二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Given the tradition of students bringing apples to their teachers, it somehow seems fitting that an old apple barn(谷仓)will find a new life as a one-room schoolhouse. And it is just as fitting that a retired schoolteacher will become the caretaker of that historic treasure.

My friend Velma, a teacher for more than 30 years, has been retired for some time now, but that doesn’t stop her giving history lessons at the old Englewood School, located on her family’s

California farm. The lovingly restored building was constructed around 1850 as a home for a woodsman and later was used as apple barn. Then, in 1870 it began a new life as a schoolhouse.

Originally located in the nearby Englewood meadow, it was now moved its current site in 1978 by Velma’s late husband and his brother, Robert and Richard, who thought it would help keep

Velma busy in retirement. No nails had been used in the original construction, so each piece of wood had to be carefully marked and the building was reassembled(重装)on its new site. The brothers worked with much care and hard work to ensure a perfect fit of mitered(斜接的)corners.

After the relocation, Velma and her family furnished the school with some of its original desks. They also added a collection of schoolbooks, the oldest dating back to 1845. Perhaps the school’s most cherished souvenir is the diploma of student Hettie Essig, who graduated on June 30, 1904. Hettie’s daughter, Flora, presented Velma with the precious keepsake.

Nowadays Velma gives tours to local schoolchildren and other groups, who learn what it was like to attend school back in the good old days. She has kids ring the school bell, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “Good Morning to You” as they might have done in days gone by. Then, with twinkling eyes and much enthusiasm, she tells the history of the school, and gives a short sample lesson.

1The Englewood School was originally built as __________.

    A. a man’ s house   B. a schoolhouse

    C. a restroom   D. an apple barn

2Which word can best describe the school’s being relocated?

    A. Inspiring   B. Refreshing

    C. fashionable   D. Challenging

3What does the underlined part “the precious keepsake” in Para.4 mean?

    A. The school’s original supplies

    B. The collection of schoolbooks

    C. The oldest schoolbook

    D. The diploma of Hettie Essig.

4Which can serve as the best title of the passage?

    A. The Good Old Days in the Schoolhouse

    B. A Mysterious Building with a Long History

    C. A Historic One-room Schoolhouse

    D. A Teacher Devoted to Restoring Old Buildings

  • 22、   Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to a new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter ...and it’s all because of technology.

“We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” said Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions(分心)too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites.

Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” said Julia Wood, from London. “Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.”

Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.”

But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says, “On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.”

1Why does the writer mention “goldfish”?

    A. To introduce background. B. To compare two species.

    C. To introduce a topic. D. To suggest a way out.

2What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker?

    A. Skipping around the internet. B. Time to digest information.

    C. Traditional methods of reading. D. Making decisions.

3What will help students overcome a short attention span?

    A. Composing music. B. Texting messages

    C. Reading more books. D. Watching quickie movies.

4What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly?

    A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable.

    C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.

  • 23、“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said each time I faced disappointment or even depression. “If you carry on, one day, something good will happen. And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”

Mother was right, but I didn’t realize that until I graduated from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio and then work my way up to be a sports announcer. I hitchhiked (搭顺风车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station — and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases, big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person. “Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.

While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.

But I wasn’t hired. My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best.” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!

On my way home, as I have had many times since, I thought of my mother’s words, “If you carry on, one day, something good will happen. It wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”

  • 24、Every year the European Commission awards the STARTS Prize to projects that combine artistic expression, technology and scientific research. This year’s shortlisted projects touched on topics ranging from simple technology to DNA data storage, but the final two Grand Prize winners both focused on environment and sustainability.

The Grand Prize in Innovative Collaboration went to “Remix El Barrio”, a cooperation between Anastasia Pistofidou, Marion Real, Fab Lab Barcelona and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia.

The project identified food waste streams in the Barcelona neighbourhood of Poblenou and worked with local restaurants and Fab Lab Barcelona to turn this waste into different materials. In this circular economy project, waste becomes a resource again. Twelve designers used these materials to create a variety of products, such as a jacket made from a material sourced from orange peels, or soap made with used cooking oils.

The other winner was “Oceans in Transformation”, which was awarded the Grand Prize for Artistic Exploration. In this project, Territorial Agency’s John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Rönnskog wanted to find a way to visualise the many different types of knowledge we have about the ocean.

Their work shows that scientific research is fragmented. Each research activity looks at one aspect of the ocean——sea level, for example, or biodiversity—and usually in just one location. That makes it difficult to get a broad overview of what exactly is happening with the oceans as a whole. To tackle this, “Oceans in Transformation” combined different research data to create a project that shows the wide variety of information that’s out there.

Both Grand Prize winners are reminders that issues related to environment and sustainability are often complex and affect many different communities. The solutions aren’t always just scientific. For example, scientists can find ways to turn food waste into new materials, but in practice restaurants and designers and consumers are all part of the solution as well. And while scientists are continuously collecting valuable data about the changing oceans, “Oceans in Transformation” showed that such data is meaningless unless people see it in context(背景).

【1】What can be inferred from paragraph 1?

A.The STARTS Prize is given to a specific field.

B.The STARTS Prize covers a very broad range.

C.The European Commission chooses one for the prize.

D.Only environment and sustainability are fit for the prize.

【2】Why does “Remix El Barrio” was awarded the prize?

A.It turns waste food into useful daily materials.

B.It collects data about the waste food in Poblenou.

C.It tells the importance of food to the Commission.

D.It invents a machine to collect waste food efficiently.

【3】What does the underlined word “fragmented” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Wonderful.

    B.Useless.

    C.Broken.

    D.Incorrect.

【4】What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Data about oceans are useful to all people.

B.Problems related to environment are simple.

C.Solutions to environment need more than techs.

D.It’s no good to turn food waste into new materials.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When the last customer left, it was already 10:30 pm. Eric, an 18-year-old college student in Atlanta, dragged himself home. In order to save money to buy himself the new mountain bike, he had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation. He already had 120 dollars. With one more week, he would have his dream bike.

Entering his room, Eric found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.

“Sorry, Eric. I ... I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.

    “What is it?”

“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside our house and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. White’s car. I was so scared and I ... I hurried home in panic without telling him.”

    “Is the car seriously damaged?”

“The ball hit the front hard and the left headlight of it got broken.”

“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you shouldn’t come back without telling Mr. Smith about it,” Eric raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.

“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. And it is too late today. We have to deal with it tomorrow. Now you just go to bed.”

When Bill went bed, Eric couldn’t go to sleep himself. Father always told him to be honest, to be a man respected by people and to be an example of his brother. He was sorry for his brother’s behavior. He shouldn’t have run away after he did something wrong. But he could understand him. Anyway, he was only a boy of seven and what had happened really scared him. But as his elder brother, he should do something about it although this may delay his plan of having the mountain bike. “Nothing serious, just another week in KFC,” he said to himself.
