  • 21、More than half the world’s population will be regarded as obese by 2035 if action is not taken: the World Obesity Federation warns. Obese is a medical term used to describe a person with an excess of body fat.

Its report says, more than four billion people will be affected with rates rising fastest among both boys and girls. The rates are expected to double from 2020 levels among them. The report predicts the cost of obesity will be up to more than $4 trillion (£ 3. 3 trillion) every year by 2035.

The report also stresses that low-or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia are expected to see the greatest rises. The first reason lies in that people there prefer to eat highly processed foods. In the second place, they are likely to sit too long. Thirdly, in those countries, there are fewer policies to control food supply and marketing. Last but not the least, people there are short of healthcare services to help in weight management and health education.

The president of the federation, Louise Baur, described the report’s findings as a clear warning to countries to act now. If they don’t take any actionthey will be faced with endless bad effects in the future. Baur said that governments and policymakers around the world need to do all they can to avoid passing health, social, and economic costs on to the younger generation. They should find out what are the root causes of obesity.

The data published in the report will be presented to the UN on Monday

  • 22、MUMBAI Indian commandos battled into the early hours of Friday to end a multiple hostage crisis in Mumbai after suspected Islamic militants killed 125 people across the city.

Officials said they had almost totally cleared the luxury Taj Mahal hotel where gunmen had been held up for more than 24 hours.

Indian security forces personnel released hostages from Nariman House in Mumbai.Thirty-nine people were rescued from the five-star Oberoi hotel, where "mopping up(清理火场)" operations were still underway, police said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the militants had come from "outside the country.”

The Press Trust of India said one Pakistani militant had been arrested, although Pakistan's government fiercely denied any involvement.

Indian media reports said between six and nine foreign nationals were among the dead in Mumbai -- including a Japanese businessman, an Australian, a Briton , a German and an Italian.

At least five gunmen had been shot dead and one captured, police said.Fourteen security personnel were also killed, including the head of Mumbai's anti-terror squad.

Up to 327 people were reported wounded.

The main Bombay Stock Exchange was closed until further notice, as were shops, schools and businesses.

Prime Minister Singh said the aim had clearly been to spread panic by choosing high profile(知名度高的)targets and "indiscriminately(随心所欲地)killing foreigners."

  • 23、In August 2020, Kate Wilson, a 16-year-old from Shrewsbury, posted on the social media video platform TikTok a series of sentences from books she had read. Set to a piece of soft music, the short video plays out as Wilson holds up copies of the books. “You have been the last dream of my soul.” from A Tale of Two Cities. “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” from Wuthering Heights. It has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

These posts, called BookTok, can attract millions of views, and light an appreciation of books in young readers again. “I started reading again after six years when I came across BookTok for the first time last October,” says Mireille Lee, 15.

Adam Silvera’s 2017 novel They Both Die at the End is one of the books to have benefited from the BookTok effect. In March, it shot to the top of the teen fiction charts, selling more than 4, 000 copies a week. The book has sold more than 200, 000 copies in the UK after thousands of posts about it.

Publishers are watching with interest. Publisher Horrox says, “There’s something about the fact that it is under a minute. People who are consuming this content watch a 32-second video and someone’s like: ‘This book has romance, and it’s really heartbreaking. Thankfully, it’s only a fiction.’ And then the viewers think: ‘Oh, OK, those are all things that I’m interested in. I’ll go buy it.’” By December 2020, Wilson was being contacted regularly by publishers, who had realized that TikTok “really does sell books”.

Jenny is 22, and says, “I thought TikTok was ridiculous last year before the first lockdown. I really did think it was just for 14-year-olds, but BookTok is such a lovely community. There are people who like the same books as me, and I can talk about the books that I like. It just seems a little bit magical.”

【1】Why does the author mention the story of Kate Wilson?

    A.To make a prediction.

    B.To clarify Tiktok.

    C.To present some posts.

    D.To introduce BookTok.

