  • 21、Can the way you sleep affect your eating habits?

Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night, yet about 35% of Americans routinely miss the mark. 【1】

It may help you control your added sugar intake

Got a sweet tooth? 【2】. A 2018 study looked at the impact of extra sleep on eating habits with some participants who were healthy yet frequently slept between five to seven hours per night. One group was arranged to receive a 45-minute counseling (咨询) session with information about sleep recommendations and simple strategies to help them sleep more. Those who received the sleep advice lowered their added sugar intake by 10 grams per day, even though they didn’t hit the recommended sleep target of seven to nine hours per night.

    【3】

If you’re not sleeping well, it will be harder to manage desires. Researchers found that after a short night of sleep, people who looked at images of unhealthy food, such as doughnuts and candy, experienced increased activity in areas of the brain associated with reward and pleasure. Meanwhile, the same brain hot spots showed a significantly weaker response to healthy food.

    It contributes to overeating

When you get inadequate sleep, you feel hungrier. Plus, it’ll take longer to feel full because of lower leptin (瘦蛋白) levels. 【4】. It was found in a 2019 study among women who usually slept seven to nine hours per night that after they were instructed to get a third less sleep, they reported feeling hungrier and having increased appetite the next day.

【5】. Those who received counseling increased their sleep by about 1.2 hours, and they reduced their daily calorie intake by 270 calories. The researchers predicted that, the impact of extra sleep alone could result in a 26-pound weight loss over three years. Therefore, those who got more sleep naturally cut down on their calorie intake.

    A.Getting adequate sleep may help

B.The impact of extra sleep was dramatic

C.It could make you less vulnerable to desires

D.Here’s how sleep influences your eating habits

E.It could help slow down the burning of calories

F.Unsurprisingly, this could lead to serving yourself bigger portion sizes

G.People who suffer from consistently bad sleep tend to have poorer quality diets

  • 22、Julian Murphy has had a successful week. He’s the headmaster of an independent school called Loughborough Amherst school and he seems a bit media-friendly. Do you know what I mean? Those media-friendly headmasters? They’re regularly announcing something and not just in school — in the media. They pop up with some teaching thing: maths should only happen after lunch or they’re replacing physics with farming lessons. Anthony Seldon and Eric Anderson were the pioneers — always ringing up with a theory instead of standing in a playground with a coffee and a whistle.

Murphy first got round to being media-friendly back in 2017 when he said he was getting rid of school reports. His reasons were, he told the Independent, that “they end up using almost politician’s speak, using the same phrases such as ‘very lively and enthusiastic in lessons’, which of course actually means they don’t behave well in class”, and that some teachers, “let’s say PE or maths teachers — find writing 200-word long reports quite challenging”.

I quite like his style. He tells it like it is. Well, actually, not any more he doesn’t. Last week’s theory was a bit different. He’s banned staff, he explained to a newspaper, from using the words “good” and “bad” to refer to pupils’ behaviour. Instead, they should say “skilful” and “unskilful”.

One famous presenter tweeted in reply: “What on earth will these poor kids do when they’re exposed to the real world? This is so... BAD.” This suggests that the most sensible way for a school to prepare its students for the big wide world is simply to copy it. The “sink or swim” approach. “Look at those poor cosseted(宠爱)kids wearing armbands(充气臂圈).” “In the real world no one’s going to carefully explain to you how to read!” But, surely, the fact that people are often rude, and sometimes violent and criminal, in the real world doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a sound idea to encourage those things inside a school.

This is how Murphy explained his new rule: “While I don’t want teachers to be soft, I also don’t want them to be shouty and make pupils feel guilty. I think it’s human psychology — if people make you feel guilty, then you get angry.” I think I agree with that.

Still, in the long run, I’m not sure it’ll do any lasting skilful. Words quickly change their meanings and schoolchildren are a major driver of that. Playgrounds have taken every polite expression for disability ever invented and almost instantly weaponised them as terms of abuse between all kids. It won’t be long before “unskillful” is ruder than “bad” ever was. Rudeness, like life itself, will find a way.

【1】What does the writer think of Antony Seldon and Eric Anderson?

A.They had a lot of theories

    B.Their schools were poorly run

    C.They were media-friendly

    D.They were pioneers in teaching

【2】What does Murphy think of school reports?

