21、Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins (来源) of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer (消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn’t have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local markets to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available (可购得的) in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import (进口) most of their food. This because they have difficult climates (气候). The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What’s wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces (减少) the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
【1】What is called “food miles” according to this passage?
A.The origins of the food.
B.The effects of long distances.
C.The journey from field to plate.
D.The disadvantages of imported food.
【2】Some countries, like the United Arab Emirates, have to import most of their food because of ________.
A.long distances

C.fresh and tasty food
D.modern technology
【3】The writer uses the LAST paragraph mostly to encourage readers to ________.
A.buy more local food
B.increase international trade
C.travel long distances

22、 Chinese students in the UK now can get a “taste of home” in their school canteens (餐厅).
The UK has 150 000 Chinese students and more than 89 000 of them are in higher education. Now college kitchens are adapting (修改) menus to provide Chinese food for these students.
In the last week of January, Scot Girvan, a cook at the University of Glasgow, introduced some new dishes more suitable for the Chinese taste.
The University Caterers Organization (大学备办食物组织) found that menus should fit Chinese students after the 11-day trip in September last year. During the trip, fourteen TUCO members visited Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. They learned that Chinese food was different in every place, and offering menu choices from both the north and the south of China was important. At Beijing University’s Nong Yuan canteen, for example, over 350 different dishes are prepared daily and 4700 lunches served.

23、Calling the police
Do you know what to do when there is an emergency? By calling the police, you can protect yourself and those around you.
CALL THE POLICE in all of the following emergencies:
◇ A crime, such as a theft, especially if it is still in progress (过程).
◇ A car accident, especially if someone is injured.
◇ Anything else that seems like an emergency.
You may also CALL THE POLICE when you see something suspicious (可疑的) in your neighbourhood:
◇ Someone you don’t know is frequently walking around in your neighbourhood. This could be a sign that the person is trying to break into a house.
◇ Someone is trying to open the doors of a car. This could be a sign that the person is trying to steal the car.
When you see something suspicious, do not suppose someone else has already called the police. People often hesitate to call the police for fear of danger. However, the police want to help prevent crime.
What should you do when you call the police? Dial 911(the U.S. emergency number; the number varies from one country to another — in China, you dial 110 to call the police). Stay calm when calling and give your name, address and phone number. Then, tell the person why you are calling (What happened? Where did it happen? When did it happen? Is it still in progress?). Follow any instructions you are given. For example, the dispatcher (调度员) might say, “Stay on the line,” or “Leave the building.”
If you dial the emergency number by mistake, do not hang up. Doing so could make the dispatcher think an emergency really exists. Instead, just tell the person that you called by mistake.
Most police departments have a communication centre. The communication centre staff reach police officers carry headsets, like earphones, to stay in touch with the communication centre.
