二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“Federal weather forecasters are predicting a ‘near normal’ number of storms this hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 1. Between nine and 15 named storms are predicted to form in the Atlantic this year,” said Neil Jacobs, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“Of those, between four and eight are predicted to become full-blown hurricanes, with winds capable of removing shingles (木瓦) and taking down power lines,” Jacobs said Thursday at a news conference to announce the forecast. “And between two and four storms are expected to strengthen into so-called major hurricanes, with winds strong enough to break trees and tear off roofs.”

Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA, said people shouldn’t be fooled into satisfactions by the word “normal”. “Nine to fifteen named storms are a lot,” he said. “Two to four major hurricanes are a lot. So the key message is: We’re expecting a near-normal season, but you need to start getting prepared for the hurricane season now.”

This year’s outlook is shaped by two competing meteorological (气象学的) phenomena.

On one hand, the climate pattern known as El Nino (厄尔尼诺) is happening this year, which generally prevents hurricane activity in the Atlantic. At the same time, the water at the surface of the tropical Atlantic and the Caribbean is warmer than usual. That warm water acts like an engine for hurricanes, fueling their creation and making them bigger and wetter.

While ocean temperatures change under normal climate conditions, global warming is also causing ocean waters to get hotter. The overall global surface temperature has already risen more than I degree Fahrenheit compared with pre-industrial times. That suggests increasing hurricane risk, as big and wet storms become more likely.

【1】How many storms may take place in the Atlantic at least this year?

    A.4.

    B.9.

    C.15.

    D.24.

【2】What can be the effect of the full-blown hurricanes?

    A.Blowing off shingles.

    B.Destroying roads.

    C.Causing earthquakes.

    D.Taking down dams.

【3】What can we know from Gerry Bell’s words?

A.People were often fooled by the NOAA.

B.There will be less major hurricanes this year.

    C.There has been a near-normal hurricane season,

D.People should prepare for the coming hurricanes.

【4】What is the direct cause of hurricanes?

    A.El Nino phenomenon.

    B.The increasing population.

    C.Environmental pollution.

    D.Warmer water of the ocean.

  • 23、On the eve of our daughters’ weddings, I gave both of them what I considered to be excellent marital advice: never leave your husband unsupervised (无人监督的) with pruning shears (修枝剪).

If only I had taken my own advice. I recently let my guard down. Thirty-some years of marriage can do that to a woman. Give a man pruning shears and electric trimmers (电动修剪器) and he will give new meaning to “armed and dangerous.”

One day earlier this year, my husband said that the crab apple tree was dead.

“Why do you think it is dead?” I asked.

“Look at it. There’s not a leaf on it.”

“There’s not a leaf on anything. It’s March,” I said.

“It looked sick last fall and with this bitter winter we had, I’m convinced it’s dead.”

The truth is he’s never liked the crab apple. Sure, it has beautiful blooms in the spring, but then it gets a disease, the leaves curl, and it drops those little apples that sit on the driveway.

Each passing week he pronounced the tree dead. Eventually I began to believe him. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle in his eye. He armed himself a couple of weeks ago and began trimming. A branch here, a branch there, a small limb, then a large limb. I watched and then decided to check the wood on some of the branches closer to the trunk. I broke one off and saw green.

The crab apple was not dead. It just hadn’t had time to leaf out. The tree was now falling to one side, but it was not dead. I would have told him so, but he had moved on to a maple. Once the man starts, he can’t stop. One trim leads to another.

    “Please, stop!” I called.

He smiled and nodded, but he couldn’t hear because he had started the hedge (树篱) trimmers and was getting ready to fix a line of hedges.

    Zip (飕飕声), zip, zip.

“What do you think?” he shouted.

“It’s supposed to be a privacy hedge; now all that will be private are our ankles.”

He started the trimmers again. “Stop!” I called, “Come back!”

    “Why?” he shouted.

    “You’re in the neighbor’s yard.”

【1】By saying “if only I had taken my own advice.” the author means that _____.

    A. she should have kept a closer watch on her husband

    B. she feels regretful about her marriage after many years

    C. she didn’t follow her own advice about pruning shears

    D. she shouldn’t have given that marital advice to her daughters

【2】We can learn from the article that the author’s husband ______.

