Now people depend more on the Internet to store information. Do people remember less? If you know your computer will store information, why do you put it in your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what and how we remember.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow did some experiments(实验). She and her team wanted to know if the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts and then stored them into a computer. The first group of people were told that the computer had stored the information. But the second group didn’t know that. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a certain computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder’s location(位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Instead, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories, that is, people are learning how to organize a great deal of information so that they are able to find it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

25、My father was always drunk and angry. He beat me every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in his pocket. One day I found an old saw (锯子) that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house, I started to make a hole with the saw on the wooden floor under the big table.
The next day my father said, “Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Be quick! And don’t try anything. Remember, I’m watching you!”
While I was fishing by the river. I saw an empty boat nearby. “A boat!” I thought happily. “This is my chance to escape. I’ll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!”
When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making it.
“I did a good job,” I thought, looking at the hole. “Now I’ll get my father’s gun.”
I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly climbed out through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. To my great joy, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig’s blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father’s axe (斧子) with some of the pig’s blood. I took the pig’s body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.
“This way people will think ▲_____!” I thought. “They’ll come and look for my body in the river.” This idea made me smile.
I waited until it was dark and got into the boat and went to Jackson’s Island. I knew about Jackson’s Island because Tom, Ben, Joe and I had a lot of fun adventures there.

26、Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don’t all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks (星巴克)coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981.That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡 ) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the “feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.

27、“Children need more geography field trips. Schools should organize geography field trips to stop pupils from sitting before computer screens for a long time. And children should be encouraged to see the natural world and study geography,” says Michael Palin.
The famous actor and writer, Michael Palin, made the comments days after a study showed that pupils in the UK were less likely to take part in science field trips than in most other developed countries.
The study found that 13% of schools in the UK failed to take children out of the classroom regularly.
Mr. Palin said that field trips were an important part of geography and that he was interested in geography because he had a good geography teacher and he had many opportunities to “get out of the school building”.
In an interview, Mr. Palin said, “It was important for children to see things for themselves and learn about the rest of the world. You have to show them a mountain, show them a factory, show them a power station.”
Mr. Palin had been to the North and South Poles, the Himalayas(喜马拉雅山脉), the Sahara and Eastern Europe.
“Geography is about the study of the earth. It is awide-rangingsubject,” he said. “It’s related to everything we do: what we eat, what transport we take to work, where we live, what houses are made of, and so on.”
He said children needed to get basic geography knowledge first and that once they had the basic knowledge they could move on to deeper problems, such as population and pollution. “Today’s children will need to deal with a lot of problems when they grow up. They have to learn geography today,” he said.
