22、Some young people win distinction because of their good looks, their dance moves or their singing ability. A much smaller number gain fame because they have done something significant and worthwhile with their abilities. Rishab Jain is among the latter. In 2018 at the age of 13, he developed a way to use artificial intelligence to help pancreatic (胰腺的) cancer patients. Rishab’s “Pancreatic Cancer Deep Learning System” won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and its $25,000 prize.
Rishab explains that a family friend died of cancer. Then he learned about how deadly pancreatic cancer is, and that its low survival rate is due to how difficult it is to treat. “I’m also into programming, so I was learning about artificial intelligence. I decided to combine the two areas to try to solve a real-world problem using artificial intelligence.”
Rishab has invested his winnings in farther research and in his nonprofit Samyak Science Society. Samyak helps poor children enter the STEM. Rishab is also raising awareness about pancreatic cancer. Many kids would have simply blown their prize money on a fast car or some other shallow things. Rishab has also put some money aside to further his own learning. He is considering becoming a biomedical engineer or a doctor — or both.
How did Rishab become the one that he is? It helped that his father is an engineer. And he has been inspired by his brother and other relatives who work and do research in the medical field. He’s seen how STEM jobs have given them “the opportunity to make immediate differences in people’s lives.” That’s an outstanding outlook for one so young. Rishab is providing his teenage peers with a much-needed model of what kinds of things youth can accomplish.

23、Machine ethics is a new field of research that aims to develop moral machines. It's all about creating machines that can make moral decisions based on computer technology. If artificial intelligence (AI) is to be used in the context of machine ethics, then similarly one can all it "Artificial Morality" (AM).
While AI's goal is to model people's cognitive abilities, AM is about equipping artificial systems with the ability for moral judgment and action.
One field of application for moral machines is the care of the elderly. Systems to be used in this context face moral choices like "should the system monitor the user around the clock and what should be done with the data collected?" It is about the privacy of the user and the care of the relatives. A second example of the need for moral machines is autonomous driving. Of particular difficulty are the moral dilemmas that may be encountered, such as the need to decide whether to sacrifice a small number of lives to save a larger number if unavoidable.
It could be argued, however, that it is not the care system or the autonomous car that make a moral choice in these cases, but the programmers of those devices. But as the advances in artificial intelligence become greater, developers are less able to plan and predict what decisions a system will make in a specific situation. For example, AlphaGo Zero, which first knows only the basic rules of the game Go and then finds the optimal decision-making strategies by playing through a large number of games against itself. In no time, this system beat its predecessor AlphaGo, the first artificial system to defeat some of the world's top human Go players.
Therefore, it is necessary to develop machines that have a degree of autonomous moral decision-making though the ethical basis of artificial systems is still not clear. Research groups in academia and in the industry should start thinking about the relevance of ethics and safety in AI.
【1】Which of the following is true about AM?
A.It is a moral decision based on technology.
B.It aims to imitate people's cognitive abilities.
C.It enables AI to make moral decisions.
D.It gives advice to human on making decisions.
【2】How does the writer illustrate the uses of AM?
A.By analyzing cause and effect.
B.By raising questions.
C.By mentioning its advantages.
D.By giving examples.
【3】What does the writer say about the programmers behind moral machines?
A.They are the one virtually in charge of the machines
B.They are incapable of predicting decisions of the system.
C.They are the ones who advance artificial intelligence.
D.They can find the best decision-making strategies.
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.Can and should machines act morally?
B.How and why machines make moral decisions?
C.What AM is and how it is influencing us?
D.How AM works and where its future lies?
24、Inside the white, bacteria-free walls of a new building on the southern outskirts of Beijing, two employees wearing masks and rubber gloves are busy injecting a clear, colorless liquid into rows of small bottles.
The 215,000 square feet production plant was built in recent months specifically for producing a Covid-19 vaccine (疫苗) developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech.
CoronaVac, the vaccine candidate from Sinovac, is part of China’s push to be at the forefront of rolling out immunizations (免疫接种) against the deadly novel coronavirus.
The Nasdaq-listed biotech company began developing its vaccine in late January, less than a week after Wuhan—the original epicenter of China’s coronavirus outbreak—went into a strict lockdown.
By June, China had largely contained the coronavirus, dealing with only a small number of outbreaks. Those newly reported Covid-19 cases in China didn’t meet the necessary conditions for a Phase 3 trial, so Sinovac reached an agreement with Brazil—which ranks second in the world for infections, with more than 3.6 million reported cases.
In cooperating with the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo, a Phase 3 study was launched in late July involving 9,000 volunteers, all health professionals who have worked with Covid-19 patients but haven’t been infected with the virus.
The tests are ongoing, but Dimas Covas, president of the Butantan Institute, said Wednesday primary data shows CoronaVac developed immunity in 97% of the people vaccinated after two doses—a level he said was “fundamental to break the chain of transmission of the coronavirus.”
