21、 For better or worse, many of us never forget those typical British school days and with a website that now brings together over 32, 200 schools, colleges and universities as well as a growing number of users, you won’t have to.
SchoolMates is a networking platform, which helps people find friends from their past. Subscribers(订阅者) simply need to enter their name, email and password and then the school name as well as the years attended. Users then receive an email to inform them when other students from their year sign up.
The easy-to-use website makes it possible for users to share conversations, jokes, stories, memories and photographs. “The website is an extension of social media, but simpler, catering for (为…提供所需) those who don’t want to get swaddled, but still want to feel part of the community,” explains founder and CEO Chris Goodwin. “It enables users to move away from annoying updates and ‘photoshopped lives’ and get straight to reconnecting with friends from the past.”
According to experts, there are several reasons people should reconnect with their roots and reach out to those who once were fundamental part of their lives. Life seems to become more complex and more difficult with age. Reconnecting with past friends can go a long way to helping people accept life as it is now by allowing them to reflect on paths not taken. People often rely only on their own angles, and reconnecting with past friends allows people to see the world in a new light. Not surprisingly, building healthy social connections promotes changes in life.
With booming updates, social media form an interactive online community, but meanwhile, they often affect people in a bad way. “SchooMates is the answer for people expecting a simpler, less competitive way of keeping in touch with old friends,” concludes Chris.

22、It is reported that half the world’s forests have already been destroyed. This widespread destruction is due to deforestation (采伐森林). Deforestation is the removal of a forest or group of trees where the land is later transformed to a non-forest use. Cutting down trees is necessary for man’s survival. However, deforestation has a number of negative effects on the environment and needs to be controlled.
There are two main purposes for cutting down trees and one of them is to use the trees as resources. Essential items like paper, furniture and charcoal are all made from trees. Deforestation is also carried out to clear land for farming and to make room for roads and houses. As the population grows, more of the forest has to be cleared.
Although deforestation is necessary up to a point, it has some negative effects on the environment. Firstly, cutting down forests destroys animal habitats, leaving them with no place to live in. Deforestation also allows erosion to occur, which leaves the land easy to landslides and makes it difficult for plants to grow there. Finally, the removal of trees also worsens air pollution. Trees act as natural air filters that change carbon dioxide into oxygen. When they are removed, carbon dioxide can build up and pollute the atmosphere. Hence, it is obvious that deforestation harms the environment.
Due to the harm deforestation causes, it is necessary to control it. There are a number of ways to do this. One of them is to make better use of farming land. That means we do not need as much land for farming, and hence do not need to cut down so many trees. There must also be laws to limit deforestation and these laws must be enforced strictly. On top of that, reforestation must be carried out systematically. This method involves planting new trees and plants in areas where deforestation has occurred to replace what was destroyed.
To sum up, although deforestation must be carried out, it can harm the environment and must be controlled. Beyond a certain point, this damage to the environment cannot be fixed. Hence, we should do our best to make sure that the damage is never too great to fix.

23、Finding the local stamp dealer may not be everyone’s most important thing on holiday, but for 26-year-old Anita Lo, it is. What started at the age of five with her grandfather’s old album has developed into a collection of several thousand which is regularly updated from her travels. She shares her collection on Instagram and WhatsApp and uses searching engines to search for items by price or country.
Having set up his own YouTube channel, Exploring Stamps, 32-year-old Graham Beck loves to communicate with fellow enthusiasts. To date, he has uploaded 70 videos which see him select a stamp and explore the history behind it. “I discovered my old childhood album when clearing my house, and began googling the images and had this realisation: I realised how fascinating stamps really are with all this social history documented on these little pieces of paper. They give such a unique perspective on different subjects and that’s what gives it the edge over other hobbies, rather than particular paper types and printing styles.”
His best-received video has attracted 80,000 views, and he sees online prevalence of the subject, and the growing use of multimedia at trade shows, as critical to engaging the next generation.
George James, head of Commonwealth at stamp dealer publisher Stanley Gibbons in London, agrees to the idea. “With the amount of money involved at the top end of the market, some detection technology has become highly developed and widely used.”
Stanley Gibbons’ in-house experts will check postmarks or other differences in letter sizes and hole spacing, and in more complex cases send them onto the official society. Experts will also use a video spectral comparator (光谱视频比较仪)—the software used to check banknotes and passports to compare some properties of ink and spot the clues missed by the human eye. These are much appreciated by collectors and these have protected them from being cheated. “Technology has made the trade much more open and fairer. And technology has been the best thing for collecting stamps,” James said.
【1】What makes collecting stamps special according to Graham Beck?
A.The delicate patterns on little pieces.
B.The paper types and printing features.
C.The cultural details attached to stamps.
D.The memories of collecting experiences.

A.Application.

B.Persuade them to employ online tools.
C.List the top stamps with collection value.

24、
As a senior, my future is always on my mind. To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future.
It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well.
This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like.
Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic.
One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.
Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for.