    A.They are challenging to read

    B.They are lively and enthusiastic

C.They give teachers too much work

    D.They are of little use

【3】What is the writer’s attitude towards the famous presenter’s opinion

    A.Opposed

    B.Neutral

    C.Uncertain

    D.Supportive

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph about playgrounds?

    A.Kids often use weapons

    B.Disabled kids are always bullied

    C.Rude language is common

D.Kids like to discuss words’ meanings

  • 23、   He has been called France’s youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte. Emmanuel Macron, age 39, swept to victory in France’s second-round of presidential election which was held on May 7, 2017. He defeated Marine Le Pen by a large margin of 62% of votes. He was inaugurated (就职) as President.

Both of Macron’s parents were doctors, and he attended one of the most prestigious (有声望的) schools in France, Lycee Henri . From there, he became an investment banker and economy minister. Unlike the other presidential candidates, he has always worked outside of the government.

In April 2016, he created his own political movement, called En Marche! (On the Move!), recruiting (招募) more than 20,000 members. His party’s ideals were neither right-or left-winged, but more independent. As his party became more and more successful, Macron began to think about presidency, something he’d always been interested in. In November 2016, he announced his decision to run in the 2017 election.

Macron’s campaign relied on his political movement. He struggled to win votes from both parties in France, as well as from the working class. In addition, he was the only candidate that was pro-EU, or supportive of European Union.

While in office, Macron’s biggest focus will be on improving the economy. A total of €50 billion will be dedicated to job training and creating green and sustainable energy. Macron also plans to cut down on corporate taxes, improve the public education system, and lower the unemployment rate by 2.7%.

Following the election is the selection of the president’s cabinet (内阁). The Prime Minister position was given to Edouard Philippe, mayor of Northern Le Havre. However, Macrons cabinet is surprising—one France has never seen before: a gender-balanced cabinet. Out of the 22 seats available, 11 will be taken by women and 11 will be filled by men. This percentage is much higher than other European countries.

With each change of leadership come new ideals and changes to the country. Macron needs a parliament (议会) that will support his hopes and dreams for the future of France.

1What did Macron work as before the election?

    A.A manager. B.A teacher.

    C.A doctor. D.A banker.

2According to the text, Macron ________.

A.founded his party for presidency B.had no interest in politics before election

C.was on behalf of the working class D.was a supporter of EU

3What is the biggest challenge for Macron?

    A.Economy. B.Politics.

C.The private education system. D.The gender discrimination.

4What is special about Macron’s cabinet?

A.Its members are all from his party.

B.It has more women members than other European countries.

C.Most of its members are men.

D.It has chosen a woman as the prime minister.

  • 24、Wearing his bright red armband and speaking fluent Mandarin, from a distance 62-year-old Gao Tianrui could be taken for any regular Chinese man.

But on closer inspection, things are not quite what they seem:Gao’s real name is Terry Crossman and he is from the United States. Having lived in Beijing for more than20 years, Terry Crossman has finally fulfilled his Chinese dream: becoming a public security volunteer. Life as a “Xicheng Dama” has even made him an online celebrity.

Xicheng Dama are volunteers, usually women in late middle-age, who roam(闲逛) the streets of downtown Beijing’s Xicheng district. And now Crossman has joíned their club. He is seen giving tourists directions, getting water for a baby and even helping a neighbor sell yogurt.

“I like helping others,” he said. “I live in the hutong and my neighbors and I usually help each other… This is where I live, where my friends are and where I call home.”

Crossman became interested in Chinese culture as a teenager. At 18, he took a ship to Taiwan to learn Chinese. On the ship the captain suggested that he should have a Chinese name.“He named me Gao Tianrui,”he said.

Crossman and his family moved to Beijing in 1997. His parents separated when he was young, and he lived in many different places in the US, so he never felt like he had a regular home there. “I had no hometown in the United States,”he said. “Your home is where your things are. In this sense, Beijing is my home.”

He can often be found chatting with local people, especially taxi drivers. During his leisure time, Crossman teaches people English. Currently he is helping employees at a cafe near his home, telling them how to say useful words such as“set meal” and “discount”.

In March, Crossman met Liu Xiaoxia, who helped him get into volunteering. “He asked me to give him a red armband—the symbol of the volunteers.” Liu said, and Crossman is proud of his.

“In different periods I had different lives:married life, life with children and life alone,”he said. “Now I just enjoy living here.”

【1】What does Crossman need to do as a Xicheng Dama?

    A.Pretend to be Chinese.
