21、Visitors worry that London is an expensive city but there really are so many free things to do here. The following ideas should get you started.
All of London's major museums are free, but most offer some special exhibitions for a fee. My favorite is the Museum of London where you can learn the history of London from Roman times to today. And I love the Geffrye Museum which shows English domestic interiors and helps bring to life what it was really like to live in London.
I regularly hear people tell me the Queen Mary's Rose Gardens in Regent's Park is their favorite spot in London, and who am I to argue? I would also recommend St. James's Park as it offers one of the best views of Buckingham Palace. Hyde Park is enormous and Kensington Gardens nearby includes the ever popular Diana Memorial Playground and the Peter Pan Statue.
No visit to London is complete without seeing this military tradition. The Queen's Guard in London changes in the Forecourt inside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Get there early and view the spectacle from outside the front gates.
Trafalgar Square is one of Britain's greatest visitor attractions and was designed by John Nash in the 1820s and constructed in the 1830s. This iconic square has many sights to see including Nelson's Column and the National Gallery. It is both a tourist attraction and the main focus for political demonstrations. Every December, Norway donates a marvelous Christmas tree, to thank Britain for liberation from the Nazis.

22、It was 3:34 in the morning. Suddenly the bed moved a little. I woke up. That bed used to move a lot so I just thought it was my wife rolling over. I looked over to her and she was fast asleep.
So I thought it was just another small tremor(轻微地震). We used to get many small tremors in Chile. But then everything in the room started making noise. The tremor got a bit stronger. My wife woke up.
I went to open the front door to make sure it wouldn’t get stuck while my wife went to see how the kids were. They were still fast asleep.
I got to the front door and left it open. When I turned around to go back to the bedroom, the full force of the earthquake started to hit. I couldn’t move forward. While I was trying to hold myself up against the wall I looked out the window. It was frightening, some buildings coming in and out of view and some already falling down. Then the earthquake made a strong push and our lights went out. In the darkness, I thought, “This is it! We’re not coming out of this alive.”
Luckily, the violent shaking gradually slowed down and then stopped. I could finally walk to our children’s room. My wife had been standing over them during the strongest part of the earthquake, making sure nothing fell on them.
After such a big earthquake, we expected the “smaller” aftershocks to be still very strong. There was still a chance that the building could collapse. So we woke the kids up, got some basic things and started to walk down the emergency stairs all 22 floors of them.
When we finally arrived at the ground floor many other people had already arrived, some in pajamas(睡衣), some half-dressed. The good news was everyone got out of the building safe and sound.

23、Last year DeepMind’s AlphaGo programme took on and beat two of the world’s best players of the Chinese game of Go(围棋)-an unbelievable achievement seen as a milestone in the development of artificial intelligence (A). That programme was trained by first giving it vast amounts of data from amateur and professional games.
The new AlphaGo Zero began with a blank board and nothing but the rules of Go and set about playing against itself. Within three days it was so advanced that it took on the previous version, which had taken months to develop, and defeated it by a hundred games to zero.
DeepMind says that creating knowledge from first principles without learning from human expertise(专门技能)is an important step in developing artificial intelligence. The company’s founder Demis Hassabis said this breakthrough could help in real world problems such as designing new drugs or discovering new materials.
In 1997, Garry Kasparov was defeated by Deep Blue, a computer program written by IBM, running on a supercomputer. This was the first time that a ruling world chess champion was defeated by a computer program in tournament conditions. Superficially, AlphaGo’s win against Lee Sedol can be compared to Deep Blue’s win against Gary Kasparov, which happened almost 20 years ago. So: what’s the big deal? We have to understand the differences between chess and Go.
In chess, each player begins with 16 pieces of six different types. Each piece of type moves differently. The goal of the game is to seize the other player's king. Go starts with an empty board. The goal of the game is to gain as much territory(领地)as possible.
Although the rules of Go might appear simpler than those of chess, the complexity of Go is higher. Also, games usually last longer for lots of moves. A typical game in Go might last for 150 moves vs.80 in chess.
【1】What helped the new AlphaGo Zero defeat the previous version?
A. A supercomputer.
B. Some human expertise.
C. A blank board and the rules of Go.
D. Abundant data from various games.
【2】Which of the following is TRUE about the AlphaGo programme?
A. It records the steps in the development of AI.
B. It might help solve some real world problems.
C. It may help develop a new computer system.
D. It will rule the world Go champions.
【3】What can we learn about the Game of Go from the text?
A. Each player starts with 16 pieces of six types.
B. It lasts longer for more rules.
C. It is more complex than the game of chess.
D. It takes far fewer moves than the game of chess.
【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the outcome of AI development?
A. Doubtful. B. Disappointed.
C. Uncaring. D. Positive.
24、Introduction
Blenheim Palace is one of the Europe’s largest and greatest palaces. It was built between 1705 and 1722 as a reward of the British government to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, for defeating King Louis XIV’s army at Blenheim, a small Bavarian village on the Danube River.
The palace was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, which displayed strength and arm glory. It is the largest non-royal building in England and is now listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Winston Churchill, who was to become the UK's Prime Minister (some would say Britain’s greatest 20th-century politician ) and Nobel prize winner for literature. It is also in Blenheim that Winston got married to Clementine Hozier in 1908.
A lasting exhibition is devoted to the man’s life, work and writings. Winston and his wife are buried in Bladon Church within the palace.
