plastic can take 100 to 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw away, the better environment we will have.

So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again. Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:

Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.

After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then use it over and over again.

    Do not use paper cups.

At your school canteen (餐厅), use your own bowls and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

1Many guests like to use disposable things because they are very________.

    A.cheap B.expensive C.renewable D.convenient

2Some Beijing hotels have no longer provided guests with the followings free EXCEPT ________.

    A.toothbrushes B.slippers C.Wifi D.shampoo

    3The underlined phrase"break down "means________.

    A.破裂 B.分解 C.崩溃 D.故障

4How can we deal with a used plastic bowl or bag?

A.Wash it out and let it dry for reusing B.Throw it away at once

C.Burn it D.Give it to your neighbors.

5What can we learn from this passage?

A.Many disposable things are harmful because they can be used only once

B.In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1, 320 tons of lunch bowls every month

C.We'd better use either cloth shopping bags or plastic ones in our daily life.

D.We should bring disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste wherever we travel

  • 26、   Do you think laughter can help you deal with pain? Scientists from Britain did two experiments(实验). The first was done in a lab. People wore special wristbands(腕带). Some of them were asked to watch comedies while others watched serious programs. Then the scientists tightened(勒紧) the wristbands to see how much pain the people could feel.

The other test was done at an art festival. Some people watched a comedy show and others watched a drama(戏剧). At the same time, they had to put their backs against the wall and keep their legs bent(弯曲的) just like sitting on a chair. They did this before and after the show.

Scientists found that just 15 minutes of laughter improves people’s ability to stand pain by 10%. However, the serious programs and the drama didn’t make a difference to pain at all.

The study found that the magic power of laughter comes from endorphins(内啡肽). These are chemicals(化学物质). They are produced by the human body. They make you feel less pain and can make people feel happier. Exercise can produce endorphins. Your muscles(肌肉) move in and out when you are laughing. Scientists believe that this makes your muscles tiring, so we start to produce endorphins.

Scientists also found that the only real and relaxing laughter works not just polite laughter.

Next time you have a headache, get together with a group of Mends, watch a funny movie and laugh. You will soon feel a lot better because laughter is the best medicine.

【1】Scientists knew how much pain the people felt by _______ in the first experiment.

    A.eating delicious dishes

    B.putting backs against walls

    C.tightening special wristbands

    D.sitting on comfortable seats

【2】The other test was finished _______.

    A.on a chair

    B.in a lab

    C.on Sports Day

  • 27、   A feral child is a child who, from a young age, has lived with animals in the wild. What makes wild animals adopt these children and raise them as their own is a mystery. Since feral children have often had no contact with humans for a long time, they may be more like wild animals than people. Their stories, although often upsetting can teach us how people learn and use language — and perhaps even what it means to be human.

In Uganda in 1991, a tribeswoman saw a naked boy living with a troop of wild monkeys in the jungle. The woman was shocked and quickly told the people in her village about the boy. When they tried to take him away from the monkeys, the frightened boy threw sticks at them and climbed up a tree to hide. The monkeys fought fiercely, trying to stop the tribesmen from taking him away, but they did not succeed.

After his "rescue", the boy was taken to Kamuzinda Chritan Orphanage, outside Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. He was identified as John Ssabunnya, a boy who had disappeared three years earlier after his mother was murdered and his father went missing. John was only two years old when he disappeared.

John couldn't speak when he arrived at the orphanage. It was obvious that he did not know how to act in a human way-- he knew only how to behave like a monkey. However, he soon began to talk and was found to have a beautiful singing voice.

John shot to fame at the age of fourteen, when he toured the UK with a children's choir(合唱队). "His is a remarkable story. One day it could even be made into a film.” said tour organizer Hillary Cook.

1The underlined word "had no contact with" in paragraph 1 is closest to________.

A.had no patience with B.had no communication with

C.had no quarrel with D.had no choice but stay with

2What can we learn from Hillary Cook's words in the last paragraph?

A.John could not act like a human. B.John's experience is quite unusual.

C.John is like other boys in the choir. D.People saved John and protected him.

3It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.feral children are born with the talent to talk with animals

B.feral children are sure to be back to the human community

C.all feral children can be successful after living with humans

D.the study of feral children may help the research on language

4The writer organizes the passage by_________.

    A.using numbers B.showing opinions C.telling a story D.listing reasons
