21、 “Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” ---Jeff Bezos.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't, and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I admired very much. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said. “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but eventually, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

22、Currently, New Zealand’s government announces it will help pay for poorer families to replace their old cars with cleaner hybrid (混合动力的) or electric ones. The government says it plans to spend $357million on the test program.
The move is part of a wider plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions(排放物). Greenhouse gases are believed to cause warming temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere. New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035.The government also plans to provide food-waste collection for most homes by 2030.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said in a statement, “We’ve all seen the recent reports on sea level rise and its influence right here in New Zealand. We cannot leave the issue of climate change until it’s too late to fix.” The plan is a step toward New Zealand’s stated goal of reaching net-zero(净零)carbon emissions by 2050.
Reaching net-zero emissions means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. Ardern said that reducing dependence on traditional fuels would help protect families from extreme price increases. The plan also sets a goal of reducing total car travel by 20 percent over the next 13years. The programs will be paid for from a $2.8 billion climate emergency response fund.
Officials said that over time, money collected from polluters would pay for the programs rather than taxes from families. Some critics of the plan say it continued to be less restrictive on New Zealand’s huge agriculture industry. Agriculture creates more than half of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But it is also important to the economy as the nation’s biggest export earner.
David Seymour is the leader of New Zealand’s ACT political party. He said that some of the announced programs were proven to be ineffective and had been tried and failed overseas. Seymour added that people should be able to choose how they reduce emissions through the market-based emissions trading plan.

23、Ask anyone who lives in an apartment in a crowded city and they’ll likely tell you space is their biggest problem. Those living in even smaller rooms know the headache well. Boston-based start-up Ori is out to solve it with a system that uses robotics and apartment furniture to change small spaces in seconds.
The company’s new system is also called Ori, which is named for the Japanese word “origami”, the art of folding paper. The new system makes your furniture change small space from living rooms into bedrooms and even workspaces with the push of a button.
Ori comes from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab, which helps companies create a better future for people. Ori is working with developers Boston Properties, Skanska and Samuels Associates to install (安装) the furniture in high-end apartments in Boston. It is working with designer Yves Béhar on the furniture designs.
The Boston models are being rented on Airbnb, an online company offering people rentals, so Ori can collect information about what users think of the system and improve it in the future. “The system will be put on the market in the near future,” said founder and CEO Hasier Larrea.
All of Ori’s product is made in the United States, and the furniture is actually more expensive to make than the robotics. Assembly (组装) is simple — the units can be put together in just a day. The biggest challenge for this team is making the system feel and look personal.
“We have created these amazing robots with amazing abilities,” Larrea said. “But when you bring a system into a home, it can’t look like a robot.”

24、 One spring, my aunt taught my sister, Lucy, and me how to fly the kite.
After trying in vain to make the kite fly by dragging it along the ground, I turned to my sister for help. Lucy very kindly took it up and tossed it into the air, but the kite fell down again due to my neglecting to run off at the same time. My aunt asked us to try again. Lucy once more took up the kite. However, I, who was in too great a hurry, ran off so suddenly that I pulled the kite out of her hand and it fell down to the ground again. “Who was to blame now?” asked Lucy, dropping herself to the ground in anger.
My aunt didn’t say anything and demanded another attempt. We did it with more care this time. Unfortunately, a sudden side wind was coming, Lucy let go the kite, which was blown against some bushes, leaving the poor kite hanging with its head downward. My aunt came to our rescue and rolling up the tail from the tree, my aunt led us to find a more open space to try again. Lucy tossed the kite up just as I ran off. It rose up and danced unsteadily in the air for a few seconds and then down came the kite to the ground like a frustrated lonely boy.
“A few disappointments ought not to discourage you. I have wound up your string and now try again” my aunt said patiently. And we did try and succeed. The kite was carrying upward on the breeze like a merry feather. Holding fast to the stick and gazing on the kite, Lucy and I stood in great delight and excitement.
If my aunt hadn’t persuaded us to try again, we would have given up flying the kite. It was after this unforgettable experience that I began to appreciate the value of perseverance. Whenever I fail in my attempts to do any good thing, I let my motto be ‘try again’.
