二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Congratulations! You’ve gotten to college, and now you never have to read another book in your life! 【1】 Instead of a book being something you have to read, think about college literature classes as your opportunity to get to read. Here are some ways to get the most out of the literature class.

Take a lecture course. 【2】 Even if you haven’t taken other literature courses, specialized lectures can be a great place to start. If you’re considering a literature lecture, consider one on a single author, or a single genre, or a single time period. Even if you don’t come in with a lot of background knowledge, that’s okay, because the topic is narrow enough so that you can launch right into the material without mastering everything under the sun first.

【3】 Don’t just rely on your friends for this; instead, you should turn to people who are juniors and seniors in departments with a lot of literature courses and ask them which professors they’ve had very positive experiences with.

Take a literature class with a book on the syllabus that you’ve read before but hated. You know you should like The Sound and the Fury, which you read in junior year of high school. But somehow, you just couldn’t get into it then. Or you knew that Walt Whitman is supposed to be great, but you’ve never clicked with “I Hear America Singing.” This is your opportunity to re-discover the books and authors that you’ve completely written off. 【4】

In short, don’t be afraid to take a college literature class. 【5】 Instead, give yourself a chance to explore!

A.All the excuses are just getting in the way.

B.But don’t be afraid to take a specialized lecture.

C.You might find something in them that you love after all.

D.But that’s exactly the opposite of what books can do for you in college.

E.Don’t be frightened by the fact that you have nowhere to hide — embrace it!

F.Take a small seminar, even if you’ve never taken a college literature course before.

G.Ask people who are majors in humanities departments to recommend professors to you.

  • 23、   For many of ussummertime means road trips to the beach or mountainsor at the very least some additional dust and bird poop on the exterior of our vehicles. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two thingswash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment?

The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water being used and the types of chemicals used to remove the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at homesays Katy Greshspokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to put aside a set amount of water for the entire wash.“It’s just like brushing your teeth”she says.“You don’t want to leave the water running or use more than you need for the job.” But even following this advice comes with an environmental riskWashing your car in the driveway or street flushes the dirty water into storm drains.

John Schombert is executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather. His organization works to educate the public about storm sewers(下水道) and water runoffkeeping this untreated water from entering the Allegheny region’s waterways.“We ask people to consider washing their cars on lawns or other permeable(透水的) surfaces where the water gets absorbed”Schombert says.“Soil can break down and help filter(过滤) those things”Schombert says.“Storm sewers are not made for waste disposal.”Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their carswhich Schombert says are probably ineffective at breaking down grease anyway.

The commercial car wash down the street knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in storm sewers.According to the International Carwash Association(ICA)professional car washes must use water reclamation systems. These mandated processes not only keep the dirty water out of storm sewers and regular water treatment systemsbut they also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.

B.Which Is BetterCar Wash or DIY?

C.Why Dishwashers Are Better than Hand Washing?

  • 24、You can learn anything on the Internet, so why do I so often learn things I don't want to know? When I'm surfing the web, I want to be drawn in by articles on Europe's political history or the nature of the outer space, but I end up reading trivia (琐事) such as a menu from a Netherlands prison. Why am I not curious about the things I want to be curious about?

Curiosity feels as if it's out of your control, and trying to direct it sounds as challenging as forcing yourself to find a joke funny. But if you understand what arouses curiosity, you may be able to channel it a little better. Across evolutionary time, curious animals were more likely to survive because they learned about their environments; a food hunter that occasionally skipped a reliable feeding ground to explore might find an even better place to eat.

Humans, too, will give up a known payoff to explore the unknown. In one experiment, subjects were asked to choose one of four photos, each carrying some chance of paying a cash prize. Photos repeated, so subjects learned to pick the best-paying, but when a novel photo popped up, they chose it more often. This preference for something novel is, of course, the reason manufacturers constantly make changes to product packaging and advertising. But it's good to know about your environment even if it doesn't promise a reward right now; knowledge may be useless today but vital next week. Therefore, evolution has left us with a brain that can reward itself; satisfying curiosity feels pleasurable, so you explore the environment even when you don't expect any concrete payoff. Infants prefer to look at novel pictures compared with familiar ones. Preschoolers play longer with a mechanical toy if it's difficult to deduce how it works.

【1】Why does the author ask the two questions in paragraph 1?

    A.To seek solutions.

    B.To introduce the topic.

    C.To present his curiosity.

    D.To express his amazement.

【2】What can be learned about curiosity?

    A.It's of great value.

    B.It's mostly under control.

    C.It rarely exists in animals.

D.It sometimes appears as a joke.

【3】What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.People make explorations for concrete payoff.

B.Curiosity guarantees people a pleasurable life.

C.The constant changes meet manufacturers' demand.

D.People would rather satisfy curiosity than get payoff.

【4】What does the underlined word "deduce" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Show off.

    B.Figure out.

    C.Bear in mind.

    D.Pick up.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at a school. One particular sixth grader, Pablo, was struggling with fluency in reading, so after class I suggested that he get extra practice by reading aloud to his mom while she prepared dinner each evening. This was something I routinely encouraged my struggling students to do. Imagine my surprise when Pablo responded by starting to cry. He said, “My mom can’t cook dinner!” Then he cried harder. Eventually, he calmed down enough to tell me that his mom was only able to “cry in her bed” when he got home every afternoon. He said that he was caring for his six-month-old baby brother by himself from the time he got home each day. His mother, it seemed, had a bad tooth and was in extreme pain. He said that his father didn’t have enough money to get it fixed, and that there was no way for her to go to a dentist. This child’s heart was broken for his mom.

I was speechless! He was still crying when he left me that day, and I promised him I would try to help. I kept asking myself how I could help this student. How could I help his mother when we didn’t even speak the same language?

The next day, I sent a note, which a friend helped me translate, to Pablo’s mother asking if she would like me to find someone to help her. The following day, Pablo brought me a note from his mom accepting my offer to help.

Meanwhile, I had been doing some networking among my friends asking if anyone knew a dentist who might do some free work for this lady. At the time, I was not able to pay for the work to be done myself. Several friends suggested a dental office that had recently opened up in the area, thinking that they might be willing to provide the services. I didn’t want to waste a lot of time going to several dentists, so I prayed that this would be the one.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Stopping by the dental office, I went to the reception desk.
