二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Supermarkets have long been suffering as one of the thinnest-margined businesses in existence and one of the least-looked-forward-to places to work or visit. For more than a decade, they have been under attack from e-commerce giants, blamed for making Americans fat, and accused of contributing to climate change.

Supermarkets can technically be defined as giants housing 15,000 to 60,000 different products. The revolutionary idea of a self-service grocery, where people could hunt and gather food from aisles rather than asking a clerk to fetch items from behind a counter, first came about in America. There is some debate about which was the very first, but over the years a consensus has built around King Kullen Supermarket, founded in New York in 1930.

For some 300 years, Americans had fed themselves from small stores and public markets. Shopping for food involved mud, noisy chickens, clouds of flies, nasty smells, bargaining, and getting short-changed. The supermarket imitated the Fordist factory, with its emphasis on efficiency and standardization, and reimagined it as a place to buy food. Supermarkets may not feel cutting-edge now, but they were a revolution in distribution at the time. They were such strange marvels that, on her first official state visit to the United States in 1957, Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ insisted on an impromptu (即兴的) tour of a suburban-Maryland Giant Food.

The typical supermarket layout has barely changed over the past 90 years. Most stores open with flowers, fruit and vegetables at the front as a breath of freshness to arouse our appetite. Meanwhile, they keep the milk, eggs, and other daily basics all the way back so you’ll travel through as much of the store as possible, and be tempted along the way.

In the early days, as the supermarket multiplied, so did our suspicion of it. We have long feared that this “revolution in distribution” uses corporate black magic on our appetite. The book The Hidden Persuaders, published in 1957, warned that supermarkets were putting women in a “hypnoidal trance (催眠恍惚状态),” causing them to wander aisles, bumping into boxes and “picking things off shelves at random.”

【1】What problem have supermarkets been facing?

A.They are actually on the way to shutdown.

B.They have been losing customers and profits.

C.They are forced to use e-commerce strategies.

D.They have difficulty adapting to climate change.

【2】What does the passage say about the idea of a self-service grocery?

A.It was put forward by King Kullen.

B.It originated in the United States.

C.It has been under constant debate.

    D.It proves revolutionary even today.

【3】What have people long feared about supermarkets?

A.They use tricky strategies to promote their business.

B.They are going to replace the local groceries entirely.

C.They apply corporate black magic to the goods on display.

D.They take advantage of the weaknesses of women shoppers.

  • 22、How words came into being is unknown. All we assume (推测) is that some early men invented certain soundsin one way or anotherto express thoughts and feelingsactions and thingsso that they could talk with each other. Later they agreed upon certain signscalled letterswhich could be put together to show those soundsand which could be written down. Those soundswhether spoken or written in letters, are called words.

The power of wordsthenlies in their associations—the things they bring up to our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experienceand the longer we livethe more certain words bring back to us the happy and sad events of our pastand the more we read and learnthe more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is what we call literary style (文体)Above allthe real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like musicand which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctlyor they will make our speech silly and common.

  • 23、There once lived a woman who had been blind for decades. Then one day she found a doctor who treated the woman with a new device she had invented called the Laserphaco Probe. For the first time in over 30 years, the woman could regain her eyesight. The doctor responsible for this life-changing surgery was called Dr. Patricia E. Bath.

Dr. Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科医生), researcher, and an advocate for the prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. She had an interest in science and medicine from a young age, which she said was first evoked by a chemistry kit her mother had bought for her when she was young.

During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr. Bath realized that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observation led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people to get early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated saving the eyesight of many.

Dr. Bath invented the new technique to remove cataracts(白内障)by the Laserphaco Probe. This technique is still used around the world, and it has allowed doctors to restore patients’ eyesight in a more precise, and less painful, manner than techniques before it.

Cataracts develop as people age. They form when the proteins in the lens(晶状体)of the eye break down, making the lens cloudy. This can significantly affect vision. Traditional cataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. Dr. Bath succeeded in solving the problem.

Dr. Bath made innovative contributions to the field of medicine which had long-lasting impacts on the communities she served.

【1】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “evoked” in paragraph 2?

    A.Displayed.

    B.Stimulated.

    C.Discovered.

    D.Maintained.

【2】Why did Dr. Bath create a community ophthalmology system?

A.To offer eye care treatment to the poor.

B.To help the blind regain their eyesight.

C.To provide eye surgery for African Americans.

D.To give real medical care to blind people.

【3】What can we say about Dr. Bath’s device?

A.It prevents proteins in the lens breaking down.

B.It needs to be advertised around the world.

C.It helps patients avoid getting cataracts.

D.It makes cataract surgery better than before.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.Meet a woman who improved vision for millions

B.Admire an inventor who changed the face of science

C.Recommend a doctor who had various medical skills

D.Remember a researcher who was an advocate for the poor

  • 24、   Today is Friday the 13th of the year. Even though the date is known throughout Western culture as one associated with negative things, it’s really just another Friday on the calendar. There is no scientific evidence to suggest this day has an increased chance of bad occurrences compared with other days. But that doesn’t mean scientists haven’t tried to find any.

In Thomas W. Lawsons 1907 novel, Friday, the thirteenth, a businessman takes advantage of the superstition (迷信) and creates a Wall Street panic on the day. The book was the likely inspiration for a number of scientific examinations of stock market returns on Fridays that fell on the 13th day of the month compared with all other Fridays. In 2001, Brian Lucey, a business professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, published his analysis of a few of those studies and found several flaws. The studies had narrow assessments overall, focusing on just a few markets or a single stock exchange. But when he analyzed the data as a whole, Lucey found that internationally, with few exceptions, returns on Friday the 13th were typically just a little higher than returns on other Fridays.

The scientific evidence for cause and effect may not be there, but people may still alter their behavior on Friday the 13th in a way that causes certain things to happen. The way people drive might be different from their usual. But the few studies that have examined traffic accidents haven’t found statistically significant trends to suggest Friday the 13th is more dangerous than other Fridays on the road.

The science is clear: Friday the 13th is a normal day. Yet, people continue to think this is meant to be a bad day. “Psychologically, superstitions arise from the desire to influence external events, decrease anxiety and reduce uncertainty,” said Neil Dagnall, a psychologist at Manchester Metropolitan University. “Besides, I don’t think people know often why they do things.”

1Why is Friday the 13th usually associated with negativity?

A.The date increases possibility of risks. B.Scientists have found enough evidence.

C.Culture has taught people to believe so. D.Things always go bad or worse on the day.

2What did Brian Lucey’s studies focus on?

A.Novels relating to Friday the 13th. B.Written records of Wall Street panic.

C.Analysis of successful business cases. D.Stock market returns on Friday the 13th

3In Paragraph 3, the few studies are mentioned to show that____.

A.human fear of Friday the 13h is not necessary

B.traffic accidents can be avoided on other Fridays

C.people tend to behave strangely on Friday the 13th

D.staying at home is recommended on Friday the 13h

4What does Neil Dagnall think of superstitions?

A.They can lead to endless human desires.

B.They can help people to reduce anxiety.

C.They cause great harm to physical health.

D.They produce a sense of controlling everything
