二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Schumpeter is only an amateur stargazer(天文爱好者). His equipment is no fancier than a pair of eyes and a place in the countryside, away from London’s light pollution. That is enough to make out Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn-and, occasionally, the International Space Station crossing the sky. In the past few years a new spectacle has appeared in the form of the Starlink satellites. Launched by SpaceX, they look like nothing else in the heavens, floating like a train of white dots in tight formation.

SpaceX is a remarkable firm founded to further Mr Musk’s dream of colonizing Mars. Its rockets cost half as much as its rivals’ do, thanks in part to their ability to land their first stages for reuse rather than dumping them in the sea in line with standard industry practice.

SpaceX’s rocket business alone does not justify this rich valuation. The market for launches is small and stagnant (不景气的). This is where Starlink comes in. Those satellites are the lead of a planned constellation1(发射计划)of over1, 000, designed to beam (传输)the Internet to every corner of the globe.

Satellite broadband is not a new idea. But existing options are expensive and slow. Starlink’s cheap, mass-produced, low-flying satellites would, SpaceX claims, offer a service comparable to earthly broadband at competitive prices.

Starlink’s chief competitor is OneWeb, with 74 satellites in orbit and hundreds more planned. It, too, went bust in March, after failing to persuade SonMasayoshi, a Japanese billionaire, to invest more cash. But it has new sponsors. On July 3rd Boris Johnson, Britain’s prime minister, announced that his government had stumped up S500m for a 45% stake in OneWeb, and a golden share giving it control over its future. Bharti Global, an Indian telecoms firm, also put in S500m.

OneWeb may need more cash if it is to complete its constellation. British taxpayers may never see a financial return on their investment. But if OneWeb keeps Mr Musk on his toes even for a little while, their loss may turn out to be global consumers’ gain. Stranger things have happened in space.

【1】What is the function of Paragraph 1?

A.To show respect for amateur stargazers.

B.To draw readers’ attention to light pollution.

C.To introduce the topic of Starlink satellites.

D.To give an example of observing stars.

【2】What is the reason for the emergence of Starlink?

A.The rocket launch market is small and depressed.

B.SpaceX’s rockets can be recycled in the first stage of launch.

C.The rocket cost of SpaceX is only half that of its competitors.

D.Starlink can provide services comparable to earthly broadband at competitive prices.

【3】How did OneWeb maintain its economy?

A.It built 74 in-orbit satellites and planned hundreds of them.

B.It persuaded SonMasayoshi to invest more money.

C.Boris Johnson’s government and an Indian company invested a total of S1 billion.

D.The continuous competition between OneWeb and SpaceX brought it benefits.

【4】From the last paragraph, we can infer that

A.OneWeb’s financial losses may turn out to be global consumers’ gain

B.the battle between OneWeb and SpaceX may benefit global consumers

C.Mr Musk may step on global consumers’ toes when he achieves success

D.OneWeb no longer needs financial support from British taxpayers

  • 22、WELCOME TO THE 2021 HAL LEONARD VOCAL COMPETITION

The annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition was founded in 2011 to encourage young singers from all over United States and Canada, from children through college undergraduates. Thousands of singers have participated in the competition, with top placing videos from 35 states and provinces, and over 40 colleges and universities. The Hal Leonard Vocal Competition was one of the first music competitions held entirely on YouTube.

This year with many singers studying at home and unable to meet in person with teachers, we hope the 2021 Hal Leonard Vocal Competition can be a rewarding project for all participants to experience growth, community, and enrichment. The competition offers a thread of connection between all singers who enter, by seeing and hearing their peers (同龄人) online.

The rules of the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition have alwa ys required that a recorded accompaniment (伴奏) must be an official Hal Leonard recording. Because of the special circumstances we are in, for the 2021 competition, we will allow a singer to use an accompaniment recording made that is not an official Hal Leonard recording, provided that the accompaniment recorded matches exactly the edition of the songs from books chosen on the required repertoire (全部曲目) list. The accompaniment must be piano or keyboard only.

