二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、"Liking" healthy foods on social media platforms like Facebook may encourage others to eat a balanced diet, new research has found.

For the study, the research team asked 369 university students to estimate the amount of fruit, vegetables, and sugary drinks their Facebook friends consumed on daily basis. They then cross-referenced this information with the participants’ own actual eating habits and showed that those who felt their online social circles"approved" of eating junk food (垃圾食品) consumed significantly more themselves,in fact, an extra portion (一份) of unhealthy snack foods and sugary drinks for every three portions they believed their online social circles did.

Conversely, those who thought their friends ate a healthy diet had more portions of fruit and vegetables. These habits could have developed from seeing friends' posts about the food and drinks they consumed, or simply a general impression of their overall health.

There was no significant link between the participants’ eating habits and their body mass index (体重指数), an indicator of weight. The researchers said the next stage of their work would track a participant group over time to see whether the influence of social media on eating habits had a longer-term impact on weight and overall health.

The researchers said the findings to date provide the first evidence to suggest our online social circles could be silently influencing our eating habits, with important implications for using social media to encourage healthy eating.

"With children and young people spending a huge amount of time interacting with influencers via social media, the important new findings from this study could help shape how we deliver interventions that help them adopt healthy eating habits from a young age, and stick with them for life," added Claire Farrow, director of Aston University' s Applied Health Research Group

【1】What did the researchers ask the participants about?

    A.Their body mass index.

    B.Their opinions on sugary drinks.

C.Their consumption of fruit and vegetables.

D.Their impression of their online social circles' diet

    【2】What might the study suggest?

A.We eat more junk food than expected.

B.We tend to overestimate our overall health

C.We copy the eating habits of our online friends

D.We like to compete with others on the Internet

【3】What does the underlined word "Conversely" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Additionally.

    B.Contrarily

    C.Unexpectedly

    D.Consequently.

【4】What might Farrow call on influencers to do?

    A.Stick with their life habit

B.Post more pictures of healthy foods.

C.Seek more diet advice from the young.

D.Help young people quit addiction to social media.

  • 22、I am proud to be a member of two cultures. Even though I am only ten years old, I have lived in two countries and in two cultures. I have lived in both Mexico and the United States.

I was born in the state of Michoacán. I was born in a small town called Quinceo. Life there was simple and peaceful. There was a small market where we would go on Sundays. There was a corral where we would go and watch rodeos. After school, my friends and I would go for a swim in a creek. My mom did not work; she stayed at home taking care of our family. Life in Quinceo was nice, but money was sometimes not enough to support us.

In 1996, the day came when my dad decided to bring us to the United States. Leaving my town was hard, but it was important that my family stay together. When I left Mexico, I had a lot of special friends and nice teachers.

When I first came to the United States, I started at a new school in Chicago. I found care and company at the school, among Hispanic people, my friends, and my teacher. She helped me all the time.

My education now is different from the one in Mexico. Here, I am studying in two languages. I feel very happy because I am able to communicate in two languages. In my case, speaking Spanish is an indication of my Mexican heritage. Speaking English is a symbol of my triumph and the struggles that I have as an immigrant in this country. Now that I have been here three years, I am proud to offer my help and support to people who need it.

I urge those who come from Mexico and other countries to learn English and to continue speaking their native language, too. It will help them reach out to others.

【1】What does the writer think of Mexico?

    A.She doesn’t like it because it’s poor.

B.She was too young to remember it.

C.She loves the country and is proud of it.

D.She wants to get rid of it so she left.

【2】Why did the family move to the US?

A.Because they were in need of more money.

B.Because the mother found no peace in Quinceo.

C.Because they wanted to experience a new culture.

D.Because the author could have new friends.

【3】Which of the following statements about the author is WRONG?

A.She wants to be a teacher and support people.

B.She enjoyed company of friends at the new school.

C.She enjoyed life in Mexico and also in the USA.

D.Her new school teaches in English and Mexican.

【4】The purpose of the passage is to ________.

A.explain how the author learns English well as a teen

B.help people to understand American immigrants better

C.introduce the life in her hometown Quinceo in Mexico

D.persuade immigrants not to drop their mother tongue

  • 23、Most of us have experienced being introduced to someone new only to forget his name within seconds. But why is it often easy to remember a person’s face but so difficult to remember what he’s called?

A new video explains that is due to the way our brains process random data. The video, called “why do you forget their name?” was produced by Mitchell Moffit and Greg Brown from YouTube channel AsapSCIENCE. The pair explained our brains are born to recognize facial details and that specific brain cells fire in response to seeing a face.

