21、I did a crazy thing last weekend. I signed my family up for a six-mile hike out in the Yunmeng Mountains in Huairou District, Beijing.
Ever since we arrived in Beijing two years ago, my family has never walked around in any Beijing park for longer than two miles. I had signed up on Beijing Hikers’ hike several times before, but had always backed out at the last minute because of my son and husband’s protest. This time, I was not getting out of it!
When we woke up early on Saturday morning, it was raining cats and dogs. My husband turned to me and said, “Perfect hiking weather!”
But, I wasn’t backing down. If the other hikers thought that the weather was safe for hiking, then we were going! I did not regret even when our tour bus drove right into the heavy rain. Luckily, the rain stopped before we entered the mountains.
For the hike I had packed various snacks. When one treat stopped providing motivation for my 6-year-old son to put one foot in front of the other, I would turn to another to keep him moving. After I ran out of snacks, the guide cleverly asked him to look out for the red ribbons(丝带) that the Beijing Hikers use to mark the trail, and allowed him to collect them for her. This trick helped keep him moving for the first five miles of the well-kept road along the White River. However, the last mile was almost vertical(垂直的). While the kid had been moving like a snail for most of the walking part, he became a mountain goat when it came to the vertical climb. He actually led the group alongside the guide, leaving me and my husband far behind! We couldn’t even see him through the trees, and could only hear his merry voice carried by the wind.
Just then I turned to my husband and asked whether we would do it again. He replied, “I might feel much better if I were lying in bed dreaming about this hiking.”

22、My parents had been married less than two years when my dad was diagnosed with ALS. Making a decision regarding whether or not to start a family was difficult at the time, but due to their faith and positive outlook, they chose to do so. Had they not shared the same optimism, my older brother John would not be here, and I would not be writing this today. To say that I am thankful for their decision is an understatement. My dad has had a long battle with ALS and is still fighting after 26 years.
As a child, my parents did everything in their power to keep things as normal as possible for my brother and me. Unfortunately, I have very few memories of my dad when he was still able to walk because of how young I was when he lost that ability. However, I can confidently say that as a girl, my childhood felt completely normal. Our friends came over a lot. John and I were very involved in sports, and my parents were at every game.
ALS isn’t just a deadly disease — it is incurable. Most patients do not live even close to 26 years like my father has been able to. ALS is also a lonely disease, for both the patients and caregivers, as they go through hardships those around them will rarely understand. My mom is his primary caregiver, and my brother and I help out as much as we can. She is a remarkable mother and wife, the backbone of our family, and none of us would be here without her.
Dad is the strongest person I know. He has overcome his physical limitations due to how strong he is mentally. Every day is a battle, and every day he fights hard. He truly believes every day is a gift. Some days are worse than others, but he would rarely ley you know. It takes a certain kind of faith, will, ambition, and strength to handle such a desperate diagnosis, and he has never faltered (退缩).

24、According to the US economist Robert Gordon, all the “impressive stuff” has been created; we have run out of the big, life-changing ideas needed to encourage rapid economic growth and engineers are now only just making slight changes. Inventions such as mobile phones, Gordon says, have had less impact than, for example, the invention of indoor plumbing (管道系统).
But this is a misunderstanding of how engineers work. There is no “Wow!” moment. The development of new technology happens little by little. You build upon the work of those before you, thinking about what could be done better and what could be improved. It’s an unending task. Michael Faraday invented the first electric motor. But Faraday’s breakthrough followed William Sturgeon’s invention of the electromagnet (电磁铁), and Alessandro Volta’s invention of the battery before that. Faraday would have expected future engineers to pick up the baton (接力棒) later down the line.
Reduced energy supplies, increasing populations and mass urbanization keep clever young engineers awake at night. Those, for example, who enter the yearly James Dyson Award invent things that solve these problems and more. The 2012 winner Dan Watson designed a clever system of escape rings for fishing boat nets that deals with the issue of overfishing — not an exciting topic, but his invention is exceptional. Human inventiveness remains unreduced in the face of new global challenges.
Our problem is patience. We expect new technology at a rate like never before. I can’t tell you the world’s next big invention. Last week brought news that we’ve invented a new way to deal with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Next week may bring a major development in another field. The biggest thing holding invention back is our impatience. With enough time and support, bright young engineers will develop exciting new technology to solve the world’s trickiest problems. Many have already begun.
【1】Why does the author mention what Robert Gordon says?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To illustrate a new invention.
C.To provide background information.
D.To express his opinion about the topic.
【2】What can we infer from Michael Faraday’s example?
A.New technology has been developing step by step.
B.New inventions fail to deal with new global challenges.
C.Michael Faraday set a good model for William Sturgeon.
D.Technology helps future engineers achieve success smoothly.
【3】What makes Dan Watson’s invention excellent?
A.His young age.
B.His patience with technology.
C.His effort to solve real world problems.
D.His wish to win the James Dyson Award.
【4】Which word best describes the author’s attitude to technological development nowadays?
A.Doubtful.
B.Uncaring.
C.Disapproving.
D.Optimistic.
