四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Many young people want to become pop-stars. It is their great ambition(雄心) in life. They think pop-stars earn a lot of money, they lead interesting and exciting lives, thousands of fans love them, and they become famous!

Yes, but first they must become stars. Most performers star life with a group. This is the pattern nowadays. But there are many groups and competitions are hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number survive. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.

And very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so much money, perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. Whats more, they have quite a lot of expenses(开销). They have to pay a manager, for example. He is the key person in their lives and takes about 20% of their earnings-perhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van. Sometimes they are still playing for the last two items.

And dont forget, they have to travel a great deal-sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel, just to save money.

So now, what do you think? Are pop-stars so rich? And do they have such exciting lives?

【1】Which of the following is the reason that many young people want to become pop-stars?

    A. Living an exciting life.

    B. Becoming a rich man.

    C. Being loved by thousands of fans.

    D. All of the above.

【2】Why is the groups manager well paid? Because __________.

    A. he runs this group

    B. he looks after them

    C. he is important to them

    D. he buys them clothes and instruments

【3】 The writer makes us believe ___________.

    A. it is pleasant to become a pop-star

    B. if you work very hard in pop groups, you will reach the top

    C. pop-stars are neither too rich nor too happy

    D. general persons had better not dream of pop-stars

  • 26、   The health care system (医疗体系) of a country is very important and different countries have different ways of paying for it.

Britain has a free health care system paid for by the government. It was the first country in the world to do so. Health care is free for everyone living in Britain. Most doctors and nurses work for the government and most hospitals are owned by the government. Until recently this system was very successful but lately there have been problems. • 27、   Years ago, we were, asked to create a newspaper in groups about world culture in our history class.

We first wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. Unluckily, Mrs. Bartlett, our teacher, didn't put me in the group with any of my friends. Instead, I was with Mauro, who never spoke English, Juliette, who always wore thick glasses and Rachel, who wore strange clothes. I had never talked to them. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends!

I was so sad that I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. "I know what you want, Karina, " she gently patted me on my shoulder, "but your group needs a leader. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this project. Only you can make it."

    I was shocked.

"Will you help them?" she asked.

"Yes, " I replied. I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.

I bravely walked to my group and started our project. We had different tasks according to our interests. Gradually, 1 felt myself enjoying their company. I found out Mauro was struggling with English. Behind Juliette's thick glasses were her sparkling eyes. Rachel was so creative that she wanted to be a fashion designer. I realized that they were not strange they were just people that no one cared enough for-except Mrs. Bartlett. Her thoughtfulness brought out the best in the four of us.

I learned something that week. I was given a chance to see other people in a new light. I learned that who we, are is more important than what we are or seem to be.

Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that project, but thought we should have handed it right back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.

1Karina badly wanted to be with her friends because she thought ___________.

B.her group mates knew little about world culture

C.it would be easy for her friends to create newspapers

D.it would he hard to communicate with her group mates

2What can we learn about Karina's group?

A.Juliette didn't like her thick glasses. B.Mauro had trouble in speaking in public.

C.Karina was made the leader of her group. D.Rachel wanted to be a pop star in the future.

3From the story,  we know Mrs. Bartlett is _____________________ .

    A.thoughtful B.creative C.honest D.strict