The University of Toronto, for example, found when looking for faces in a crowd the frontal cortex (额叶皮层)sends signals to the posterior visual cortex(后视觉皮层)to enhance what the person was looking at. But because names are random and hold no specific information in them, the brain struggles to remember them.

The video continued to show when meeting people for the first time, many of us focus on introducing ourselves and this is known as the “next-in-line effect”. Instead of watching and listening to the other person, the brain starts focusing on its own routine — what I’ll say and how I’ll say it. As a result, we’re not able to take in new information.

In an experiment by Texas Christian University, researchers asked people in a group to take turns introducing themselves. They then tested them to see which information they remembered. A participant’s memory was accurate for each fellow group member except for the person who spoke before them. For these people, the participants failed to recall any or little information.

Also, brains have both short and long-term memory and the short-term memory is often called “working memory”. This can only hold so much information and if the brain doesn’t focus, or repeat it, the information fades.

【1】Why are names hard to remember?

A.There is little detailed information in names.

B.Names are specific to each individual person.

C.The human brain responds to names too slowly.

D.Names are regarded as useless information.

【2】What do we know about the “next-in-line effect”?

A.It makes it hard to identify a person.

B.It causes a temporary loss of memory.

C.It worsens the ability to listen to others.

D.It blocks the reception of new information.

【3】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?

    A.Add some background information.

B.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    C.Explain the previous paragraph further.

    D.Provide another experiment for reference.

  • 24、No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids near Cairo. But a new study suggests they used a little rock ‘n’ roll. Long-ago builders could have attached wooden poles to the stones and rolled them across the sand, the scientists say.

“Technically, I think what they’re proposing is possible,” physicist Daniel Bonn said.

People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And there’s no obvious answer. On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away.

The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds (滑板). Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have lubricated the paths either with wet clay or with the fat from cattle. Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand.

Evidence from the sand supports this idea. Researchers found small amounts of fat, as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths.

However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way, who led the new study. West said, “I was inspired while watching a television program showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction. I thought, ‘Why don’t they just try rolling the things?’” A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides, he realized. That, he notes, should make a block of stone “a lot easier to roll than a square”.

    So he tried it.

He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground.

They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery (滑的) path.

West hasn’t tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn’t have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.

1It’s widely believed that the stone blocks were moved to the pyramid site by ___________.

    A. rolling them on roads   B. sliding them on smooth paths

    C. pushing them over the sand   D. dragging them on some poles

2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

    A. Rolling the blocks on wooden wheels.

    B. Rolling the blocks with poles attached.

    C. Rolling poles to move the blocks.

    D. Rolling the blocks with fat.

3Why is rolling better than sliding according to West?

    A. Because less preparation on paths is needed for rolling.

    B. Because rolling work can be done by fewer cattle.

    C. Because sliding on smooth road is more dangerous.

    D. Because more force is needed for sliding.

4What is the text mainly about?

    A. An experiment on ways of moving blocks to the pyramid site.

    B. An application of the method of moving blocks to the pyramid site.

    C. An introduction to a possible new way of moving blocks to the pyramid site.

    D. An argument about different methods of moving blocks to the pyramid site.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jared was a boy who was raised by his single father, Steve, and his grandfather Michael. Although he didn’t have much in life, Jared was grateful for what he had. He enjoyed living a simple life with his dad and grandfather.

After school, Jared would often go into his grandfather’s garage and they would repair his car together. Jared was a skilled mechanic and it was all thanks to his grandfather’s patient teaching. And Jared wished one day he would open a car repair shop using his grandfather’s garage. Michael supported it.

Unfortunately, Michael died when Jared was 14. Jared continued to look after his grandfather’s car. One day, his dad entered his room and handed him the key to his grandfather’s car. “Your grandpa wanted me to give this to you on your eighteenth birthday. He said you could decide what to do with the car—either sell it or keep it,” his dad said.

Jared smiled. He was thankful that he now had a car. And he was happy it was a special car that he and his grandfather maintained together. “I’ll keep it! I don’t have to take the bus to school anymore. I can just drive!” Jared replied excitedly.

Then Steve returned to his own room. He hoped Jared would not sell the car. And he hoped someday Jared would find the envelope Michael had secretly left for him. The envelope was put under the driver’s seat of the car. In the envelope, Michael left Jared $15,000. And he had left a note. It read, “I knew you wouldn’t sell my car. Thank you, Jared! I hope the money can help you. Be a good man!”

The following day, when Jared arrived at school, many students saw his car. They didn’t think highly of it because it was old and noisy. But Jared valued it. Later that day, after school, he couldn’t start the car. There appeared to be a problem with it.
