二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and over activity.

    ADHD has three sub-types:

    1. Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive

    ● Most symptoms (six or more) are in the hyperactivity-impulsivity categories and fewer than six symptoms of inattention are present, although inattention may still be present to some degree.

    2. Predominantly inattentive

    ● The majority of symptoms (six or more) are in the inattention categories and fewer than six symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity are present, although hyperactivity-impulsivity may still be present to some degree.

    3. Combined hyperactivity-impulsive and inattentive

    ● Six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more symptoms of hyperactivity - impulsivity are present.

    ● Most children have the combined type of ADHD.

    Possible causes:

    1. Genes. Results from several international studies of twins show that ADHD often runs in families. Researchers are looking at several genes that may make people more likely to develop the disorder. Knowing the genes involved may one day help researchers prevent the disorder before symptoms develop. Learning about specific genes could also lead to better treatments.

    2. Environmental factors. Studies suggest a potential link between smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy and ADHD in children. In addition, preschoolers are exposed to high levels of lead may have a higher risk of developing ADHD.

    3. Food additives. Recent British research indicates a possible link between an increase in activity and consumption of certain food additives like artificial colors or preservatives. Research is under way to confirm the findings and to learn more about how food additives may affect hyperactivity.

    Signs & symptoms:

Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. To be diagnosed with the disorder, a child must have symptoms for six or more months and to a degree that is greater than other children of the same age.

Children who have symptoms of inattentive may:

    ● Be easily distracted, miss details, forget things and frequently switch from one activity to another.

    ● Become bored with a task after only a few minutes, unless they are doing something enjoyable.

    ● Have difficulty focusing attention on completing a task or learning something new.

    ● Not seem to listen when spoken to.

Children who have symptoms of hyperactivity may:

    ● Talk nonstop.

    ● Dash around, touching or playing with anything and everything in sight.

    ● Have trouble sitting still during dinner school and story time.

    ● Have difficulty doing quiet tasks or activities.

Children who have symptoms of impulsivity may:

    ● Be very impatient.

    ● Act without regard for consequences.

    ● Have difficulty waiting for things they want.

    ● Often interrupt conversations or others’ activities.

ADHD can be mistaken for other problems

Parents and teachers can miss the fact that children with symptoms of inattention have the disorder because they are often quiet and less likely to act out. They may get along well with other children, compared with those with the other sub-types, who tend to have social problems. But children with the inattentive kind of ADHD are not the only ones whose disorders can be missed. For example adults may think that children with the hyperactive and impulsive sub-types just have emotional or disciplinary problems.

1If a kid shows six symptoms of inattention and seven symptoms of hyperactivity -impulsivity, which of the subtypes of ADHD does he belong to?

    A.Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive.

    B.Predominantly inattentive.

    C.Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive

    D.It all depends.

2Which of the following causes of ADHD has been confirmed by scientific research?

    A.Genes. B.Smoking during pregnancy.

C.Food additives D.Exposure to high levels of lead.

3Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Kids who have symptoms of ADHD for more than four months can be diagnosed with ADHD.

B.The hyperactive and impulsive sub-types tend to be mistaken for emotional or disciplinary problems.

C.One of the symptoms of inattention is that kids become tired of a task easily even if they are doing something enjoyable.

D.It is claimed that artificial colors and preservatives have nothing to do with ADHD.

  • 22、I have two sons. They are as different as night and day. My youngest is sweet, loveable, easy-going, and finds joy in everything. My oldest we’ve nicknamed the Evil Genius is ambitious, self-confident, and suffers no fools.

Whenever we mentioned Santa my husband and I were rewarded with major eye rolling and deep sighs from my oldest. At first we both tried to ignore it.

We both knew that our eldest had figured out the big secret. But I’d be damned(指责) if he was going to ruin it for his six-year-old brother who had plenty of Santa-loving years ahead of him. I looked at my husband in the eye and said, “I’ll handle this.” to which he responded “Okay just be careful because I’m not sure he knows - he might just be acting like it.” But I knew. And I had it in my mind that he was about to break his younger brothers spirit and break the news to him. I was afraid he was going to take the Christmas spirit away from my sweet innocent youngest and stamp all over it. I had to protect him. I needed to control this now before it got out of control. I rushed into the play room where my oldest was playing alone. I looked him dead in the eyes and said: “Well you know Santa isn’t real, right?”  And as I stared at my eight-year-old son for what seemed like a long time of silence, his eyes started to fill with tears.  And a tear dropped down his cheek when he screamed out, “He’s not?”

