21、On December night, fire trucks arrived in the sleepy little town of Manton, Michigan and rushed to Chittle’s home. It wasn't because of a fire, or because a child climbed too high to a dangerous place. Instead, it was for helping make a dream come true.
Outdoor activities and a slow pace of life are a mainstay in this rural town. When the town went into lockdown, Scott Chittle decided the community needed for a safe place to come together and something joyful during the winter months. And what’s a better outdoor activity to get people outside than ice skating?
To make his dream a reality, Chittle downloaded instructions on how to build an ice rink(溜冰场) and then ordered a 3,000 square foot waterproof cloth and some wood to create walls online. It took 12 fire trucks to get enough water to fill the plot.
It took a little time and some neighborly persuasion as Chittle went door to door to convince people to come to see his creation, and soon Chittle's backyard ice rink became a Manton hot spot. Children were skating and shooting, a fire was burning, and hot chocolate was steaming in to-go cups. “When things were tough, it was a place,” says Chittle's neighbor Audrey Hooker. “It was fantastic because we just came together and became calm and happy instead of worried.”
But the goodwill didn't stop with Chittle. When the community heard how much money he used to make this project happen, everyone stepped forward. A fundraiser brought in about $ 1,300, and letters were sent to Chittle’s home stuffed with cash. “Almost 30 complete strangers knocked on my door to just shake my hand and say thank you. Most of them handed me money as well. Three of them asked for a hug,” says Chittle. “This has been a community thing. It's not just me. I want to show the rest of the world what a little effort and the best intentions can do.”

22、In the office of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, there is a picture of Catherine the Great, the legendary Russian Empress. When asked why she has the picture, Merkel says, “She was a strong woman”. Many say the same of Merkel.
The most powerful woman in the world, according to US Forbes magazine, was in China last week. She came to discuss trade and environmental issues with China’s top leaders. Germany’s first woman leader is known as a brave and practical statesman(政治家). Even since her time at school, she had the habit of getting everything in order. Every day before doing her homework she would clean the desk and think about what to do next. “I prefer a long time for full preparations to make my decision. But once I decide, I will stand up for what I believe,” Merkel said.
Perhaps it was good habits that helped her do well in her studies. At 32, she got a doctorate (博士学位) in physics and then she worked as a researcher.
However, the life of a scholar couldn’t put off her love of politics. While working in labs, Merkel took time off to read political books and at last joined a political party. “Her calmness helped her stand out in the party. She could always find a way out while others felt hopeless,” said one of her old friends.
In her first big political job as Minister for the Environment in 1994, her scientific background proved very useful. In 2005 she became Germany’s youngest chancellor since the second World War.
Now half way through her four-year term, the 53-year-old woman has made a name for herself both in Germany and abroad. At the EU summit in 2005 when France quarreled with Britain over the EU budget(预算), some people believed the EU was close to breaking down. But Merkel didn’t give up. She shuttled(穿梭) between the heads of the two powers and had them reached an agreement.
“Strength comes from composure(镇定) and courage. Many people say I am a strong woman. But I would rather say I have perseverance,” said Merkel.
【1】Why does Merkel put a picture of Catherine the Great on the wall of her office?

24、Getting more followers is something we usually associate with social media or micro messaging apps. But soon we could all have a new type of follower—a robotic one.
Dozens of robots and technology fans gathered in Boston, US, earlier this month for the Robot Business conference. The latest developments in the world of robotics were shown to the public, and this time the trend was robots following people.
Perhaps the most exciting development on show was the ability of drones (无人机) to follow you from the air, acting as your own personal cameraman or photographer. One example is 3-D Robotics’ Iris+ drone, developed by a US-based company.
The drone is fitted with cameras and has a “follow me” function. It connects with your GPS-enabled Android device, like a mobile phone. Then it flies and follows you around, shooting action film of you from above. The software in the drone makes sure that you’re always in the center of the frame.
It can keep working for 15 minutes, as long as there aren’t too many trees for it to crash into. This could be exciting for anyone who loves action sports or wants to be the star of their own short film.
But what if you want to be one of those celebrities (名人) who have helpers carrying all their bags and doing all their chores? A robot called Budgee can help.
Budgee, made by 5 Elements Robotics, is literally a basket on wheels. It is designed to help elderly and disabled people, or simply anyone who doesn’t have enough arms for grocery bags, Wired magazine reported. It can carry up to 22.7 kg of items.
To make Budgee follow them, its owner will have to wear a small device and use an app to set the distance between themselves and the robot.Budgee even sends a text message when it can’t keep up with its owner.
“I want you to look at the robot like he’s your buddy, he’s your friend. There’s a relationship you develop with the robot,” Wendy Roberts, CEO of 5 Elements Robotics, told gigaom.com.
It might not be quite the same as robotic assistants we’ve seen in movies such as Disney’s Wall-E, where robots cater for our every need, but that idea doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched now.
