London exceeds Paris and Berlin , however ( both 16), and is the same as Lisbon (also 12).
Stockholm was the first city to be crowned European Green Capital in 2010---and it clearly hasn’t rested on its great honors . Today we’ll talk about reading．When we read a text，our eyes move across a page in short，quick movements．We recognize words usually when our eyes still fixate(停留，凝视)．Each time they fixate，we see a group of words．This is known as the recognition span or the visual span(视幅)．The length of time for which the eyes stop varies from person to person．It also varies within any parson according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text．In addition，it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.
Unfortunately，in the past，many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the page．As a result of this misleading emphasis(强调)on the purely visual aspects of reading，many exercises have been designed to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation．For example，in some exercises，words are flashed on to a screen for a tenth of a second．One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point，taking in the words on either side．Such word patterns are often formed in the shape of pyramids(金字塔)，so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive（连续的）fixation．All these exercises are very clever，but it' s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words．Consequently，for these reasons，many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training，especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated(孤立的)words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text．

23、It was 3:34 in the morning. Suddenly the bed moved a little. I woke up. That bed used to move a lot so I just thought it was my wife rolling over. I looked over to her and she was fast asleep.

Luckily, the violent shaking gradually slowed down and then stopped. I could finally walk to our children’s room. My wife had been standing over them during the strongest part of the earthquake, making sure nothing fell on them.
After such a big earthquake, we expected the “smaller” aftershocks to be still very strong. There was still a chance that the building could collapse. So we woke the kids up, got some basic things and started to walk down the emergency stairs all 22 floors of them.
When we finally arrived at the ground floor many other people had already arrived, some in pajamas(睡衣), some half-dressed. The good news was everyone got out of the building safe and sound.

24、 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is the biggest ticketed cultural event in The Netherlands. It aims to offer some good worldwide independent, innovative cinema and visual arts. One can visit cinema-related exhibitions and events, go to film screenings, or take part in the extensive professional programme. To make all of this happen, IFFR relies on the support of close to a 1000 devoted volunteers every year. Want to be part of the team? You can read all about our volunteer opportunities below.
How to sign up
You can sign up to volunteer by filling in the online registration form. If you have volunteered with us before, you will receive an email invitation to re-apply for the upcoming edition. As soon as we have more information on any openings for this year, we’ll get in touch with you to schedule a training meeting.
What do we expect from you?
In order to volunteer at IFFR, you’ll need to:
Be 18 years or over
Have a good understanding of either the Dutch or English language
Have an EU passport or Dutch residence permit
Be available for a minimum of 28 hours during the festival period
The majority of your shifts will be during the festival itself. However, depending on the position you’ll fill, there might be additional shifts scheduled before the festival or after.
We expect all volunteers to make their own arrangements in terms of travel and accommodation. Unfortunately we’re not able to cover any expenses at this point.

We’d like to ask volunteers to sign up in the spirit of supporting the festival. Now, more than ever, we’ll need your help in carrying out the vision of IFFR and in providing a platform for stories and voices from all over the world.