    A. has a great talent for gardening

    B. had never used pruning shears before

    C. mistook their crab apple tree for a maple tree

    D. nearly ruined their neighbor’s garden

【3】What does the article mainly talk about?

    A. Why husbands shouldn’t be left to trim trees alone.

    B. Why the author’s husband insisted on trimming their crab apple tree.

    C. How the author has survived her “thirty-some” years of marriage.

    D. How the author’s husband killed their crab apple tree.

【4】What is the tone of the article?

    A. Anxious.   B. Humorous.

    C. Serious.     D. Critical.

  • 24、When you hear “I have a dream…”, one of the most famous speeches in human history, you’ll never have the idea how the audience on the scene were fueled by emotional intelligence. When Martin Luther King. Jr. presented his dream, he chose language that would stir the hearts of his audience. Delivering this electrifying(震撼性的) message required emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions.

Emotional intelligence has been highly recommended by leaders, policymakers, and educators as the solution to a wide range of social problems. Emotional intelligence is important, but the uncontrolled enthusiasm has obscured (掩盖)a dark side. New evidence shows that when people sharpen their emotional skills, they become better at controlling others. When you’re good at controlling your own emotions, you can hide your true feelings. When you know what others are feeling, you can motivate them to act against their own best interests.

Social scientists have begun to document this dark side of emotional intelligence. In a research led by University of Toronto professor Jochen Menges, when a leader gave an inspiring speech filled with emotion, the audience was less likely to scrutinize (细察) the message and remembered the content. Ironically(讽刺 的是), audience members were so moved by the speech that they claimed to recall more of it.

The authors call this the awestruck effect, but it might just as easily be described as the dumbstruck effect. One observer reflected that Hitler’s persuasive impact came from his ability to strategically express emotions—he would “tear open his heart”—and these emotions affected his followers to the point that they would “stop thinking critically and just emote.”

Leaders who master emotions can rob us of our abilities to reason. If their values are out of step with our own, the results can be destructive. New evidence suggests that when people have self-serving motives, emotional intelligence becomes a weapon for controlling others.

Throwing light on this dark side of emotional intelligence is one mission of a research team led by University College London professor Martin Kilduff. According to these experts, emotional intelligence helps people disguise (伪装) one set of emotions while expressing another for personal gain. Professor Kilduff’s team writes, “The strategic disguise of one’s own emotions and the controlling of others’ emotions for strategic ends are behaviors evident not only on Shakespeare’s stage but also in the offices and corridors where power and influence are traded.”

Of course, people aren’t always using emotional intelligence for   nefarious ends. More often than not, high EQ is helpful in most aspects of our life. Emotional intelligence—like any skill—can be used for good or evil. So whether it is a gift or a curse lies in your hand.

【1】Why does the author mention Martin Luther King, Jr?

A.To honor the great leader for his courage.

B.To recommend his speech to other leaders.

C.To introduce the major topic to readers.

D.To advocate a society with fewer problems.

【2】Which of the following belongs to a dark side of emotional intelligence?

A.Developing the capability to control one’s own emotion.

B.Influencing people to do what brings disadvantages to them.

C.Appealing to the audience to concentrate and remember more.

D.Encouraging the moved audience to learn more of the speech.

【3】What is the dumbstruck effect of Hitler’s emotional intelligence?

A.His followers would tear open their hearts to him.

B.His followers would express emotions strategically.

C.His followers would lose the ability to reason properly.

D.His followers would develop the self-serving motives.

【4】How do people use their emotional intelligence for personal gain?

A.They disguise their true emotions and show another one.

B.They help their colleagues to build up confidence.

C.They present their strategic behaviors on the stage.

D.They lower their own dignity to gain popularity.

【5】Which may mean the same as the underlined word in the last paragraph ?

    A.Immoral.

    B.Unimportant.

    C.Illegal.

    D.Uncontrollable.

【6】What would be the best title for the passage?

    A.The benefits of emotional intelligence.

B.The advantages and disadvantages of emotions.

C.The reasons for using emotional skills.

D.The dark side of emotional intelligence.