【2】What do we know about the book They Both Die at the End?

A.It is fiction intended merely for children.

B.It has become the bestseller in the UK.

C.It has made profits from the posts on TikTok.

D.Over 200, 000 copies have been sold worldwide.

【3】What can be inferred from what Publisher Horrox said?

A.People like to advertise on TikTok.

B.TikTok is the best platform to sell books.

C.BookTok videos are short but very effective.

D.Publishers started to contact Wilson regularly.

【4】What is Jenny’s attitude towards BookTok?

    A.Approving.

    B.Critical.

    C.Objective.

    D.Uncaring.

  • 24、Researchers from Purdue University have developed a new white paint that can reflect over 95 percent of sunlight, which can cool the surface even lower than the surrounding temperature. Painted on a building, the new paint could help cut cooling costs and energy use.

Many different reflective cooling paints have been developed over the years, but they all have their disadvantages. For the new study, the Purdue researchers developed a new method—using calcium carbonate(碳酸钙)fillers, which are much richer, cheaper, and absorb less ultraviolet(紫外线的)light. And the new reflective cooling paint can give off more sunlight—reflecting 95.5 percent of the light that strikes it. That's better than many of the other paints in development, which manage between 80 and 90 percent, although it falls short of the record holder—the Teflon coating, which reflects 98 percent of light.

The team tested the new coating outdoors over two days, and showed that under direct sun- light it remained 1. 7℃ below the surrounding temperature. In another set of tests, the researchers painted some parts of a pattern with the new paint, and others with a regular white paint of the same thickness. Using a special camera, they could see the pattern clearly, thanks to the difference in temperature between the two materials.

The team says that the new paint could not only help cool buildings, but prevent outdoor electrical systems from overheating. But to ensure that it is commercially practicable, the researchers next plan to investigate how well it lasts out in the environment.

"The cost of our paint may be comparable to other commercial paints or even lower than them," says Xiulin Ruan, an author of the study. "The key is to ensure the reliability of the paint so that it is workable in long-term outdoor applications."

【1】What's the advantage of the new paint?

    A.Absorbing enough sunlight.

    B.Developing new energy

    C.Lowering cooling costs.

    D.Improving electrical system

【2】How did the researchers study the effect of the new paint?

    A.By analyzing special pictures.

    B.By conducting field tests.

    C.By collecting temperature data

    D.By assessing its nature.

【3】What can we infer from the result of the research?

    A.The paint still needs testing

B.The paint can be used for long.

    C.The paint is incomparable.

    D.The paint has reliable performance

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A new white paint helps cool building

B.Researchers lower the costs of paints

C.A regular paint solves heat consumption.

    D.Environment-friendly paints come into market.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Imagine you receive an e-mail like this ARE YOU GOING TO CLASS TODAY? This e-mail “sounds" like the writer is yelling because using all capital letters in an e-mail is usually the way that people shout online. Knowing when to use capital letters is one example of online etiquette (礼仪)・ Following are some dos and don'ts for communicating appropriately with others in cyberspace.

First, always remember that you are sending messages to a real person, not just to a computer. So don’t type anything you wouldn't say to someone's face. Also, remember that the person who receives your message cannot hear the tone of your voice, or see the expression on your face. So make sure your meaning is clear.

Internet is a big place with lots of information, and there are many new things to discover. However, don't take anything without paying for it, unless it's free. Don’t use information that someone else has written, and say it's yours. Do share your knowledge of the Internet with others.

It's okay to express your opinions online in forums like chat rooms or message boards, but don't start arguments with people. "Flame wars" in online discussions can be interesting to read, but are often unfair to other members of the group. Express your ideas, but remember that fighting on or offline is not appropriate.

Remember that people judge you by your words as well as your actions, so do try to write well. Good writing skills, as well as correct grammar and spelling, do matter. Send polite, well-written messages to others. If you are uncertain about how to spell a word or which phrase to use, look it up. There are lots of helpful books and websites.