Unlike almost every other music competition, there is no entry fee in the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. We deliberately want young singers from any location in North America to be able to enter, without the expense of travel to an audition (试镜) site. And singers can view and hear others on YouTube from around the US and Canada who are in their own age group. Voice teachers have told us that it is instructive to hear hundreds of singers from other studios.

It is important to us to encourage the study of art song as well as musical theatre, with four age categories for each

    • Children, 12 and under

    • Early Teens, 13-15

    • High School, 16-18

    • College Undergraduates/Young Adults, 18-23

1What does the competition allow participants to do?

A.Meet their teachers personally. B.Hear people of their age online.

C.Receive videos of famous singers. D.Get some gifted books on singing.

2What are participants required to do?

A.Travel to an audition site ahead of time.

B.Prepare and record some original songs.

    C.Use non-official Hal Leonard recording.

D.Provide accompaniment to the entry song.

3What is special about the competition?

A.It is free to participate. B.It is held on YouTube.

C.It is attended by students. D.It can be watched online.

  • 23、The new social robots, including Jibo, Cozmo, Kuri and Meccano M.A.X., bear some resemblance to assistants like Apple’s Siri, but these robots come with something more. They are designed to win us over not with their smarts but with their personality. They are sold as companions that do more than talk to us. Time magazine hailed (称赞) the robots that “could fundamentally reshape how we interact with machines.” But is reshaping how we interact with machines a good thing, especially for children?

Some researchers in favor of the robots don’t see a problem with this. People have relationships with many kinds of things. Some say robots are just another thing with which we can have relationships. To support their argument, roboticists sometimes point to how children deal with toy dolls. Children animate (赋予…生命) dolls and turn them into imaginary friends. Jibo, in a sense, will be one more imaginary friend, and arguably a more intelligent and fun one.

Getting attached to dolls and sociable machines is different, though. Today’s robots tell children that they have emotions, friendships, even dreams to share. In reality, the whole goal of the robots is emotional trickery. For instance, Cozmo the robot needs to be fed, repaired and played with. Boris Sofman, the chief executive of Anki, the company behind Cozmo, says that the idea is to create “a deeper and deeper emotional connection ... And if you neglect him, you feel the pain of that.” What is the point of this, exactly? What does it mean to feel the pain of neglecting something that feels no pain at being neglected, or to feel anger at being neglected by something that doesn’t even know it is neglecting you?

This should not be our only concern. It is troubling that these robots try to empathize with children. Empathy allows us to put ourselves in the place of others, to know what they are feeling. Robots, however, have no emotions to share, and they cannot put themselves in our place. No matter what robotic creatures “say” or squeak, they don’t understand our emotional lives. They present themselves as empathy machines, but they are missing the essential equipment. They have not been born, they don’t know pain, or death, or fear. Robot thinking may be thinking, but robot feeling is never feeling, and robot love is never love.

What is also troubling is that children take robots’ behavior to indicate feelings. When the robots interact with them, children take this as evidence that the robots like them, and when robots don’t work when needed, children also take it personally. Their relationships with the robots affect their self-esteem (自尊). In one study, an 8-year-old boy concluded that the robot stopped talking to him because the robot liked his brothers better.

For so long, we dreamed of artificial intelligence offering us not only simple help but conversation and care. Now that our dream is becoming real, it is time to deal with the emotional downside of living with robots that “feel.”

【1】How are the new social robots different from Siri?

A.They are intended to teach children how to talk.

B.They are designed to attract people with their smarts.

C.Their main function is to evaluate children’s personality.

D.They have a new way to communicate with human beings.

【2】In Paragraph 3 Cozmo is used as an example to show that the social robots ______.

A.are deeply connected with human beings

B.are unable to build a real relationship with children

C.are so advanced that they can feel the pain of human beings

D.are not good enough to carry out the instructions of children

    A.emotion