“Um well it’s not that he’s not real (shut up you idiot(白痴) - stop saying he’s not real), but he doesn’t really make and deliver all the toys. Dad and I get some of them for you. So he’s real. He’s just got a little help from us.”

The Evil Genius wasnt buying it. He just sat there looking at me with an expression of doubt.

You know when you make a terrible mistake but you can’t stop yourself from making it worse? That was me because I just had to know. I had to know why he had seemed to be over Santa. So I asked him why he rolled his eyes and sighed every time his father and I mentioned Santa. To which he replied that kids at school had been saying Santa wasn't real but that he still thought he was.

  • 23、My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like the way it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.

We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our “rock garden”. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area. We would do all of the yard work on our own, even the tiring weed-pulling.

Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify, I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise claimed that she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆) and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

That’s when I realized that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment(营养) and growth as well.

Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

3Which of the following best describes the sunflower?

    A. Brave and stubborn.   B. Confident and persistent.

    A. Human beings are able to remove obstacles.

    C. A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the sunflower.

    D. We can achieve success as long as we are self-confident.

  • 24、“I’m sorry,” the bank teller said. “Your check has bounced (拒付).” Her words took a moment to sink in. This year had brought so much pain. A divorce (离婚), losing my house, then the loss of my job right before the holidays… and now the check for my car insurance had bounced!

Leaving the bank, I wondered what I would do. My unemployment (失业) checks were delayed, and everything seemed to be piling up. How long could I last without money? How I missed my parents in the faraway Los Angeles.

December in Michigan meant it was not only dark, but cold and snowy. Despite (尽管) that, I had an urge to take a walk on my favorite trail. Being cold and dark also meant there was a good chance no one else would be out, so I decided to go.

On the trail, I was grateful for sounds of rushing water coming from the little river. They covered my soft sobs while I walked. Tonight, it all felt like too much to bear.

Eventually, when my tears dried up, I headed home. Approaching my apartment (公寓) door, I noticed something bulky hanging on it. Probably another bill, I thought. While I struggled with my boots, I could see a card with my name on it through the clear plastic bag. Reaching in, I took out a very small, white envelope. Inside the envelope was a beautiful card with no name written on it, but it was stuffed with gift cards --- hundreds of dollars of gift cards that could meet my urgent needs!

I was in shock and awe. The timing of this amazing anonymous (匿名的) gift, arriving at exactly the right moment, was almost too much to comprehend. Again, I began crying, but now they were tears of joy. I felt so loved.

I would go to Los Angeles tomorrow!

A.Something was wrong with her divorce.

B.She didn’t succeed if finding a new job.

    B.The bank teller.

    C.Her friend.

    D.Her former husband.

【4】What is the process of the author’s emotion and feeling?

    C.Disappointed, sad, surprised, warm.

    D.Angry, crazy, calm, grateful.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Taylor Hash wanted to be a career pilot. She had just started building up hours of flight time when disaster struck. As she guided the Diamond Star plane off the runway at Oakland County International airport, on her third-ever independent flight, the front tyre (轮胎) of her plane fell off.

Taylor was unaware at that point that she had just lost crucial landing equipment. “I didn’t feel anything on the takeoff roll (起飞滑跑).” she said.

Experienced pilot Chris Yates, though, saw something on the takeoff roll and immediately took action. He knew that Taylor would have to make a difficult emergency landing. He radioed the control tower and said, “The Diamond Star that just took off lost its nose (头部) wheel tyre on the runway.”

But the control tower operators didn’t know what to do. They’d never seen such a thing happen before. Yates asked them to put him through to Taylor so he could help her.

When Taylor learned what had happened, she was in panic. With only 57 total fight hours under her belt, she didn’t know what her options were and could only imagine how this was going to end.

“I didn’t know what to do in that moment,” said Taylor later. “I’m just panicking and figuring out how I’m going to land this plane safely.”

But Yates knew what to do. He knew that the most important thing would be to keep Taylor calm so that she could follow his instructions effectively.

Yates started by reassuring (使安心) Taylor that everything was going to turn out just fine: “Taylor, this is Chris Yates. My daughter’s name is Taylor, and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine. Just take your time.” He told her that she could circle the field until she was ready to land. “When you touch down, I just want that stick (操纵杆) all the way back. You’re gonna hold that stick back like you don’t want that nose to touch,” he coached her.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
