二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Nearly everyone would agree that it is very hard to let go of anger after you have been hurt by someone. However, research shows that forgiveness is good for your health. It can give you more energy, help you sleep better. According to Dr Frederic Luskin, author of the book Forgive for Good, people who are able to forgive are less angry and more hopeful. “It can reduce the wear and tear on our bodies,” says Dr Luskin, “and allow people to feel more energetic.”

You are probably asking yourself, “How is it possible to forgive?” It is not easy, but here are some suggestions to try. When you have been hurt, first try to calm yourself down: breathe deeply and force yourself to think of something pleasant, such as someone you love or a beautiful sunset. Thinking about the hurt is of no use; it only gives power to the person who hurt you. Train yourself to see beauty, love and kindness in the world around you. Never wait for an apology, because you may be waiting forever. Very often the one who hurt you will never think of apologizing, either because they meant to hurt you or because they don’t understand your point of view. It can be very helpful to you to write yourself a letter, imagining what the other person’s perspective might be. Try to stand in his shoes to see the situation; you may realize that the hurt was a result of ignorance or fear — or maybe even love. Finally, remember that forgiving someone does not mean that you have accepted their action. It only means that you have chosen to let go of the hurt.

【1】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Forgiveness is possible for all people.

B.We should not wait for an apology.

C.When someone has hurt you, try to forgive.

【2】Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Forgiveness can make people feel more energetic.

B.People who forgive show less anger and more hope.

C.Forgiveness means you accept the hurting actions.

D.Being lost in hate may bring you deeper hurt and pain.

【3】What does the underlined phrase in the first paragraph mean?

    A.Damage.

    B.Energy.

    C.Waste.

    D.Sensitivity.

【4】How can you calm yourself when someone has hurt you?

A.Take deep breaths and think of something pleasant.

B.Learn to look for love, beauty and kindness around you.

C.Try to see things from the other person’s perspective.

    D.All of the above.

  • 22、For 30 years, Eddie Rankin has been driving his truck before dawn each Saturday, coming to create a treasured weekly routine for people who populated Woodley Park and who became his devotees.

The tradition ended Saturday, when Rankin unloaded his last truck filled with fresh fruit and vegetables.

“People will probably keep coming, but it won’t be the same,” said Kate Shawcross, one of Rankin’s first customers. “He knows your children’s names and where they go to school—he’s just the classic good neighbor, and here in Washington, we need some of that.”

Rankin was a farmers market pioneer, who got into farming by accident, said Bernadine Prince, executive director of FreshFarm Markets. Rankin is the co-owner of Twin Springs Fruit Farm and has witnessed the explosion of American interest in fresh produce and locally grown food.

“He’s just one of those people who are interested in you as an individual and your tastes,” said Bernadine Prince. “Think about when you go to the supermarket: Who do you talk to?   Nobody. ”

In 1984, a “farmers market” consisted of some peaches, apples and cherries that the typical American might have considered as overpriced. But Rankin drew customers charmed by his huge smile and agricultural knowledge. He remembered to set aside things you asked for, would cash your check if you needed bills and gave your 10-year-old child his or her first job.

The people who came to Saturday’s market sang to Rankin, presented him with poems about his influence on their lives and told stories of good deeds he had done for them.

Many described coming to Rankin's market as a routine in their lives.

Rankin said he is retiring because he wants to spend more time traveling to see his children and a sister back in Ireland. The children of one of Rankin’s partners are taking over Twin Springs.

He has a “fantasy,” he said, of using his knowledge to help fruit-growers elsewhere in the world.

He has faith that others can keep the Woodley Park market going, that the role of a farmers market is now established.

【1】People love Rankin mainly because he ________.

    A.cares about customers

    B.always appears on time

    C.sells cheap and fresh goods

    D.offers whatever customers need

【2】Why has Rankin decided to retire?

A.Because he wants to travel around the world.

B.Because it’s time for him to realize his fantasy.

C.Because he wants to have more time with his family.

D.Because it’s time for new generations to take charge.

【3】What’s the best title for the text?

A.Smile, when you meet each other

B.Goodbye, the apple of market’s eye

C.The big fish in the small-farmer pond

D.We need good neighbors in Washington

  • 23、   Just over a year ago I gave myself a challenge: give up spending on all but the essentials for a whole year. It hasn’t always been easy, but a year on I am wealthier and wiser. Embarrassingly, I have also realized just how much money I’ve wasted through mindless shopping and in the pubs and restaurants.

Free of any financial worries, I was spending without thinking. Stuck in a cycle of consumerism, I was struggling in vain to spend my way to happiness. Giving up spending for a year was an extreme approach, but I wanted to taste extreme frugality, shake up my spending patterns and overpay my mortgage instead of shopping. I could continue to pay my bills, including mortgages, broadband, phone bill, charity donations, life insurances, money to help my family and basic groceries.

It was not easy, especially in the first few months. There were lows, such as when I missed my favourite jazz concerts and hit films. There have also been some awkward moments when I’ve turned up to a friend’s house for dinner empty-handed. I did a lot of washing up at my friends’ houses in return this year.

I did find new ways to live, however. Using sites such as Eventbrite I have been to film screenings, wine tasting evenings and theatre productions for free. Living in London I have a wealth of free cultural activities on my doorstep and I’ve been to more art exhibitions this year than ever before. I even managed a free holiday, cycling the Suffolk and Norfolk coast and camping on beaches. It’s something I’d never done before and probably wouldn’t have, were it not for the challenge.

The last 12 months have taught me what things I really need. I can frankly say I’m happier now. I’ve gained confidence and skills, done things and met lovely people I wouldn’t have otherwise done or met.

1In the past the author wasted much money on the following EXCEPT   .

    A.purposeless shopping B.basic groceries

    C.restaurants D.pubs

2What is the purpose of the author’s no-spending challenge?

A.To change her former spending habits. B.To relieve financial worries.

C.To pay off her mortgage as soon as possible. D.To donate more to local charities.

3What do we know about the author during her no-spending year?

A.She did a lot of washing and cooking in pubs.

B.She tried cycling and camping for the first time.

C.She attended concerts and watched movies for free.

D.She explored more cultural activities in London.

4How does the author eventually feel about her no-spending year?

    A.It’s discouraging. B.It’s challenging.

    C.It’s rewarding. D.It’s embarrassing

  • 24、A last-minute vacation can be a wonderful surprise and an escape from the ordinary. It normally takes a weekend or a few days. You might think that a last-minute vacation will cost a ton of money.【1】

If you decide to take a last-minute vacation to an area you visit frequently, call your usual accommodations and see if they offer a favorable price to repeat customers. If you have met the manager on your earlier trips, ask to speak to him and explain your situation.【2】So it’s possible for you to get a great deal.

Some hotels will often have rooms that they cannot fill.【3】Talk carefully, and you may be able to persuade them into giving you a discount.

【4】Save on transportation costs to a destination nearby. Visit a town you’ve never been to before, or stay a few nights in a city that you only go to for day trips. Local escapes can be just as relaxing as flying to Hawaii for the weekend, and will probably give you more time at your destination.

Teenagers are often excited about the chance to get out of their parents’ house for a weekend. So contact any young cousin you can trust in the house while you are on vacation.【5】You just need to leave him or her easy instructions and some food in the fridge.
